    TheBoat Race

  • 2

    Paxton and Delia are friends.

They like to play ball and jump

over waves. They like to ride in

    a sailboat.

The wind blows on the sails

of a sailboat. The wind makes

    the sailboat move.

    One day, Paxton and Delia

saw a sign on the beach. The

    sign said “Sailboat Race Today.”

    “Our sailboat should go in

    the sailboat race!” said Delia.

    “Yes. Our sailboat should go

    in the race,” said Paxton.

Delia pulled the large sail up.

Paxton felt the wind blow on his

    face. He helped Delia. Delia

moved the boat into the wind.

The wind blew across the sails,

    and the sailboat moved!

    The wind pushed the sailboat

    through the waves. The sailboat

    moved faster. Soon, Paxton and

    Delia’s sailboat was the second

sailboat in the race. There was

one sailboat in front of them.

“We can win this race!” Delia

    cried. She was very happy.

    Then the wind stopped

    blowing and the boat stopped

    moving.

“We should blow air on the

    sails,” said Paxton. Paxton and

Delia did blow air on the sails.

    The sailboat did not move.

“We should flap our towels at

    the sails,” said Delia.

    Paxton and Delia flapped

their towels up and down at the

sails. The sailboat did not move.

    “Some sailboats are leaving

    the race,” said Delia.

    “Those sailboats can leave,”

said Paxton. “We will not leave

the race. We will not quit.”

    Then Paxton and Delia heard

loud birds. The birds flew over

their heads. Delia saw the birds.

She said, “I know what to do!”

    “Will you help us?” Delia

asked the birds. The birds said

yes! “Please flap your wings to

    make wind,” said Delia.

    The birds flapped their wings

up and down. Wind blew across

    the sails. The sailboat moved!

    Paxton and Delia’s sailboat

moved to the beach. It was the

only sailboat to finish the race!

    “We won the race!” Paxton

    cried. He hugged Delia.

    “Yes!” said Delia. “We helped

    each other win!”
