Imagine that you are writing a paper on culture in Thailand.Would you rather use a pencil with or without an eraser?

A pencil without an eraser is the same thing as a keyboardwithout a delete key. The BackspaceBackspace and DeletDelet ee keys let you erasetext that you have keyed in. What are some reasons that youmight want to erase text?

Find It!1 On the Kids InfoBits homepage, click on the icon labeled

GeographGeograph yy. Next, click the CC ountriesountries icon. Scroll down thelist of countries until you see TT hailandhailand. Click on it.

2 Open the MM agazinesagazines tab and find the article titled “TheElephant Round-up.”Open this article and read it.

Use It!1 Open the file called Elephants. Go to the FF ileile menu.

Choose SS aa vv ee. Save the file as Elephants_Your Name. Askyour teacher to help you decide where to save this file.

2 The paragraph in the data file is from the article. Let’spractice deleting text in this paragraph. First, put yourcursor after the word all in the first line.

3 Find the BackspaceBackspace key on your keyboard. Push it fourtimes. You just deleted the word “all”and the extra spacethat went with it!

PPPPrrrroooo jjjj eeeecccc tttt 3333 ----Thailand and Deleting Text

Backspace or Delete? Some buttons differ dependingon what kind of computer youare using. If you are using a PCcomputer, the rectangularbutton two buttons above theReturnReturn key is yourBackspaceBackspace key. It erases textbehind the cursor. The DeletDelet eekey to the right erases text infront of the cursor. If you areusing a Mac computer, the but-ton two spaces above theReturnReturn key says DeletDelet ee, but itacts like the BackspaceBackspace key, erasing text behind the cursor. The DeletDelet ee key to the right of iterases text in front of the cursor.

5 Push the BackspaceBackspace key. The highlighted text disappeared!

6 Let’s do that one more time. Highlight the word big in thelast sentence. Now, key in the word huge. You just replacedthe word big with huge!
