You will identify the condition and the thickness of the hair you are working on to be able to choose a product that will support your blow-dry. You will know what hair problems may occur and how to deal with them.

What you must learnThis section provides you with guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to achieve this unit.

Learning outcome 1

Know how to blow-dry hair

Produce a collage/style book of finished looks, including products and tools used

Presentation: Collage, poster, leaflet (computerised or paper-based).

What to include: Images of looks, styling products, tools used, information on how to use products and tools, labels to show ingredients and manufacturers’ instructions of products  and tools, features and benefits of each product.

Describe the safety considerations for blow-drying hair

Something that may happen before, during or after the process:

Brushes/combs tangled in hair – gently untangle in sections.

Hair starts to become static – use lower heat setting, use heat protection.

Dryer too hot – turn heat down, move direction of flow away from scalp.

Lack of product – choose another product, get advice, seek assistance.

Be able to blow-dry hair

Prepare yourself, the model and your work area to blow-dry hair

Prepare yourself: Clean clothes, clean shoes, minimal jewellery and piercings, clean hair, clean teeth and fresh breath, clean nails.

Prepare your model: Remove your model’s outer clothing to protect against damage, use a clean gown and towel, ensure your model is relaxed and comfortable, be aware of jewellery and remove if necessary (to avoid damage to jewellery and skin).

Prepare work area: Clean and hygienic, good lighting and ventilation, covering for table or trolley, jar with sterilising fluid, tools and equipment in a safe working position.

Prepare products, tools and equipment:

Products – shampoo and conditioner, styling products (blow-dry lotion, moisturiser/oils, heat protection spray).

Tools – brushes, combs, sectioning clips.

Equipment – hairdryer, gown and towel, trolley/workstation.

Identify problems that may affect the service

Deal with yourself:

Poor hair condition – use leave-in conditioner, heat protector, turn temperature of styling equipment down, recommend deep conditioning treatments.

Hair length (very long) – gently detangle, do not pull hair harshly.

Ask for help:

Lack of product – see manager or technician for more product.

Scalp condition (non-contagious) – cuts and abrasions.

Scalp condition (contagious) – head lice/nits.

If in doubt always seek help.

What you must learnCarry out a consultation and plan for the service

Questioning methods: Identify the condition of the hair to choose the most suitable styling product and tools to use. Use questioning techniques throughout.

Open questions – your model cannot say yes or no, they will have to provide a full answer to a question.

Closed questions – your model can only answer yes or no to your questions.

Hair condition – chemically treated, normal, dry, oily.

Hair length – above/below shoulder.

Thin/fine hair – will need less product on the hair.

Medium hair – use manufacturer’s instructions for use.

Thick hair – may need more products on the hair, and smaller sections to work in.

Consultation form/sheet: Identify your model’s hair condition, type and length.

Select products, tools and equipment for a blow-dry service

Follow manufacturer’s instructions when using products, tools and equipment.

Products: To help style control and/or tame flyaway frizzy hair and to hold a finished style in place;

Blow-dry lotions – protects hair from heat/humidity, hold, applied to wet hair.

Moisturiser/oils – excessively curly hair, conditioning, adds moisture, adds shine, use on dry hair.

Heat protectors – coats hair, protective layer, gives shine/definition, apply prior to the use of all electrical equipment.

Tools: To control and style the hair throughout the blow-drying process;

Flat brushes – gives smooth, straight finish.

Comb – to section and smooth loose/flyaway hair.

Sectioning clips – to clip hair out of the way.

Equipment:

Personal protective equipment for yourself or your client – gown, plastic cape, towel.

Hand dryer – to remove moisture from the hair and dry into place.

Workstation/trolley – to hold tools and products for ease of use.

What you must learnUse hygienic and safe methods of working

Follow safe methods of working: Carry out the service without causing danger or damage to yourself, the model or your work area intentionally or by accident, follow health and safety policies for working safely.

Preparation: Ensure everything is ready before you start, place products, tools and equipment close at hand on a trolley or work surface.

Follow COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health): Store, handle, use, dispose of products correctly.

How to work hygienically: Only use clean towels and ensure tools and equipment are sterilised. Clean work area when complete.

Carry out a blow-dry on a model

To blow-dry the hair: Carry out a blow-dry on one length or layered, below shoulder hair, ensuring mid-lengths and ends are straight and smooth, take before, during and after photos of your work.

1. Detangle hair.

2. Apply styling product suitable for hair.

3. Use a tail comb to section hair into hot cross bun, taking into account parting.

4. Select brush suitable for hair type and length.

5. Work in sections.

6. Use dryer in a downward motion from root to tip.

7. Hold brush and sections firmly with tension.

8. Ensure the hair is dry and smooth from root to tip.

General aftercare advice: How to look after the style, avoid damp atmosphere, brush regularly to remove knots.
