    LEVEL I INFRACTIONS

    Level I infractions shall be addressed by the classroom teacher with the student. Each team has a plan of action fordealing with these violations.

    INFRACTIONSLEVEL I RATIONALE RULES

    Minor class disruptions

    Talking without permission

    Writing and passing notes

    Getting out of seat and walking aroundthe room without permission

    Attempting to get others attention withinappropriate actions

    Throwing paper

    Possession or unauthorized distributionof candy, gum or any other item isprohibited.

    because the goal of theinstructional staff is tomaximize time on task

    Students will adhere to rules and requirements set forth bythe team and class teacher.

    Students will not participate in any action(s) that interfereswith the instructional process.

    Tardies (1st,2nd,3rd time in a quarter)

    because it is distractingand disruptive to thelearning environment

    Students shall arrive to class on time. Arriving in class fiveminutes or beyond the tardy time is a Level II infraction.

    Profanity/Inappropriate Language(mild and among students)

    Students shall refrain from the use of profanity and/or vulgarlanguage (written or spoken) and inappropriate gestures.

    Cheating/Plagiarism (first offense)See Page 7 in the P.W.C.Code of Behavior

    Students shall refrain from giving or receiving answers fromsomeone else on class and home assignments, quizzes andtests. Student who gave the answers and student whoaccepted the answers will receive a 0 for that assignmentand parents will be contacted.

    Unprepared for Classbecause it is a form ofinsubordination

    Students shall come to class with the necessary supplies asset forth by the teacher/team.

    Public Display of Affection (PDA)

    because it is distractingand not appropriate in theschool setting

    Students shall refrain from inappropriate display of affection-hugging, kissing, hand-holding and any other body contact.

    Written Passes/Student Agendasbecause it is importantto have accountability foreach student

    Students may not share a pass or use another personsstudent agenda as a written pass.

    Indecent Materials

    because it interfereswith the instructionalactivities and disruptive tothe orderly operation ofschool

    Students shall not have in their possession any drawings,photos, objects or written materials to include music lyricsthat are vulgar and obscene.

    Out of Bounds

    it interferes with the

    schools ability to providea safe and secureenvironment

    Students shall refrain from going into areas that are not part

    of their daily schedule. Students must have their signedagenda in order to be in the halls.

    Forgery

    Students shall refrain from signing their parents/guardiansname or any other persons name to any type of schooldocument.

    Litteringbecause it is notconducive to an orderlylearning environment

    Students shall refrain from throwing trash on the schoolgrounds. You are to assist the staff in maintaining a cleanenvironment.

    LEVEL II INFRACTIONS

    The following infractions will result in a guidance referral with prior intervention by the classroom teacher. Afterguidance referral contact, guidance may share information with administration. Administration will decide ifconsequences are needed.

    Failure to Attend Detentionbecause it is an example of insubordination or defiance

    Accumulated Non-Participation in PEbecause it is an example of insubordination or defiance

    Chronic Tardiness to Classbecause it is distracting and disruptive to the learningenvironment

    Extensive Public Display of Affectionbecause it is distracting and not appropriate in the school setting

    Instigating a fightbecause it interferes with the orderly operation of schoolbecause it is a form of bullying or harassment

    Provoking others to fight is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

    Class Cutting (1st & 2nd Offense)See page 10 in the P.W. C. Code of Behavior

    Lying/Dishonesty/Deliberate Misrepresentationto Staff (1st & 2nd Offense)

    Students are required to demonstrate character in their words andactions

    Racial Slursbecause every student has a right to attend school, free fromname calling and inappropriate comments.

    Students shall refrain from the use of racial slurs. The use of racial

    slurs will not be tolerated in any form.

    Note: Parent contact is defined as a two-way communication between teacher and parent.

    LEVEL III INFRACTIONS

    The following infractions will result in a discipline referral with prior intervention by the classroom teacher.

    INFRACTION RATIONALE CONSEQUENCES

    Electronic Entertainment Devices are notpermitted in the classroom. This includes:Cell Phones in use/visibleCD players in use/visibleHand-held games

    Audio or video recording devicesShock devicesLaser pointer or other laser devices

    because it is disruptive tothe learning environment

    Code of Behavior

    These items are forbidden and will result in:1st time confiscation of property with the item given tosecurity officer for parent pick up.2nd time-- referral with the item given to security officer,

    parent pick up and Saturday School3rd time-- referral with the item given to security officer,Parent Conference and 1 day-ISS

    Vandalism See page 11 in the P.W. C.Code of Behavior

    Willful or malicious damage to or destruction of propertywithin the school building or school grounds is prohibited.Parent Contact and appropriate consequences to includeSaturday School, ISS, or OSS. Students will be required topay for damages.

    All students shall speak to any adult in the building in arespectful manner; refraining from cursing. Parent Contact

    and appropriate consequences to include Saturday School,ISS, or OSS.

    Inappropriate/ Unauthorized/Misuseof Technology

    See page 10 in the P.W. C.Code of Behavior

    PWCS computers, computer networks, and other electronicdevices shall be used only for valid educational purposesand only with the approval of a school staff member. ParentContact and appropriate consequences to include SaturdaySchool, ISS, or OSS.

    Students are required todemonstrate character intheir words and actions

    Insubordination

    because Parkside MiddleStaff members areresponsible for the safety

    and welfare of students.

    Students shall immediately comply with any reasonablerequests made by staff. Parent Contact and appropriateconsequences to include Saturday School, ISS, or OSS.

    Consequences for Level III Infractions will result in administrative action to include the following:

    Verbal warning

    Restitution/pay for damages

    ISS

    Parent contact / parent conference

    Night School

    Saturday School

    OSS

    Principals Hearing

    Students assigned to ISS or OSS will not be allowed to attend nor participate in after school activities on theday (s) assigned.

    Students who do not cooperate in ISS will be given OSS or additional ISS with support.

    ISS Officer will:

    Notify teacher(s) of scheduled date

    Provide each teacher with an envelope or folder for classwork/homework

    Provide a daily list of students to administration/staff of students who did not have classwork

    Teacher will:

    Provide written instruction to complete classwork/homework assignments Place envelope/folder in the ISS mailbox the day before student reports to ISS.

    Students may be placed on a Behavior Contract at anytime if deemed necessary by the administration.

    Students who are assigned Saturday School and do not attend, will be given ISS or OSS.

    Five days of OSS within a nine week period may result in failure for the marking period.

    Students may be denied participation at school functions and on school field trips based on theirbehavior.

    If school is not in session on the day prior to Saturday School, students assigned to

    that Saturday School session will be reassigned another date by their administrator.

    If school is not in session on the day(s) of an assigned In-School Suspension, students

    assigned ISS for that date(s) will be reassigned another date by their administrator.

    If school is not in session on the day(s) of an assigned Out-of-School Suspension,

    students assigned OSS for that date(s) will automatically be reassigned OSS for the

    next day(s) that school is in session.

    LEVEL IV INFRACTIONS

    The following infractions are the more serious and require immediate administrative action .

    Fighting/ PhysicalAssault on Peer

    Students shall not participate in any mutual

    shoving, wrestling, or aggressive action thatcould lead to injury. This applies during theschool day, on the bus and at any schoolrelated activities.

    1st

    Offense - 3 to 5 days2nd and all other offenses a minimum of 5 daysand other consequences to be determined by theadministration.

    GamblingStudents shall not participate in betting orgambling of any form

    OSS- (3 to 5 days) The number of days willdepend on the magnitude of the incident

    Violation of FireRegulations

    Student shall not engage in any of thefollowing:Setting firesPulling the fire alarmPossession of a stink bombFire-starting devices

    Firecrackers and other small explosives

    OSS (3 to 5 days)The number of days depend on the magnitude ofthe incident

    Smoking

    The use of any tobacco product and thepossession of tobacco paraphernalia isprohibited

    1st Offense 3 days of OSS with the option toattend IMPACT2nd Offense OSS -5 days

    Theft

    Students shall refrain from taking items thatwhich belong to others

    Students shall not have in their possessionstolen items.

    OSS - 5 days (the number of days depends on themagnitude) in addition to reimbursing the owner ifthe goods are damaged or lost.

    Horseplay

    Students shall refrain from birthday licks,initiation, neck-boning, throwing objects orany other playful acts that includes any formof physical contact

    Administrative action to include verbal warning,ISS, Saturday School or OSS

    Harassment/Bullying

    Students shall refrain from intimidating othersin any form-sexually, verbally or physically(ex: book checking).

    OSS 2 to 5 days

    ExtremeVandalism

    Major destruction of school property isunacceptable.

    5 days OSS and parent/guardian may be requiredto reimburse the school for cost of the damages.

    Use of gang signsand symbols

    We are committed in educating our studentsin zero tolerance schools.

    OSS 2 to 5 days plus a guidance referral uponreturn

    Consequences for Level IV will be determined by the administrator. Students who have been on OSS will meetwith guidance to develop a re-admittance plan that will focus on a change in behavior.

    Students may be referred to Prince William County Police for Level IV Infractions.

    LEVEL V INFRACTIONS

    The following infractions are the most serious and require immediate administrative actions.

    Possession of WeaponsStudents shall not possess, handle or transport any pistol, revolver,knife, firearm or any other device that has the potential to causeharm.

    Threat to the Safety of the School Environment Students shall not be involved in or be responsible for creating asituation that will endanger the safety of self or place others in

    jeopardy or risk.

    Verbal and Physical Assaulton Staff Member

    Students will not assault or batter a staff member, for example,unlawful threatening or beating; any physical force or violence, toinclude tearing clothes, threatening to seize or strike a staff member.

    Substance Abuse Students will not use, purchase, sell, distribute, be under the

    influence of or possess any alcoholic beverages or any controlledsubstance.

    Mob Assault Two or more students who attack another student on the way toschool, during the school day and on the way home will besuspended for 5 days and receive a Principals Hearing.

    Distribution or sharing nonprescription drugs Students shall not possess, handle or share nonprescription drugs

    Consequences for Level V Infractions will include 5 to 10 days OSS and a Principals Hearing.

    Consequences for Level V Infractions may be referred to Prince William County Police and/orOSMAP.

    Any incident that occurs in the community that is relevant to or impacts the school may cause consequences

    or expulsion for the student from school.

    BUS INFRACTIONS

    Discipline procedures for bus infractions include the following consequences:

    First Offense Warning

    Second Offense Bus suspension for one week

    Third Offense Bus suspension for two weeks

    Fourth & SubsequentOffenses Extended bus suspension or loss of bus privileges

    If one receives a referral from the Activity Bus, consequences may be extended or permanent loss of theprivilege to ride the Activity Bus.
