September 2012

Welcome back to LME for a new school year. Your

PTA memberships and support mean so much to our

school. Our PTA works together with our school

administration to bring our LME family wonderful

programs, family fun nights, and school grounds &

technological enhancements. We are off to a great

start, and have many more fun events and programs

planned.

So far this year we have had great attendance at PTA

events like our General Meeting, Boo Hoo Breakfast,

Grandparents’ Day Breakfast, Volunteer Breakfast,

and Barnes & Noble Night. We hope to continue to

see great participation at our other upcoming family

fun nights, like United Skates Night and Red Elephant

Night. A percentage of the proceeds from your

purchases or attendance at these events will be given

back to us to benefit our classrooms and school

enhancement projects.

Our Entertainment Book Fundraiser is coming to a

close, and we want to thank so many of you for selling

or buying books to help us reach our fundraising goals.

Although we fell short of our goal this year, we hope

to make up for this shortage with our Read-A-Thon

Fundraiser, which starts on Tuesday, October 2nd.

This fundraiser not only encourages our students to

read, but 100% of the money that’s raised stays at our

school, 50% of which goes directly back to your

child’s classroom. Please help and encourage your

children to read and record during these two weeks,

and if possible, help them get sponsors to raise money

to help their classrooms and school.

Thank you for supporting LME PTA. We are

looking forward to another fun year!

under our pavilion on Sept 7th. We served fresh fruit,

yogurt, pastries, donuts and many other yummy

breakfast items. It was a lovely morning and it was

really nice to see so many kids eating a nice breakfast

Thank you to everyone that came out and a huge

thank you to all of our parent volunteers that helped

Reflections

Entertainment Book Fundraiser

On October 9th a flyer for

this year’s PTA Reflections

program will be sent home

with each student describing

the program and entry

regulations. This year’s theme

is “The Magic of a Moment….”

Every student can enter one

project to each category with

the explanation of what The

Magic of a Moment means in

their art work.

This is a great program

that allows our LME students

to showcase their talents on a

school, county, and state level.

Last year LME was privileged

to have 3 winners at the

County level and a Honorable

mention at the State level–

Alexander McColley - Film

production. All students will

be awarded for their

participation at the school level

during a ceremony in early

November.

In addition to the forms

being sent home, we will post

them on the PTA website.

The full program and

guidelines can be found at

http://www.floridapta.org/

programs/reflections .

This program will run

until Tuesday, October 30th

when all entries will need to be

submitted in the Media Center

between 8 am and noon.

We look forward to

seeing what the Magic of a

Moment means to our students

at Lake Magdalene!

We are wrapping up another successful Entertainment

Fundraiser. I would like to thank all of the students and

parents for participating this year. All of your hard work helps

the Lake Magdalene PTA to continue to offer great programs

throughout our school year! We appreciate all your hard

work.

We will be delivering the Ice Age prizes when they arrive

at Lake Magdalene in two weeks.

Homeroom Parents

Thank you to all the parents who have signed up to

be either a Homeroom parent or a Co-Homeroom

parent. You will be such a help to our wonderful

teachers at Lake Magdalene.

We are still in need of a Homeroom Parent for the

following teachers: Ms. Bokor, Ms. Broughton, Ms.

O’Sullivan, Ms. Williams, Ms. Leach, Ms. Olinger

and Mr. Cullen. Please consider helping these

teachers. You will have plenty of support from the

Homeroom Coordinators, Theresa and Melissa. The

support includes pre-approved letters you can use,

newsletters for each quarter and a folder with useful

information to use as a reference. Email any questions

to: [email protected].

Read-A-Thon

Our annual Read-A-Thon will start on

October 2nd and will run until October

18th. Mrs. Ferrara, our media specialist, is

very excited about chairing this wonderful

fundraiser this year.

Gear up for a fantastic time with lots of

books. Remember 100% of all funds

collected benefit our school. Half of the

proceeds your child earns will go directly

to the their classroom.

Cold Stone

Our first 5th grade Cold Stone fund-raiser was

a HUGE success!

We sold a whopping 600 cups of ice cream!!!

Thank you to all the parents and students who

purchased Cold Stone ice cream to support the

5th grade.

An enormous thank you from the 5th grade

committee to Jill F., Jessica D., Melissa L., and

Keri P. for volunteering your time.

Dads’ Club News

Beautification Project

If you wait for your children in front of the school,

or just drive by occasionally, you have undoubtedly

noticed some significant changes since the end of last

school year. In an area where parents and children

once stood in dirt and blazing sun, there is now a

paved courtyard with shade trees and benches. This

beautification initiative is a result of all of the hard

work and fundraising efforts by the LME Dads' Club.

The Dads’ Club designed and funded the majority of

the project, with help from LME PTA and the school

to close some of the funding gaps.

Fishing Derby/Picnic

Come out and enjoy a fun-filled day at the Dads'

Club annual Fishing Derby and Family Picnic. It will

be held Saturday October 13th at the Tampa Bay Bap-

tist Conference Center.

The Fishing Derby is from 8am until 10am on the

shores of beautiful Lake Platt. Fishing gear and bait

will be provided but feel free to bring your own equip-

ment if you choose.

The Family Picnic begins at 11am and lasts until

3pm. The picnic will include food, bouncies, games,

face painting and music. Everything is free of charge

for students, their families, faculty and staff.

Book Buddies

BOOKWORMS AND BIBLIOPHILES WANTED!

"The more that you read,

the more things you will know.

The more you learn,

the more places you'll go."

— Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"

Think of your favorite book. Think of how you

were filled with anticipation as you looked

forward to your next chance to read and be

carried away to a magical, mystical, dangerous,

or mysterious land. Now think about how you

would feel if you couldn’t read. Pretty boring,

right?

Reading is fundamental to the development of

children and countless research shows the links

between good reading skills from an early age and

future success in life. It develops the ability for

concentration and imagination, advances literacy

and enhances cultural and civic involvement. By

fostering a love of reading, you can help change

these statistics:

Students who don't read proficiently by third

grade are four times more likely to leave school

without a diploma when compared to proficient

readers.

Every school day in America, 3,000 students

drop out - the majority of them are poor readers.

Students with below grade level reading skills are

twice as likely to drop out of school as those who

can read on or above grade level.

Help pass the love of reading on to a child by

giving a little of your time once a week. For more

information on LME’s Book Buddies program and

how you can help, please contact Angela

Soiferman at 813.220.9035 or:

[email protected].

Corporate Sponsors

Are you a business owner- large or small? Or possibly know a business

that would like to help support your child’s school and community? Well

then we ask that you consider becoming a corporate sponsor of the LME

PTA for the 2012-2013. When doing so, you not only would be supporting

your community generally, but more specifically, the approximate 900

children of your neighbors, friends and customers who attend Lake

Magdalene Elementary.

Corporate sponsors have a choice of 3 different sponsorship levels to

choose from – Silver, Gold and Platinum. All levels have a variety of

rewards each with benefits of its own. On all levels the company logo/

brand will be included on the PTA banner that will hang at the front of the

school, as well as in our bi-monthly newsletters with over 1000+

circulation. Any support at any level is welcomed and greatly appreciated. If

you are interested in becoming a sponsor or helping find some, please

contact Melissa Laliotis or Stacy Spurlock at [email protected]
