M A Y 2 0 1 5 Dear Dragon Families, We are still in the midst of SBAC Testing. Our last testing day is May 21st..I am very proud of our students for trying their best on the test. An April activity I want to mention is the Academic Olympics. This was a stellar night for our students as they competed for the gold. We had about fifty students participated. Teams of six worked together on answering standardized test release questions, for fourth through eighth grades, in the areas of math, language arts, and science. Each participant received an Olympics of the Mind shirt and several students earned medals!! This month I want to give a special thanks to school personnel that work endless hours to make our school what it is. Without the support of our secretarial, custodial, and instructional assistants our school could not function. These people are an integral part of our school and assure that the important functions within the classroom continue. I want to thank each of these individuals for their dedication and commitment to making our school an exceptional place to work and learn. Our community members have supported us unconditionally. Without this support we would not be able to offer all of the many programs that are here for our students. I also want to thank our many volunteers. The work done by volunteers in our school is invaluable. Over and above the real services provided by volunteers, the act of volunteering itself serves as a powerful and positive message to our faculty, staff, and students. Finally, I want to thank our parents. Parenting, and the support of the educational process, is time consuming and difficult work. On behalf of our staff, and your children we thank you. Talk About School As you sit around the dinner table, talk about how important education is. Make sure your child understands that you use the things you learned in school on the job. Let him/her know that, just as you do your best at work every day, you expect him/her to do their best in school. How can you avoid those, “What did you do in school today?” “Nothing” conversations? Try asking more specific questions: • WHAT was the most

important thing you learned today?

• WHAT new assignments did you get?

• WHAT do you think your teacher will ask on the math test?

• Talk About School Pay attention to what comes home in your child’s backpack. If you know there’s been a school assembly, you can ask questions related to it. Share information about your own day. Sometimes just hearing about Mom or Dad’s day will give a child “permission” to talk about his/her own day at school.

2015-2016 School Year As the end of the year approaches, plans for classroom placements are being made. I will work closely with teachers to place current students. All students will be placed in heterogeneous classes with the best possible teacher match, a positive group of classmates, and a few familiar students from previous classes. Any specific academic needs will be taken into consideration first.

Parents are welcome to share any vital information with me that the school does not already have. This information must be in writing and may not include requests for specific teachers. Letters or emails must be received by May 30, 2015.

Please trust us to make the best placement possible for all children. It is important to us that students have successful academic and developmentally appropriate experiences in school with talented and caring teachers. Final placement information will be provided in August.

Lace up your sneakers next month and get ready for Suisun Valley School’s Jog-a-thon scheduled for June 1st. Families look for an email soon regarding the upcoming Jog-a-thon hosted by our 7th Graders and Student Council. The Jog-a-thon is to help support our 7th grade students who will be attending Yosemite next year and to support Student Council. We are asking friends and family to sponsor a runner in the upcoming Jog-a-Thon fundraiser. Please know that no amount is too small. Your ongoing backing and support are both truly appreciated.
