Finished size (approximate) 13cm (w) x 13.5cm (h) x 6cm (d) Materials Felt* in various colours (it feels nicer if it’s the 100% wool variety although any will do) Bread: 27cm x 28cm Crust: 1.2cm x 52cm strip (x 2) Tomato: 16cm x 24cm (approx) Lettuce: 15cm x 16cm Swiss cheese: 13.5cm x12cm Foam for inside the bread slices (27cm x 14cm x 1.2cm thick**). Buy from stores selling mattress foam. You can also use wool stuffing or polyfill but this tends to look bulgy. If you are after nice straight slices, foam works best. Embroidery thread to match or contrast to felt – whichever takes your fancy! * I used an old felted woollen jumper for the tomato. ** You can reduce the thickness of the foam with scissors. Try to be neat but no need for precision – the felt covering is fairly forgiving. Instructions Transfer the pattern templates for each of the sandwich ingredients on to the felt pieces. Cut out. Cut two crust strips. Bread: Lay one of your felt bread pieces on top of the foam, trace two slices with an air erasable marker. Cut out and put to the side. Using blanket stitch, sew the crust strip around the edge of a felt bread piece. Stitch the crust to a second felt bread piece, stopping half way to manoeuvre the foam into place. It’s best to do this now because the foam ‘sticks’ to the felt and it can be hard to wiggle into position. Blanket stitch to close. Trim excess crust, whip stitch to close. Repeat for second bread slice. Cheese: Using your scissors cut swiss cheese holes! Tomato: For each tomato slice I used a double piece of some thick, felted woollen jumper offcuts. Depending on the weight of your felt, use three pieces for each thick-ish tomato slice. Backstitch the tomato segment detail on the two outside felt pieces using a double thread. Blanket stitch the edges of the three pieces together. Lettuce: To create the veiny lettuce look, fold the felt where the veins are marked and backstitch along the dotted lines indicated on the pattern. Bon appetit!
