Finished size (approximate)13cm (w) x 13.5cm (h) x 6cm (d)
Materials• Felt* in various colours
(it feels nicer if it’s the 100% woolvariety although any will do) Bread: 27cm x 28cmCrust: 1.2cm x 52cm strip (x 2)Tomato: 16cm x 24cm (approx)Lettuce: 15cm x 16cm Swiss cheese: 13.5cm x12cm
• Foam for inside the bread slices(27cm x 14cm x 1.2cm thick**).Buy from stores selling mattressfoam. You can also use woolstuffing or polyfill but this tends to look bulgy. If you are after nicestraight slices, foam works best.
• Embroidery thread to match or contrast to felt – whichever takesyour fancy!
* I used an old felted woollenjumper for the tomato.
** You can reduce the thickness ofthe foam with scissors. Try to beneat but no need for precision –the felt covering is fairly forgiving.
InstructionsTransfer the pattern templates foreach of the sandwich ingredients onto the felt pieces. Cut out. Cut twocrust strips.
Bread: Lay one of your felt breadpieces on top of the foam, trace twoslices with an air erasable marker. Cutout and put to the side. Using blanketstitch, sew the crust strip around theedge of a felt bread piece. Stitch thecrust to a second felt bread piece, stopping half way to manoeuvre thefoam into place. It’s best to do thisnow because the foam ‘sticks’ to the felt and it can be hard to wiggleinto position. Blanket stitch to close.Trim excess crust, whip stitch toclose. Repeat for second bread slice.
Cheese: Using your scissors cutswiss cheese holes!
Tomato: For each tomato slice I useda double piece of some thick, feltedwoollen jumper offcuts. Dependingon the weight of your felt, use threepieces for each thick-ish tomato slice.Backstitch the tomato segment detailon the two outside felt pieces usinga double thread. Blanket stitch theedges of the three pieces together.
Lettuce: To create the veiny lettucelook, fold the felt where the veins aremarked and backstitch along thedotted lines indicated on the pattern.
Bon appetit!
