Flowers don’t always have to go in vases. Hardy blossoms like roses and mums are just fine hanging out sans water for several hours. Make sure you give them plenty to drink before arranging, and keep them out of the sun and heat for the longest lasting results.

Savannah’s Beer Growler is quickly

becoming one of our favorite places.

They sell the 32 oz. and 64 oz. Growler

bottles for $4.99 each, and you have

your choice of 40 taps pouring craft

beers, ciders, and sodas. All the

beverages are priced separately, you

simply pick what you want, they fill

your bottle, seal it, and send you on

your way. If you can’t decide what

you would like to take home, they

have the cutest little taster glasses.

Try it for yourself at the corner of

Drayton and Liberty Streets.

Home, Dear Home

Each issue, we hope to share an actual

home with our readers that stands out

for its great design, meticulous renovation,

or just because we love it!

Our first home belongs to Tim Burt, the

owner of a fabulous decor boutique in

Savannah’s Downtown Design District.

d.luxe has unique pieces from all over the

world to add to your home. He invited

us into his newly renovated historic

apartment where we were greeted with

the original heart pine floors, eclectic

accessories, and a velvety Sphinx named

Lord Horace.

An oversized Carrera marble island

provides an ideal gathering space in the

open kitchen and living room. Historic

windows open onto the outdoor terrace,

and vintage books abound.

What sort of services or product does your business offer? We offer women’s clothing, eco-friendly, and fashion forward, unique with a great backstory, as well as shoes and accessories. Many of our accessories are made domestically from California to Texas, and locally.

What is your favorite part about Custard? Dressing women and styling!

What are your top 3 favorite things to do in your free time? eat, shop, and kayak

What’s in your purse/toolbox that you couldn’t live without? my wallet.. for obvious reasons

Page 24: Let's Play, Dear

The Phoenix ring by Alkamie is hand cast in California by a husband and wife team. Made from recycled materials, this ring (and the others by them) are eco-friendly! The Phoenix wings spread across your hand in an elegant way, but can also be worn on one of our ADA belts as a faux belt buckle.

24

The puzzle pieces are an updated version of the widely known friendship necklaces. Made from brass by Monserat de Lucca, the necklaces fit perfectly together reading “Me” on one, and “You” on the other. Perfect for best friends, sisters, significant others, etc. They make great gifts!

Tara carefully curates every item in Custard Boutique. “Most of them have an

amazing backstory. Everything at Custard has purpose.” That said we couldn’t

help but get the story behind two of our favorite jewelry pieces..

Page 25: Let's Play, Dear

What do you most fear and/or dislike? in a perfect world when I wouldn’t have to worry about real world issues such as starving children and tainted water... I would say- spilling something on my all white blouse at an event when I can not change... haha

What living person do you most admire? deep question- someone fearless! I love people who are able to be themselves

What’s your spirit animal and why? my dog Manchester- for further explanation, you will just have to meet him

Greatest achievement... this store!!!

How do you find inspiration? everything around me... magazines, blogs, other people, music, movies... you name it. I am always taking in everything I see, eat and do!

What brought you about doing what you do? How/why did you start your business? I have always loved helping women look and feel as beautiful as I think they are. I love being able to help someone make simple changes that go a long way, and that is truly the reason I got started in the industry... (i.e. I love make-overs....) I was a buyer for an indie store in the town where I am from, and I used that experience and my personal eye to build a business for myself here in the lovely Savannah.

What is your greatest extravagance? shoes

Page 26: Let's Play, Dear

Start with the perfect utensils like these mint, powder coated, vintage ones from Rethink.

Spray paint a hearty leaf, like a magnolia, and dip the tip in glitter for the place cards. Add

some cozy velvet ribbon to embellish rustic linen napkins. Try vintage for the best colors.

Find a loose knit sweater at a thrift store, or an old one from your closet and cut it into a

table runner. The knit will unravel, so if you want to reuse it next fall, sewing will be involved.

Let’s party

The arrival of fall fashion is a perfect

reason to throw a party. Invite the girls

over in their latest fall finds, have a few

of the latest fashion magazines to peruse

for must haves and must nots. Offer a

selection of cheeses and chocolates with

an autumnal soup. For the beverage,

an acai concoction. Might as well enjoy

some antioxidants while you’re enjoying

yourselves.

Shake ingredients with ice.

Pour and garnish.

Create a simple garland by collecting magnolia

leaves. Spray paint them in your color palette,

and dip the tips in glitter for extra fun. Wire

two to three leave together, then wrap the wire

around a rope or ribbon. Work from the ends

to the middle to ensure both ends have leaves

pointing outward. When you are done, fill in any

blank spaces with additional leaves and some

glue. (hot glue works best)

This garland also looks great on fireplace mantels,

banister railings or around a doorway. Start with

a wire wreath frame to make a wreath.

Curried Carrot Soup // Martha Stewart2 tablespoon. Butter1 cup chopped onion1 teaspoon curry powder3 1/2 cups of reduced-sodium broth2 pounds carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubesFresh lemon juice from one lemonPurple basil to garnish

-Heat butter, add onion, curry, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is soft.-Add broth, carrots, and 3 cups of water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.-Puree in a blender in batches until smooth. Transfer to a clean saucepan. Add more water to thin to desired consistency. Stir in lemon juice.

Page 31: Let's Play, Dear

31

Let’s eat

When presenting a cheese plate at a party, be

sure to offer a variety of hard and soft, strong

and mild cheeses. Fine cheese counters will often

let you taste a new variety before purchasing.

Whatever you choose, make sure the appropriate

serving and cutting utensils are handy.

Cheese pairs well with honeycomb and figs.

Crostinis or crackers are always welcome, and a

nice dry salami adds a salty element.

Host a cheese tasting party where everyone

brings their favorite, or one they’ve wanted to try.

Beautiful chocolates are welcome at any table.

These artisan truffles were made by Savannah’s

Adam Turoni. Our selection includes: Georgia

Peach Truffles made with peach preserves, liquor,

white chocolate and pecans. Habanero Caramel

Truffles topped with sea salt. Roasted Fig and

Cognac Truffles dusted with cocoa.

When choosing chocolates, the higher cocoa

content the better. It offers a richer flavor, and

is not as sweet as their milky counterparts.

Although at the end of the day, it’s chocolate, and

all answers are correct!

While the cool breeze is starting to roll in a smile shouldn’t be the only thing we are adding to our face! Even with a slight change in the weather, our skin can begin to shift. Try using a heavier moisturizer before winter itch hits.

Now that you have your summer glow, don’t cover it up with too much makeup. Transitioning into a lighter skin tone can be easy with at home airbrushing. Products including oil free foundation, blush, highlighter, bronzer, and even a self-tanner can provide a sheer to heavy coverage depending on your needs. Cover trouble areas and let your beauty shine through! TEMPTU at home systems are the best on the market with easy to use products and virtually no mess.

One hot trend this fall is gold! Using a simple wash of gold on the lid can provide a lot of impact in little time. You can easily go from day to night with a adding a small flick to your eyeliner for a cat eye or adding a touch of blue liner below. Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream in #12 is a favorite of Team Dollface!

Red lips are always in fashion but finding the right shade is typically the hard and sometimes intimidating part. The key for first timers is to pick a color that has a berry or blue undertone. These reds are rich and universally flattering. I recommend starting with a stain and moving up the intensity based on your comfort level. You can create your own stain easily but putting on your chosen red first in your makeup application, then wiping it off at the end. You will be left with a beautiful, easy to wear color without having to buy two products. Any lipstick you like will work well!

I recommend Embryolisse with is wonderful for all skin types and is also a 3-in-1 product serving as a moisturizer, primer, and makeup remover. Also make sure to exfoliate a minimum of 3x per week.

Upon entering Rethink Design Studio, we were struck by two things. 1> This space is

perfectly appointed and we can only hope our homes look like this one day. And 2> Amidst

the volumes of decorating and lifestyle magazines, is a stocked mini bar with a fabulous

vintage pitcher. We didn’t want to leave. Every floor of the home and office had so much to

see and inspire. The talented husband and wife duo, Joel & Erica Snayd, design residential

and commercial spaces all over Savannah, and then some. When the perfect lighting fixture

or detail can’t be found, they make it. In addition to interiors, they also plan, design, and

execute events like Savannah Magazine’s Best of Savannah Party this September. With such

warm and welcoming hosts, we were happy to stay for a drink, and oooohhh and aaahhhh.. Form + Function = Perfection

Sleeping in this third floor loft style bedroom would definitely make mornings easier.

The oversized skylight over the stairs and ample windows wash the room in light.

The natural wooden floors and white walls are punctuated by chartreusey greens

and cool aquas. The family pup feels right at home in many rooms of the home and

office with fireplace dog beds. Have you seen a cooler bassinet? It’s a perfect meld

of form, function, and whimsy.

Handy Household Tip - Attach loops of twill tape to your bath towels. The loop allows them to hang easily over a hook. By not being folded over a towel bar, drying time is shortened, and all while adding color to your space.

For this issue’s fabulous kid’s room, we stayed at Rethink, where Joel & Erika created a cheery

space for their son, Rye, inspired by the bear painting in the upper right image. This room

has lots of kid friendly elements, yet an adult feels completely comfortable in the space. When

designing a nursery, be careful about making it too baby. By selecting furniture and art pieces

that can grow with your child, not only will you save money in the long run, but it makes for

a visually appealing space for the kid in everyone.

Industrial conduit pieces attach to the

side of the armoire to hold several totes.

An idea that is inexpensive, functional,

and chic. It is also easily translated into

any space: aprons in a kitchen, purses in

the closet, hoses in a garden shed. Be

sure you select the appropriate hardware

and anchors for your substrate and

potential weight load.

and serves as a couch in the meantime. Sock puppets guard the four posters. Fun fact: this

bed was made out of two footboards thrifted at a yard sale.
