Each year, thousands of youth are faced with the unbelievableagony of childhood obesity. With this dilemma on the rise, DJWhoota joined forces to help with the national Let’s MoveCampaign by First Lady Michelle Obama with recognition fromWAT-AAH! to find a way to inspire youth to move while havingfun.

As a child, DJ Whoota now age 19, remembers how manychildren teased and taunted him for not being the averageweight. “My mother would make me get off of the couch and gooutside to play, she would even take the time to go out with me.She always told me that being heavier than others changed myappearance and not my heart. She would find ways for me tokeep up my heart rate so that when the pounds started shedding,my heart wouldn’t be weak. We enjoyed dancing, basketball, bikerides and swimming, but the one activity that I thought was funand not exercise was dancing. So, today I have vowed to take astand to help others find ways to enjoy a healthy and balancedlife while reaching goals during movement. As a disc jockey, Imove the crowd, but now I am challenging the youth to ‘MoveYour Body’ with Beyonce’s Flash Workout. “

DJ Whoota along with WAT-AAH, Believe In Me YouthOrganization (BIMYO) and iZiggy Promotions have teamed up toform an after school ritual for the youth that encourages them toreach successful goals while staying active and fit.

The goals of ‘Let’s Move’ is to increase the movement in after school programs within the North Carolina region. Each program that participates will receive supplies to replenish their programs for the school year. DJ Whoota will visit after school programs on ‘Keep Moving It Friday’s’ during the months of October – December

There will be prizes given at each start of the program to encourage the youth to continue to move. We have partnered with many community partners that are willing to give out exercise equipment, passes to the gym and more for the student that moves the most.

As a part of the ‘Let’s Move’ initiative, we have adapted the ‘Move Your Body’ Flash Workout by Beyonce. This workout is full of movement and best of all, it’s fun! The students will learn the steps to the ‘ Move Your Body’ Flash Workout with a live dj.

Each program will received a copy of the workout to continue in the efforts of staying fit. As the program comes to a close in December, we will have an event that will allow all of the programs to join together to perform the ‘Move Your Body’ Flash Workout.

• Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008. The prevalence of obesity among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years increased from 5.0% to 18.1%.

• Obesity is the result of caloric imbalance (too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed) and is mediated by genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. Childhood obesity has both immediate and long-term health impacts:

– Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. In a population-based sample of 5 to 17 year-olds, 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

– Children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.

– Obese youth are more likely than youth of normal weight to become overweight or obese adults, and therefore more at risk for associated adult health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.

• Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming obese and developing related diseases.

DJ Whoota will select 15 afterschool programs to involve in the movement of ‘Let’s Move’. These programs will consist of the following:

10 programs: Ages 5-12

5 programs: Ages 13-16

Each of these programs will focus on 11 weeks of movement with the Move Your Body Flash Workout. While being instructed on the workout, students will also have a one time overall instruction on the importance of healthy eating, dieting, and the importance of drinking water.

At the end of the program, each participating site will receive a bulk of school supplies and instructions on how to keep their students fit and active. We will also host an event for all of the students to perform the Move Your Body Flash Workout for their family and friends to see the difference that the program has made within their lives.
