Archivists and media scholars need to take on new practices, such as
organizing hackathons or marathons, to facilitate the creative
re-‐use of archival material.
Why do archives have to facilitate the processes of creatively re-‐using audiovisual content?
Who should be included and how in the creative re-‐use of audiovisual works?
the facilitation of creative re-‐use as means for integration,
the outreach of immigrant communities and its benefits for archives,
the development of media literacy in the collaborative process, and
the challenges of re-‐using archive material legally.
Analysis
the facilitation of creative re-‐use as means for integration
The inclusion of marginalized communitiesshould be embedded in the facilitation practices in
relation to creative re-‐use and contextualization of the archives.
the outreach of immigrant communities and its benefits for archives
Video makers wanted to find material that was visually effective, aesthetically attractive and provided their creations the right atmosphere.
Searchability and easy retrieval in the archive become keys towards creative re-‐use.
the development of media literacy in the collaborative process
”This was a great learningexperience, because I have donevideo poems before but in a very
different way”
the challenges of re-‐using archive material legally
“I added the archive from where I took the footage, do you need
something more there?”
Discussion
It is in the process of observing the negotiations and challenges of practitioners that it is possible to
learn and draw directions to the archives.
Co-‐create in order to understand the implications for design and the creative industry and how we could improve media retrieval, browsing and
authoring applications.
Hackathons or cultural hacks are good collaborative spaces for this.
Discussion
We need to build a rapport between the archives and the remix communities, the enthusiastic video
makers, who are not professional but are eager to tell stories re-‐using audiovisual archives.
The empathic relation with the makers is crucial to prepare the field for the changes to come.
