The best shoppingstreet in the worldNo, it isn't Oxford Street, the Champs-Elysees, or even Fifth Avenue. A newsurvey shows that the most popular shopping street in the world is ... Nowy Swiat.Where's that? In Warsaw, Poland, of course. by ANNE APPLEBAUM
vlf you're tired, stop at Cafe Blikle.'
Arecent survey hasshown that thebusiest shoppingstreet in the worldis not in London,
New York, or Paris, but inWarsaw. It's called Nowy Swiat(pronounced /novi JVist/), whichmeans New World. An incredible14,000 Poles walk down thismain street every hour.
It is a lovely place to shop. Thepavements are very wide. Thereare statues, palaces, attractivetown houses, exclusive cafes, and high-class restaurants. Thebuildings aren't too tall. Theylook old, but in fact the wholecity was rebuilt after World War II.There aren't any billboards or
neon lights. There isn't any loudmusic, and there aren't manytourists. People think thatPolish shops have nothing tosell, so nobody comes shoppinghere. The world doesn't know
'There are a lot of small, chic shops.'
about this paradise for shoppers- yet.
It is now possible to buyalmost everything in Warsaw. There are a lot of shops from theWest, but the interesting thingis that Polish manufacturers arenow producing high qualitygoods. They are good becausethey are not mass produced forworld consumption.
Nowy Swiat has a lot of smallshops, specialist shops, and chicshops. It hasn't got the hugedepartment stores that sell thesame things everywhere.
If you want an exquisite hand-made suit, Nowy Swiat is theplace to go. It isn't cheap. Youwill pay up to £1,000. Forbeautiful French baby clothes,go to Petit Bateau. You will pay£50 for a pair of blue jeans for ababy. A dress for a baby girl isabout £90. At Desa, a famousantique shop, a desk costs
£5,000, and a 19th centuryRussian icon is £200.
Not everything is expensive. At the shop Pantera you canbuy leather goods - handbags, purses, coats, and belts. Cepeliaspecializes in folk art. There arealso book shops and recordshops. And there are a lot ofsmall boutiques that sell men'sand women's clothes that aren'ttoo expensive.
If you're tired, stop at CafeBlikle. This is a fashionableplace to meet. You'll find alively atmosphere, and a lot ofwell-known Poles. The frozenyoghurt and ice-creams areexcellent, and its famousdoughnuts are delicious.
It is possible to travel the worldand find the same things for salein every country. But Warsaw isdifferent because its shops areunique - and they're in NowySwiat.

8 Read the information. Write OS (Oxford Street), CM (CamdenMarket), or CS (Carnaby Street).
Carnaby Street was a famous London street in the 1960s when theBeatles were young and Britain was the centre of pop and fashion.Unfortunately, it is now a place for tourists where there isn’t muchto buy except postcards and badly-made souvenirs.
Oxford Street in central London is world-famous for its shops. However, many tourists find it isn’t very interesting: the shops nearMarble Arch are large department stores selling mass-producedthings and at the other end of the street there are smaller shopsselling cheap clothes and electrical goods.
Camden Market is in a fashionable area of north London. Morethan 9 million visitors go there every year. The market is open allweek but it is busiest at the weekends. If you don’t mind being withlots of people, it’s great walking along the streets looking at thejewellery, clothes, and antique stalls. There are lots of smallspecialist shops and stalls selling interesting things from all over theworld, so make sure you have lots of time to look around.
