This year, as we stand in the threshold of centennial celebration as legitimate owners of this movement, it is

our ardent responsibility to engage in service areas that have been defined by Lions International under the theme

“where there is a need there is a Lion “.We are happy that we have accomplished approximately 90% of main target of

District Digest - “Let’s Excel to Welcome 100”2

The Lions movement was blessed with an energetic and committed member in 2003, who was introduced to Lionism by Lion A. S. Nalaka and Inducted as a member of the Lions Club of Biyagama, by no less a person than PID Lion Asoka Z De Gunasekara. He proved his metal, as a charismatic leader, climbing the ladder of Lionistic hierarchy, to reach the pinnacle of success as the District Governor for the current year, the highest status that one could reach in District Leadership.

A Vignette of

our District Leader

A Large-Hearted LionHis amiable personality endeared him to all, making him a popular figure, wherever he ventured. His lilting voice has been put to good use, not only to ‘break the ice’ at every forae, but also to create a sense of goodwill & bon homie! His compositions are sung at all significant Lions’ events, as they embody the essence of Lionism.

One significant event worthy of mention, is the time a few years ago, when he organized a fundraiser ‘Song Fest’ for the District, where he took the initiative to invite orphans from all over the country, free of charge, for the matinee show. It was something that had never been done before & the delight on the faces of the kids, was thanks enough! Surely does this not embody the spirit of Lionism?

A Man of Many talentsHe excelled in many Lionistic fields, such as New Club Extensions, which led to significant Membership Development. This earned him the ‘Membership Development Master Key Award,’ in addition to being nominated for 03 consecutive years, as the ‘Most Versatile Lion of the Year’ (2007 -2008, 2009 – 2010, 2012 – 2013) He also received several International Presidents’ & ‘Appreciation Awards.’

the Lion LeaderHe was always keen to share his knowledge by grooming Lions in Leadership Skills. This he did by organizing several significant ‘Leadership Seminars’ covering the

entire District, which benefitted many up & coming Lion, also helping clubs to improve their productivity. Thus, he demonstrated his abiding concern for the welfare of his fellow-Lions, through out his Lionistic career.

the ProfessionalIn spite of his involvement in Lionism, his professional life was not put on the back-burner. His flare for Information Technology, resulted in him establishing his own company, ‘Digicom Technologies’. At present this versatile entrepreneur

heads a consortium of companies,‘Digicom Security Services’ and ‘Digicom Institute of Information

Technology’ where he is the CEO / Managing Director & his quietly efficient wife,

functions as the Working Director.

A Highly Qualified Lion

His desire to constantly challenge himself,

has made him acquire much knowledge and

certificates in Loinism. He has attended RLLI, ALLI and

FDI Programmes conducted by Lions International and

has the distinction of being the ONLY graduate in the Multiple

District 306, who has obtained the FDXEX qualification. A rare &

unique honour! His academic achievements are no less impressive. With a Diploma in Computer Science, Diploma in Hardware Engineering, Post Graduate Degree in Business Management , from the University of Colombo and Aquinas University College, under his belt, he is fully equipped to meet demands of the High- Tech Society that, we live in. He has also obtained membership in the coveted British Computer Society.

HIS VISION

& MISSION

His dream is to make a significantly lasting contribution to the Lions

Movement, as the District Leader, when our‘Global Movement’ celebrates

100 years of Humanistic Service in 2017. He will spear head the

development of a strong BRAND IMAGE for the Organization by

strengthening the Clubs in the District, ensuring EXCELLENCE

IN MEMBERSHIP & SERVICE, facilitatingand supporting

EXCELLENCE IN CLUB ADMINISTRATION and EFFECTIVE

HUMANITARIAN SERVICE, thereby enabling the District

to step into a ‘GLORIOUS NEW CENTURY.’

“Let’s Excel to Welcome 100” - District Digest 5

A considerable amount of lions had planned to go to Japan to attend the 99th International Convention and fortunately approximately 1200 lions were granted visa without much restrictions. We left Sri Lanka on 24th as scheduled and arrived in Japan via Narita and reached our final destination Fukuoka where the Convention was held. We were accommodated at Fukuoka Clear Court Hotel in the main hub of the city and close to the Convention Halls.

Next day morning on 25th June the most exciting event of any Convention, the International Parade was held and in spite of poor weather conditions with intermittent drizzling and rain a large contingent of lions & ladies from Sri Lanka in yellow dresses participated giving the onlookers an impressive picture like a flock of yellow birds flying together.Nearly 35000 lions all over the world gathered for this very colourful International Parade dressed in various national costumes and Sri Lankan parade was the longest with over 1000 committed lions participating. The commitment of Sri Lankan Lions was richly rewarded by being adjudged the second best parade at the convention parade.

It was a busy schedule with a hive of activities ,the International show being held the same day night followed by seminars, awareness programmes, dinners and the speeches of the candidates seeking the high offices of the 1st , 2nd and 3rd Vice Presidents and the 1st Year International Directors in the next two days.

The 99th International Convention was more significant that for the first time in the history of International Association of Lions Clubs office of a 3rd Vice President of the Association was constituted.

The elections were held at Marine Mess in the morning of 28th June 2016 to elect the International President, Vice Presidents & 1st year Directors. Same day afternoon all the delegates gathered at the Fukuoka Yahuoku Dome to see the election result and witness the future Leaders of Global Lionism and their District Governors take the oath

of office. I was fortunate to be present along with a large number of lions from District 306 B2 Sri Lanka to witness our Lion Nimal Senadeera taking oaths as District Governor District 306 B2. Lion Naresh Agrawal from our neighbouring country India was elected as 1st Vice President and it was note worthy that for the first time in the history of Lionism a lady was elected as the International 2nd Vice President for the ensuing year when we are celebrating 100 years of lionism. A significant landmark during a significant year and this fortunate lady lion was none other than Lion Gudrun Yngvadottir from the small country Iceland. Lion Jung-Yul Choi from South Korea was elected as 3rd Vice President.

Apart from the lionstic activities during the Convention it was the Japanese culture & the people’s hospitality what we experienced and enjoyed the most. I am of the opinion that we have a considerable amount to learn from the Japanese people such as habits, attitudes, loyalty to the motherland and their commitment for the development of their country.

We also had the opportunity of visiting various places in Japan like Hiroshima, Nagasaki which were badly affected due to atomic bomb blast in 1945, Kobe, Mount Fuji, Hakone & Tokyo etc. There was no difference of their culture & attitude and very specially their simplicity, punctuality, their willingness to respect others and commitment to safeguard the environment & development the motherland while maintain cleanliness throughout. I think all above form the core values in their success.

I believe as lions if can take a cue from these Japanese practices we can contribute our fair share to the development of our movement, our clubs and our families and finally in the achievement of the development goals in our motherland.

Therefore let me finally request all the lions who visited Japan to introduce these practices in your clubs, in your families for your own success, success of the clubs and finally the success of the country.

Yet another land mark event is scheduled to take place in the city of Colombo, that will be of immense importance to all our Lions. It will be the ISAAME Forum expected to be held at BMICH Colombo from 30th November 2016 to 3rd December 2016 The Multiple District 306 is privileged to host it, this year, for the second time in its 50 years of history, when it was held for the first time in Kenya in 1966. The Sri Lankan forum will be the 44th of its kind. The theme for the oncoming Forum will be “Towards the New Century of Service”

The Colombo forum targeting around 2000 participants both Foreign and Local participants will assume greater significance at a time when Multiple is fielding a nominee to the prestigious position of International Director. He is no other person than our own star Past Leader from District 306 B2 PCC Lion Mahesh Pasqual. Hence, we have a moral obligation to attend this event in display our solidarity with him. Since this occasion also will provide, an

opportunity for our local counter parts to interact with other Lions from the I S A A M E Region it will be a forum not to be missed at any cost. We will also be adequately rewarded with several benefits such as getting an opportunity to listen to eminent speakers in the International arena participating

in presentations and competitions. It will also provide us an insight of conducting an International event

of huge magnitude. Therefore your Participation fee of Rs 25,000/= will pay you enough dividends.

So Lions, let’s attend this function in numbers, as a show of strength to our

distinguished Nominee PCC Lion Mahesh to the important portfolio of International Director

in Lions international It will also fortify ourselves in knowledge on Lionism to take our beloved Movement to the next century of service along with our present Centennial District Leader.
