Let’s talk pavers

If you’re reading this book, it means you’re thinking about changing part of your home.

We are here to help. We want you to find the right walkway, entrance, deck, courtyard,

retaining wall or whatever makes your house a better place to live.

With any hardscape project, there’s a lot to think about. What does your landscape

look like now? What will you keep? What will you change? How will the color of your door

affect the color of your driveway? Do you want more shade? Do you want more sun?

Take a look at the Classico® random pavers with Classico® rectangular borders in

the winding path pictured to the left. For this walkway, the pavers are a blend of

light and dark colors, set in a running bond pattern. Notice how the

wandering nature of the path and the contrast of the pavers create an atmosphere of

constant movement. How would the path inspire you if it were set in a herringbone

pattern? How would it look in front of your home?

Make food, serve drinks. This one’s pretty obvious. We’ll leave the recipes toyou and the Food Channel™.

Make up a story, thenembellish it. Tell everyonethat you built a new patiobecause your crazy uncleneeded a place to land his helicopter when he’s intown. The wilder the better.Make sure plenty of peoplehear your tale. They’ll berepeating it the next day.

Finally, laugh a lot and justrelax. After all, it’s a party.

How to throw a party

6

First, you need a place to play. A patio made ofpavers, for instance.

Next, find a reason tocelebrate. Millard Filmore’sbirthday is always a goodexcuse (it’s January 7, by the way). Or you couldalways have some folksover just to see your new patio.

Invite some people. Inviteyour friends. Invite yourneighbors. Invite yourfamily, the people fromwork or someone you’vealways wanted to meet. Ifyou can’t think of anyoneelse, invite us. Everyone atPaverSystems™ likes agood party. Except for thefolks in delivery. They stay pretty busy.

It’s a good idea to think about the relationship

amongst all of the elements in your landscape.

Look for a balance. It can be formal and rigid

so that the elements mirror one another. Or

it can be more casual and create a different

visual sense.

It’s also a good idea to think about the actual

size of the space you are transforming. Driveways

usually cover a lot of ground, and therefore,

have a larger visual impact than a patio at the

side of the house.

Another thing you’ll want to consider is when

and how you’ll use your paved area. In Florida,

you may want to avoid very dark stones in areas

that you’ll frequent, like a patio or pool. The sun

will make them hotter than some lighter colors.

Remember, PaverSystems™ pavers are made to

last a lifetime. So, plan for the long haul.

Pools rock

It’s simple. If you live in Florida, chances are good that you like the water. And your

pool is a beautiful body of water all to yourself. The last thing you want to do is surround

it with a surface that fails to match the splendor of the water. After all, you do a lot more

than swim in a pool. Sometimes, all you do is watch it. Sometimes, all you do is sit

by it. And sometimes, you just make sure the kids don’t splash your mother-in-law.

PaverSystems™ understands. We live here, too. We know that a house is more than

a home, and a pool is more than a hole in the ground. From the pathway to the deck,

there’s a lot you can do to make your little piece of paradise even better. Give the

deck a pattern. Add a little color. Think about how it feels on your bare feet. In the end,

it should be as easy to love your pool as it is to love the water in it.

31You must have a pool. Thisgame does not work in thewoods, on the golf courseor in your great-aunt’s RV.

You need at least onefriend. Anyone will do.Preferably someone whocan swim. (This is probablya good time to mentionthat a really cool paverdeck is a good place tomake friends. Even if theydon’t play Marco Polo.)One person is designated“it” and closes theireyes. Eyes must remainclosed throughout thatperson’s turn. (Which is ashame since they won’t beable to see that beautifulpaver deck of yours.)

The person who is “it”loudly says the word “Marco.”The other people playingmust then respond by loudlysaying the word “Polo.”Any other word is notacceptable and could resultin immediate disqualification.

Play continues until everyonegets sick of the game, decides it’s time to get out of the pool andonto the paver deck to grab a snack.

Pools are a primary focal point of landscape

design. The reason is understandable. Because

of its size and visual appeal, it’s hard to hide

a pool. So, should it be right next to the house?

Should it be tucked in a corner of the yard?

What does it look like from the garden? What

does the garden look like from the pool?

One thing that most people wish they had

is more deck space. The area around a pool

sees as much action as the pool itself. Usually

more. You’ll want plenty of room to relax at a

table, lounge in a chair, entertain or simply walk

around. With a well-balanced design, you can

use the pool area even when you don’t use

the pool.

Meeting in public

Our communities are born in public spaces. Imagine how an architect feels designing

a development, shopping mall or park. How do you produce an intimate space in

something the size of a football field?

Widen the sidewalk to make room for café seating. Make the rear parking lot more

attractive and welcoming. Watch how people interact. They mix and mingle and bump into

each other. They smile. They say hello. Constant encounters connect people to each

other and to a place.

Pavers are an important part of that experience..The right path completely

transforms the look and feel of a park. A playground comes alive with added touches of

color and design. The local coffee shop becomes a hangout when its patio is more

inviting..In any public space, pavers set the stage for more personal contact.

Did you know? There is safety in numbers. The security of a publicspace depends less on the kinds of people whomeet there than on howmuch activity is going on.More activity equals safer streets.

There is more todesign than meetsthe eye.Designing public spacealso involves manymeasurable factors. Traffic

European communities have long used pavers.

They match the character of those dignified

towns and villages. When pavers were first

brought to America (in part by PaverSystems™),

those kinds of public presentations gave

architects the idea of using the same distinct

material in private homes and drives.

Since then, managing public space has

come a long way. More and more emphasis is

being placed on creating unique venues that let

people interact with their environment.

Everything is being designed to maximize our

comfort level–from flowerbeds to markets to

the streets themselves. We don’t know what

will happen tomorrow, but pavers are making

our communities more livable today.

Backyard retreat

A good patio is more than a backyard retreat. It’s the center of family entertainment,

outdoor living and the great American cookout. Even when it threatens to rain, there’s

always the hope of a mad dash to the grill to feed the body and soul.

There are few places where a comfortable setting is so essential.

And there are few places where you have so many chances to experiment with design

and color. Not all patios need to be rectangular or square. By following the curves of

your landscape, you can create a unique framework that blends in with your house and

lifestyle.

Or, you can make a dramatic statement that clearly marks your gatheringspot. Whatever you decide, be sure to make room for the cook.

Quick patio recipes

There’s no denying the appeal of a full-featured

grill atop an elegant paver patio. It’s a monument

to the joy of cooking outdoors. Not only is grilling

the world’s oldest and most universal form of

cooking, it’s the foundation of backyard entertaining.

No longer will hungry guests trample your lawn

while you and your grill stand alone by the pool.

They can quietly gaze at the beauty of the

durable, timeless paver patio beneath their feet

while you infuse the air with the scent of a

masterfully prepared meal. It’s an easy project

and the results are impressive.

Patios get a lot of traffic. Keep in mind how

you and your guests will move between the

house and the patio. Properly designed, your

patio becomes a seamless extension of your

home. Also, plan for the type of furniture and

accessories you’ll want to keep there. It’s

always better to have a little more space than

you think you’ll need.

You’ll find that many of our pavers will fit a

patio setting. From rustic to modern, smooth

to tumbled, this is one area where you’ll have

plenty of choices. Ultimately, the right paver is

simply the one that feels right for you and feels

like home.Above: This restaurant’s outdoor dining area is laid in a T pattern of Appian-Stone® square andrectangular combo pavers.

Simplicity is the key to a beautiful courtyard. Shaped by walls and often large or

irregular spaces, courtyards are an opportunity to combine practicality with fantastic style.

Larger courtyards give you a chance to experiment with a wider variety of plants,

accents and paths. Some very small courtyards are actually designed to be viewed from

above. In almost all cases, however, a courtyard’s purpose is to provide a group space

that allows people to congregate and move about in a natural manner. Careful

consideration should be given to its planning and design. The aim is to provide a

restful spot amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The originsof courtyards

Today’scourtyards

Courtyards today are just as popular, and

find their way into the blueprints of many of

today’s dream homes.

The functions of courtyards are numerous.

In crowded cities, they create privacy and

safety. In arid climates, courtyards provide

solar protection by having everything open

toward shaded space. Courtyards also serve

as a family living area, much like today’s family

room or patio. In addition to serving as a

sitting area on hot summer nights, they also

make for a comfortable sleeping environment

in good weather.

Courtyards have been an important architectural

element throughout recorded history. Evidence

of the oldest courtyard house comes from China,

where archaeologists confirmed the remains of

such a home that dated back to the year 11 BC.

22

The larger spaces of courtyards often allow for

more intricate patterns as well as accent designs

using pavers. Fans, semi-circles, diamonds

and other patterns help define the space and

provide focal points to stop and rest. Walls,

statues, planters and other elements can also

establish intimate spaces within the courtyard.

In addition to patterns and color, larger

surfaces let designers use more than one type

of paver with stunning effects. Simply changing

the type of paver can offset borders, walkways

and entrances. Finally, remember that courtyards

are about indoor/outdoor living. They aren’t

merely another place outside. In the best of

worlds, they are an extension of the place that

surrounds them.

The “WOW” factor

Before you close this book, spend 15 minutes thinking what you would do if you had a big

truckload of pavers and absolutely no rules.

Well, guess what. When it comes to designing with pavers, there really are no rules.Do you want the grandest mailbox approach in all of Florida? No problem. Want to recreate a

Rembrandt in stone on your patio? Imagine away. Want your son's name to be visible from

passing aircraft? All you need is the land, a good installer and the right combination of pavers.

Of course, you can opt for a nice, neat, symmetrical pattern of pavers. You'll end up with a

patio, walkway or public space that will be truly impressive. But when you step outside the box,

you can end up with a space that's truly remembered.

Just look at some of the ideas we're showing you here. No one steps over these pavers

nonchalantly. These areas are taken in, appreciated, and enjoyed for their individuality. Each of

these designs proves that there's nothing you can't do with pavers. Bring an installer your

wildest ideas, and we'll prove it.

pavers as your paint. Now, what

should the masterpiece look like?

Well, you could leave it all up to your

landscape architect or installer. But

this is your masterpiece. Your input

makes it your own personal art.

Creating art means creating

something that evokes an emotion.

So what emotions do you want the

space to evoke? Is this a place of

wild fun? Of calm order? A place of

reverence? Or exclusivity? In all,

what do you want people to think

and feel when they're here?

Determine that, and you'll lay the

make pavers?Pavers are made by blending natural stone and

sand with cement, water, color and a chemical

called admixture. This custom-blended mix is then

put through a machine that houses the many

varieties of molds that make up our selection.

A combination of intense vibration and pressure

create the finished product. Pavers develop their

performance strength, absorption and texture from

this process. Finally, the pavers are cured at over

100 degrees in a natural process called heat of

hydration. The result? A huge selection of durable

and unique pavers for whatever your next project

may be.

One of a kind

PaverSystems™ manufactures tens of millions

of pavers each year. They’re used in literally

thousands of applications and designs. However,

even with all those pavers and all those projects,

no two are exactly alike.

Every time you lay down a paver, the pattern,

color and site itself create something new and

different. Most forms of pavement, such as

concrete and asphalt, can limit your possibilities

for expression by obligating you to one color,

and by eliminating the opportunity for patterns

and texture. With pavers, though, the same

pattern can be laid using myriad color

combinations. In addition, the way you

manipulate the layout and the varying textures

of each individual paver to interact with the

environment creates an endless array of design

possibilities.

That’s one reason so many architects,

builders and homeowners turn to pavers for

new ideas and expressive designs. You want

someone to come to your house and say,

“This is beautiful. How did you do it?” Let

PaverSystems™ make this a reality.

Efflorescence

Efflorescence is a whiteresidue caused by limereleased from within thepaver. It does not damagethe paver and generallywears away over time. If you’d like, efflorescencecan be removed withcleaners made especiallyfor pavers. Sealing thepaver surface may also help.

Removing oilstains

Concrete pavers are notdamaged by oil leakingfrom a car; however, thestains can be difficult toremove. Treat them assoon as possible by wipingthe excess oil from thesurface and washing themwith detergent and hotwater. You may need to do this several times forparticularly stubborn stains. If the stains appearpermanent, it may beeasier to simply replacethe entire paver. Concretepavers are made to beremoved easily in just such a case.

Joint sand

Sand-filled joints may accumulate dirt with timeand traffic. However, someinstallations may lose jointsand due to wind andrunoff. In that case, simplyreplenish the joints withnew dry sand. If theproblem recurs, you maywant to seal the paversurface or use a joint sand stabilizer.

Sealing, color and wear

Pavers get their color byadding pigment to theproduction mix. Colors arevery stable, showing littlechange over time. However,as the surface wears fromtraffic or weather, there maybe a gradual change in color. It is not necessary to seal a paver surface. In manycases, you may want toretain the plain look of theunsealed color. Sealing yourpavers, however, preventsadded dirt from foot andvehicle traffic, ensures easiersurface cleaning, extendstheir initial appearance andenhances their color. It mayalso make the pavers naturalcolor somewhat darker.Consult your installer, or call PaverSystems™, to find outwhat’s right for your home.

Controlling pestsand weeds

A common concern of thoseinterested in pavers asopposed to concrete is theemergence of ants andweeds between pavingstones. Sealing your paversor using a joint sandstabilizer is the easiestsolution. The use of suchherbicides and pesticides as Roundup® and Amdro®

is also effective and will notstain or harm your pavers.

Maintenance

Installing pavers is an art and there are craftsmen

who spend their entire careers perfecting it.

While some homeowners are able to do the

job, particularly with smaller projects, we highly

recommend that you contact a pro.

Though it’s easier to install pavers than

poured concrete or hot asphalt, there are

many factors to consider to ensure a quality

installation: the soil subgrade, the aggregate

base, a sand bedding, the wearing surface of

the pavers, edge restraints, drainage structures

and, of course, color and pattern. Professional

installers also take into account the type of

project. A patio requires a slightly different

process than a driveway. A path on a hill needs

different treatment than a rooftop garden.

Experienced installers are your best bet for a

job well done. Complete details on installation

procedures are available at www.paversystems.com.

As importantly, we recommend professional

installers because many of them are skilled

landscape designers. If you’ve installed enough

entrances and pools and patios, you know what

works and what doesn’t. Often, an installer will

know that a particular color may look good in

the showroom, but looks completely different

in the real world. You’re probably already

working with someone. But if you’re not, call

us and we’ll be happy to recommend an expert

in your area.

manufactured “color-through,” meaning color is

consistently present throughout the brick, not

just on the face. While many manufacturers

aggressively promote facemix, where color is

present only in the outer layer of the paver,
