PATTY LEE ASKED US IN THE JUNE 2020 NEWSLETTER:

“HOW THE LIGHT AND LOVE OF CHRIST HAS CARRIED YOU IN RECENT WEEKS?” Here are some responses:

Primarily by revealing to me so clearly. How connected our church members are, even though apart. Everyone's efforts to push forward with Sunday School, sharing their funny and uplifting stories; technology the church is using to allow Prayer Team to meet "virtually" and to have the online and parking lot services; and the ongoing realization that being quarantined with Hubby is just dandy. —Martha Arizpe

We all know the song “This Little Light of Mine”. The first verse goes like this:

This little light of mine I’m going to let it shine

Oh, this little light of mine I’m going to let it shine This little light of mine I’m going to let it shine

Let it shine, all the time, let it shine

I hope that someway doing this COVID-19 pandemic that my light has shined when I have been out. I hope I gave a smile to someone or just said hi and it helped them to have a nice day. One way that I saw Christ light shine was that we were the recipient of an act of kindness. The car in front of us at Dairy Queen paid for our ice cream. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say. I then told the clerk to use the money I had ready to apply to the next person’s bill. So just maybe one person’s kindness started a chain reaction.

HOW THE LIGHT AND LOVE OF CHRIST HAS CARRIED YOU IN RECENT WEEKS? Here are more responses:

During the pandemic He showed me the love of St. John’s Prayer Ministry. He answered those prayers through the healing of my back; through knowing that even through death of family members and many friends He held me tight; through healing my brother’s pain from kidney stones; and, through my brother-in-law, Butch, who had a stroke on Mother’s Day – He helped us when we couldn’t visit due to the pandemic, but knowing we have a wonderful nephew who has stayed by his dad’s side and kept us informed.

He got R.E., Happy and I through that scary hail storm (new roof). He was there when I just couldn’t see the end to all this isolation by being by my side as I puttered in the garden and He showed me the beauty of my hard work and what His sunny weather and rain provided. As I walked each day He showed me the friendly faces of those who passed by, as we smiled and said hello to each other. As R.E., Happy and I sat on the patio He showed us how to keep smiling as the birds came to feed on our birdfeeders; watching the amazing, patient lizards (Mr. Green Jean, Zipper and Dino) who visited our backyard each day; and, gave us much happiness as we watched our baby swifts take their first flight.

And now as I write this, I received news about my recent mammogram and He will, know matter how it turns out, get us through. His love carries each of us every day. –Sharon Gibson

John 8:12 (CEB) Jesus Spoke…”I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me won’t walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

This could be a sad story, it is the true story of a funeral. My husband’s last remaining uncle passed to his heavenly reward two weeks ago. He was 91 years of age, and left behind a wife of 65 years, and a daughter, my husband’s favorite cousin. But, not a sad story, a story of celebration in a whole new, different light. You see, we attended his funeral in Iowa, by ZOOM.

We were able to see and talk to various family members, mostly nieces and nephews, and a few towns-folk with whom my husband grew up. We enjoyed the hymns, 4 altogether, and all without musical accompaniment. This beautiful Church of Christ congregation lifted their voices together in praise and worship, all to honor this lovely man of 91 years. You see, this is the uncle that taught my husband to fish, ride a bike, drive a car, and be a kind and loving person. We will miss Uncle, who is a saint in my husband’s eyes, and we were blessed to be able to share in the moments to celebrate his life. —Patty Lee

This recipe was given to me by my Mother in September of 1985. She told me that this is Grandma Mac’s recipe. Grandma loved dates, and often added cut up dates to the recipe. Thanks, Grandma! Love from Patty McMullen Lee

It is important that the ingredients are mixed in the order given.

½ c. shortening 1 c. sugar 2 eggs ½ tsp. salt 2 c. flour 1 t. soda (dissolve in about ¼ c. hot water) 1 t. sour cream (or milk with a few drops of vinegar) 2-3 mashed bananas 1 c. chopped nuts

Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes --Email Sharon one of your favorite recipes to share.

In sharp contrast to man’s take on “free” is God Almighty’s view - “free” means “free” - who knew, Webster

got it right! God has offered to any and all people the free gift of eternal salvation, paid for in advance by the crucifixion, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. We do not have to pay a thing – our debt was paid centuries before we were even a gleam in our daddy’s eyes. We have done nothing to deserve it – yet there is, eternal life forever, ours for the taking. No fine print will take it away – in fact, nothing will take it away. You only lose it if you should choose to – it is offered to us, not forced on us. And it is an immeasurably better deal than “free shipping”. And I do love a great deal.

Blessings, Martha Arizpe

The Free Gift

The current pandemic has shed a light on a fact that you probably are aware of if you have ever shopped online. The store ad pulls you in with “Free Shipping”, only to find that there is a catch: you must spend a specified amount of legal tender to qualify for the “free” shipping. Webster defines “free” as “not costing or charging anything”. Hmmm

– numerous businesses with an online presence are unaware of this definition.

A FUNNY STORY, BUT SO TRUE!

WHEN THE T.V. WENT DARK By Sharon Gibson

We were newlyweds on our honeymoon driving from Texas to Las Vegas (on our 45 day leave from Saudi Arabia). Back then we could drive 12 hours a day and it had been one of those long drives. We were hot and tired when we arrived at a motel. We settled in the room, showered and laid on the bed to cool down while watching T.V. When all of a sudden the T.V. went dark. R.E. looked at me and said, “What happened”. I said calmly, “Oh, the motel people are just checking to see if we got in okay.” R.E. immediately pulled the sheet up, while I started laughing. He said, “I knew you were kidding, but I couldn’t help myself, I had to cover up”. We, to this day, still laugh about it. BUT WHO KNOWS IT COULD BE TRUE!

What is your ‘Funny Story’?

Come on don’t be shy, we can all use a laugh!

How precious is your steadfast love, O Companioning Presence, We, your children, take refuge in the shadow of your wings… For in You is the very source of life, and in your Light do we see light… Open the hearts of those who live in darkness, O Beloved, That they might rise up and live in your Light. Amen.

My Acts of Kindness for July:

Love is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? Love is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? When fears assail me, rising up to accuse me, Each one in turn shall be seen in Love’s light… Teach me to be love, as You are Love; Lead me through each fear; Hold my hand as I walk through valleys of doubt each day, That I may know your peace. I believe that I shall know the Realm of Heaven, of Love, here on Earth! Wait for the Beloved, be strong with courage of the heart…
