Guide to Cable CapacityCable Capacity Calculation :
Note : this calculation only provides an estimate of the maximum load which can be physically contained within a ladder. The ability of that ladder to support such a load depends upon the spacing of its supports
Maximum capacity of the cables depends on the load resistance and support placement of the cable tray. Tables 1 to 3 below give typical weights and diameters (D) for BS6346 armoured and unarmoured stranded copper power and control cables. Cables with XLPE (cross linked polyethylene) insulation are usually slightly lighter so the information given may also be used for these cables too.
For all other types of cable (e.g. paper insulated cable or cable with aluminium conductors) refer to the cable manufacturer’s catalogue for details and guidance. Values show approx weight and diameter of typical cables.

To calculate the cable capacity, make sure that the total cable area is less than 50% of the cable laying area of the cable tray (according to NEC Section 392.22) and total cable weight does not exceeding the cable tray load capacity.
