How to Make Your Film Tell Its Story Well

Sunday, July 27 Time: 12:30 – 2:00 pm Presenter: Dr. Desiree Garcia, Assistant Professor, Film and Media Studies Program, Arizona State University

Storytelling is a developed art. Most people think of it in terms of an experienced person who creates and shares a story, or series of stories, with a live audience. With film, there is no opportunity for “reciprocity with the audience” and to adjust one’s story as one “reads” the audience’s reaction. Learn the essentials of good storytelling in this session. Several filmmakers are expected to be co-presenters.

This year save your ticket stub from a 2014 Film Festival screening; this is your admission into PFF’s EIGHT amazing workshops!

All workshops are held in Bldg. 15, Room 209, accessed by walking around the north side of the YC Performing Arts Center. Just follow the signs. First-come, first-served. Space is limited. Each workshop provides plenty of time for Q&A with our presenters.

Inside the Astonishing, Newfangled, Trailblazing Adventure, A Person Known To Me! Friday, July 25 Time: 2:00 – 3:00 pm Presenters: Filmmakers Stephanie Argy and Alec Boehm

Catch a glimpse into their new project – a ground-breaking, multi-part compendium of movies, illustrations and the written word, which is being created in installments all over the United States – including in Yavapai County last December! THRILL to tales of your friends and neighbors as they raise rabble on Jerome’s streets! (On Saturday at 3:30 pm, come see a sneak preview of part of the Arizona chapter (Parcel No. 7), shown right before Mark Rydell's The Cowboys! Plus their film, A Person Known to Me – Parcel No. 5: ‘A Thrilling Existence’, is a Festival Official Selection and shows Thursday at 12:30 pm.)

Screenwriting Part I: Breaking In

Friday, July 25 Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm Presenter: Filmmaker Philip Sedgwick Sponsored by Movie Magic Screenwriter

Last year, Philip’s screenwriting workshop was the talk of the Festival, so we invited him back! For a new screenwriter with a script to shop, the industry seems slanted against their every effort. What’s a newbie to do? In this workshop, Philip will trace a series of options available to beginning scribes to help kick open a few of the doors that seem closed. Be ready to take notes. We’ll discuss contests, script consultants, social media, e-mail blast services and many other tools.

Workshop participants will be able to sign up to receive FREE screenwriting-related software, courtesy of Write Brothers Software (screenplay.com).

Screenwriting Part II: Make ‘Em Ache, Make ‘Em Heal

Saturday, July 26 Time: 2:15 – 3:15 pm Presenter: Filmmaker Philip Sedgwick Sponsored by Movie Magic Screenwriter

There’s nothing that will make a butt in a theater seat ache faster than a character that fails to arouse a viewer’s immediate interest. In this session, Philip will discuss methods for creating fascinating characters that will stay in the memory of the audience long after the film ends. He will define character flaws, developing character arcs, and the use of irony. Based upon character archetypes, Philip will discuss how to create characters that engage the plot and are inspired to take on all challenges at all costs, and in so doing, capture the attention and minds of viewers. Workshop participants will be able to sign up to receive FREE screenwriting-related software, courtesy of Write Brothers Software (screenplay.com).

High School Shorts

Page 12

Arizona High School Film Competition

Our PFF is out there in front again. In February 2014, PFF launched this competition to encourage young filmmakers to “test the waters” for their films amongst their peers. These young filmmakers have been housed on campus during the Festival to get a “taste of college campus life” as a step toward encouraging them to go onto college.

They have been busy circulating amongst our visiting seasoned filmmakers and watching and critiquing as many of the Festival films as possible. This is a learning opportunity PFF wants to encourage and we hope to repeat this competition in 2015. See "High School Shorts" for the film titles and descriptions.

Come see what Arizona’s young filmmakers are producing – it’s exciting! These films will screen Sunday, July 27 at 10:00 am in the SNW theater.

Jeff Wood, Film Instructor at Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood is serving as the program’s coordinator.

Dr. Desiree Garcia, Assistant Professor, Film and Media Studies Program, Arizona State University will introduce these films, setting a context in which to view them. She’ll also lead a post-film discussion with these high school filmmakers during which you can ask your questions (and applaud their results).

As part of this program a workshop, “How to Make Your Film Tell Its Story Well” presented by Dr. Garcia, is scheduled for Sunday, July 27 from 12:30-1:30 pm in Bldg. 15, Rm 209. Anyone interested in learning how to craft their story better is encouraged to attend.

The American Nurse As the U.S. population grows, ages and faces deteriorating health, nurses serve on the healthcare frontlines. Photojournalist/filmmaker Carolyn Jones survived breast cancer with a nurse’s help, so as a tribute to our 3.2 million nurses, she published a book chronicling 75 nurses' stories. The film breaks through our misconceptions about nursing following five nurses and their patients: Tonia, maximum-security prison inmates; Jason, Appalachian home health patients; Brian, returning soldiers; Naomi, birthing mother; and Sister Stephen, nursing home patients at life’s end.

In a blend of exquisite nature documentary and character-driven narrative, the majestic wild horses of the American West are revealed in stereoscopic 3D as never before. A girl's eye pulls us into a drama unfolding still on hundreds of millions of acres of public land. The battle lines have long been carved into the landscape, and the players are deeply entrenched. The intricate dance between a man and a wild horse presents lessons for us all including the battle-hardened special interest groups fighting over the place of the American Mustang.

When his ranch hands join a gold rush, rancher Wil Andersen (John Wayne) is forced to find replacement drovers for his yearly 400-mile cattle drive. He rides into deserted Bozeman, MT where it is suggested that he use local schoolboys. The next morning, a group of schoolboys shows up to volunteer. This film reveals how Edward Abbey's anarchistic spirit and riotous novels influenced and helped guide the nascent environmental movement of the seventies and eighties. Through interviews, archival footage and reenactments, this documentary captures the outrage of Abbey's friends who were the original eco-warriors. In defense of wilderness, these early activists pioneered monkey wrenching, a radical blueprint for wrenching the system. This film has played to sold-out audiences whenever it is screened.
