“we seek to improve and elevate the character of mankind”
Office of the
Sovereign Grand Master Independent Order of Odd Fellows
Greetings, Brothers and Sisters, Well under normal conditions we would
have held The Sovereign Grand Lodge Sessions, however, due to the circumstances we will have to wait till 2021 and hope that we can come together at that time in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I came upon this story the other day and I
would like to share it with you! THE WISE OLD MAN A man of 92 years, short, very well-
presented, who takes great care in his appearance, is moving into an old people’s home today. His wife of 70 years has recently died, and he is obliged to leave his home. After waiting several hours in the retirement home lobby, he is told that his room is ready.
As he slowly walks to the elevator, using his cane, the nurse describes his small room to him, including the sheet hung at the window which serves as a curtain. “I like it very much”, he says, with the enthusiasm of an 8-year-old boy who has just been given a new puppy.
Surprised, the nurse says “Sir, you haven’t even seen the room yet, hang on a moment, we are almost there.”
“That has nothing to do with it”, he replies. “Happiness is something I choose in advance. Whether or not I like the room does not depend on the furniture, or the décor – rather it depends on how I decide to see it.” He continued. “It is already decided in my mind that I like my room. It is a decision I make
every morning when I wake up.” “I can choose. I can spend my day in bed
enumerating all the difficulties that I have with the parts of my body that no longer work very well, or I can get up and give thanks to heaven for those parts that are still in working order.” He explained. “Every day is a gift, and as long as I can open my eyes, I will focus on the new day and the happy memories that I have built up during my life.”
“Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw in later life what you have deposited along the way.”
“My advice is to deposit all the happiness you can in your bank account of memories….and you’ll stay happy no matter what!”
At this time in our life we need to
concentrate on the happiness that we have experienced throughout our life. Our Future is now, so remember to Motivate, treat everyone with respect, dignity and kindness. Be Optimistic, Be Positive, and above all Stay Safe.
As we go forward during this Pandemic, we must adapt so we can move forward. Our Jurisdictions are gradually opening and now it is time to start thinking about our lodges!
Some Lodges have kept in touch with their members by holding social meetings via zoom, etc. Some Lodges are starting to have meetings. If your State/Province permits meetings, be sure to follow all the guidelines that your Government Officials and the Healthcare Advisors allow, such as social distancing, face masks, etc. Remember if you

Office of the President
International Association of
Rebekah Assemblies I.O.O.F.
Dear, dear Sisters and Brothers:
In a normal year, we would now have returned from our annual I.A.R.A. session and would be enjoying memories of time and conversation shared with long-time and new friends. Your newly installed president would have shared her vision and goals for the year at session and this article would further publicize these to our membership. Your newly installed officers would be planning their travel to join members at upcoming events and Assembly sessions.
A normal year? That’s certainly not 2020! So, let’s review the theme that I shared for
this term, now lengthened to two years due to the pandemic: Focus on What’s Important. Always relevant, it continues to be especially applicable to these days that have little connection to pre-pandemic normalcy. The items that we consider to be important may have changed but the need to focus continues.
Many activities are now done solo. What
can only one person do when the needs of our communities are so large?
One person can make a difference in the
lives of so many others. One person can call someone unable to
leave home. One person – appropriately masked and gloved – can pick up trash blowing around the park or the neighborhood. One person can donate a book or some bottles of water to the local school.
One person can purge the closet or clothing
drawers and donate the excessed items to a
homeless shelter or other charity. One person can weed a neighbor’s flower bed. One person can shop for another’s groceries or run an errand for a neighbor.
One person can volunteer to deliver meals
to shut-ins. One person can fill the bird feeder outside a shut-in’s window. One person can knit or crochet caps for newborns. One person can photograph and share the beauty in our world.
One person can donate blood. One person
can donate to a food pantry. One person can drive a neighbor or friend
to a medical appointment. One person can email a friend to say “I miss you” or “I thought of you today and wanted you to know it!” One person can smile and say “Good morning!” or “Hello!” or “I like your …” to people encountered along the way.
One person can be the point of light in
another’s darkness. One person can bring color to the path that another travels. Focus on what’s important – be the one! Fraternally with focus, s/ Elizabeth Mowry-Harbstreit

Office of the General Commanding
General Military Council, Patriarchs Militant
Dear Chevaliers, Ladies, Brothers and Sisters, Greetings, I hope and pray that this communication finds all of you well and staying safe from everything going on in the world. Stay Safe and Strong! Happy people don't go through life collecting and seeking recognition. They go through the life giving it away!
Let Yourself Rest If you’re exhausted, Rest. If you don’t feel like starting a new project, Don’t. If you don’t feel the urge to make something new, just rest in the beauty of the old, the familiar, the known. If you don’t feel like talking, stay silent.
If your fed up with the news, Turn it off. If you want to postpone something until tomorrow, do it. If you want to do nothing, let yourself do nothing today. Feel the fullness of the emptiness, the vastness if silence, the sheer life in your unproductive moments. Time does not always need to be filled. You are enough, simply with yourself. With not having session the Secretary packets will be mailed to you, with all the reports and info your jurisdiction needs to do business. If you are in need of anything, please reach out to any officer and we will do what we can to help you in any manner.

Greetings Chevaliers, Ladies, and Brothers and Sisters:
I hope you have had a happy and pleasant summer. In spite of the many inconveniences, it was a time when families could slow down and reconnect. Communications have been via telephone, email, and in new terms – ZOOM and Virtual teleconferencing. Some Cantons are meeting and holding sessions. I am glad this is being done. However, if there are doubts for safety, please do what is best for your Canton.
I was able to attend a 4th of July celebration with my family. We sent my oldest grand daughter to Seton Hill in Greensburg, PA. The Labor Day holiday is upon us and
then Veterans Day. Please be safe and cautious, but have a good time as well.
The Department Council of Pennsylvania mustered a new Canton in July. They mustered ten new members and transferred three members who are now closer to their meetings. Congratulations to them!
I want to let the members of California know they are in our prayers because of the fires within their jurisdiction. Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and the other Midwest States also had their problems this year with a drought then flooding. Many states have had tornadoes. The Atlantic Coast was hit by hurricanes. Louisiana and Texas were hit with two hurricanes within days of each other.

Everywhere there is the Covid virus. But we persevere. We must help and pray for each other during these trying times.
Hopefully, in the upcoming year we will be able to get back to some type of normalcy. We missed our session, but everything goes on. Once restrictions are lifted, we will be setting up visitations. We will be contacting the Department Adjutants for help in setting these up since there may be changes in scheduling, and we will be contacting departments with plans for the future.
God bless you all; and stay safe! Chivalrously, General John C. (Jack) Roberts General Commanding

have a meeting, because of social distancing, you will not be able to take up passwords. For the time being your Financial Secretary can report that “All Members are in good standing”. He/she is the one that knows if your dues are paid. These are still uncertain times and I encourage you to use caution. Please keep in touch with your members especially if they do not feel comfortable about being out among people.
We have had several inquiries regarding paying of dues. Our Executive discussed this at our last executive meeting via zoom. While we realize that lodges have been dark for a while the bills did not stop coming. You still must pay them in your lodge. Your Grand Lodges also must pay their bills. The Sovereign Grand Lodge also has commitments that must be paid such as our office bills, and our commitments to the IARA, General Military Council and IALAPM so they can meet their requirements. Hopefully, we will get back to a regular way of life soon!
I have been told that some Lodges, Jurisdictions and Members have been involved within their communities doing what we as Odd Fellows and Rebekahs need to do. If you have someone or a lodge who is “Stepping Up To The Plate” by making a difference, I would like to know about it. Just send me an email at [email protected]
Also, as we start to get active again please remember that all projects of our Order have been active throughout this pandemic. Visual Research, Pilgrimage for Youth, Educational Foundation, Living Legacy, Arthritis
Foundation and Society, Hunger and Disaster Fund, SOS Children’s Village, and our Rose Parade Float. Please continue to donate to them. While the Rose Parade has been cancelled this year, our float is built and still needs to be paid for, so they can start the new year out without a big deficit.
I would like to commend the Educational Foundation for their hard work in selecting this year’s recipients for the scholarships awarded. Thank you for including me in on your zoom meeting, it was most informative.
We just received notice on the News that our boarder is remaining closed until September 21st and will be reviewed at that time. Our Executive will be holding another meeting at the beginning of November to plan for spring travels, that is if we will be able to at that time. We will keep you posted. “OUR FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS: STEP UP TO THE PLATE” Above all please stay safe. Fraternally, s/ E. Extra Innings—12 to go: Step up to the Plate—
As we continue the 2019-2020 program into the 2020-2021 term: Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
Have you taken a good look at what Sovereign Grand Master Wes Nelson is asking us to do? He is asking us to “Step Up To The Plate”. He is using the home plate for a baseball game as our visual aide. Using this scenario let us think for just a few minutes about a baseball game. You have a head coach, assistant coaches, and players. Now let us apply this to our Order. The Sovereign Grand Master would be considered the head coach and the rest of the Executive would be the assistant coaches and we the members are the players. In baseball the head coach and assistant coaches alone can’t win games, it takes the entire team working together for the win. The same is true for us as Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. Membership isn’t just the responsibility of the Sovereign Grand Master, the Executive or even the Membership Committee. Membership is the responsibility of each and every member.
We have to begin to look at every opportunity to invite people into our Order. If you haven’t already done so I encourage each of you to take a look at the July August 2020 edition of the I.O.O.F News and look at pages 8 thru 15 titled “Is your Lodge ‘Hum Drum?’ ” And don’t just read it, take some time, answer the questions and then reflect on your answers. Is your Lodge actively involved in the community? Other than the order of business, what happens in your Lodge meetings? Has a member stopped attending or dropped out? Why did they stop coming? These are all important questions we should be asking ourselves and not just asking but honestly answering and doing something with the answers. These are just a few of the questions but there are many more questions as a Lodge and as individual members we should be asking.
Now is the time for our Lodges to “step up to the plate”, be the players and have serious discussions as to where we see ourselves in the future. Start now to develop a plan for your Lodge. Realizing that many of the Lodges still aren’t meeting some of this may be difficult to accomplish at the present time but there will be a time when Lodge doors will again be open and, in the meantime, there is technology available for holding group discussions to set your goals for when your doors are open. Have someone set up a Zoom meeting with those in your Lodge. For those who don’t have internet or even a computer Zoom has the ability for an individual to also call in. This is a great way to not only get the discussions going and getting your plans ready for when you can once again meet it is also an opportunity to check in and catch up with your Brothers and Sisters and keep them interested in our beloved Order while not meeting.
Remember it is important to have new
members, but it is just as important to retain the membership your Lodge currently has. As always, The Sovereign Grand Lodge Executive and Membership Committee are available to assist in helping you develop a plan of action for your Lodge. The important thing to always remember is: “DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK”. We are in the 7th inning stretch and with all of us working together we will win!
In Friendship, Love and Truth, Committee on Membership
The future is in Your Hands—Step up to
the Plate!

To my wonderful Family and Friends:
May you feel safe. May you feel loved. May you have hope knowing that better
days are coming. Remember our members that haven’t gotten out in the last few months by giving them a call or even sending them a card, a Friendly voice or message would go a long way.
Chivalrously, Lady Jami Rafter President IALAPM
Let’s Make TODAY one step closer to a strong
future.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows
Membership Committee “A program of The Sovereign Grand Lodge and the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies to Obtain Membership Gains in all Units of all Branches of the Family of Odd Fellowship”
September 2020
Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
I hope this message finds you and yours well, staying healthy and safe, wearing your mask in public, washing your hands often, avoiding crowds and staying home. Continue to practice kindness, patience, respect and love those close to us and before you know it, we will have fully adapted to the new normal. Rebooting our minds to adapt to the “new normal” should be given serious consideration, most will be accepting while others will be more defiant. Nevertheless, change is inevitable.
The 2019 – 2020 year came and went without much fanfare. Most Lodges went dark,
temporarily discontinued Lodge social events and postponed service projects. This put a damper on all planned membership recruiting efforts at all levels. Without much to show for this year, the committee will embark on a membership push to help our local Lodges grow membership.
With the committee assembled, we will start identifying Lodges that have seen
membership growth and creative recruiting programs with a fair amount of success. Following this phase, we will organize a membership symposium, including successful Lodge leaders to assist in implementing a standardized membership recruitment program utilizing some of our shared successes. Communicating the enhanced recruitment program will be our greatest challenge, but we are optimistic that it will assist Lodges that need our help.
Again, this year was uneventful and there really isn’t much to report but we are hopeful
that we will all be able to move forward, with or without COID-19 in our midst. If anyone is willing to help our committee with expertise in public relations, media relations, graphic design, creative ideas or general marketing, please contact me. My information is listed below.
Lastly, I want to thank and welcome Mario Guzman to the Membership Committee
and look forward to working with him as we reorganize and rebuild Lodges membership. Fraternally submitted in Friendship, Love and Truth, Steven Tseu Membership Chairman

September 2020 Greetings to all Odd Fellows and Rebekahs,
It is once again time to start the selection process for delegates that will be attending the 73rd Pilgrimage for Youth Tour. The tour dates are July 3-July 16 and begin and end in Philadelphia. The cost for this year’s tour is the same as last year, $2,000.00.
Due to the covid-19 virus our tour for this year had to be cancelled. There were 102 delegates
that were sponsored for the 2020 tour. Our Board of Directors graciously extended an invitation to those delegates to attend this year’s tour. Sixty-four of those delegates have indicated that they will take part in the 2021 tour!
Our future is our youth. The vision statement on the opening page of our website says:
Gateway to the Future Standing on the Foundation of the Past. This program epitomizes the very fabric of our Order in promoting friendship, love and truth. The future of our Order depends on our youth. The best recruitment tool we have is right in front of us: The Pilgrimage for Youth Program. Please be a part of our future growth and promote and sponsor a delegate!!
Our world is so full of divisiveness and discontent and desperately need avenues to bring us
together to discuss world issues that people tend to have different perspectives on. The Pilgrimage gives students of different backgrounds and cultures a forum to discuss and research such topics as healthcare, climate change, homelessness, food and water insecurity, education and other topics which impact our global society.
The deadline for the first half payment has been extended to January 1, 2021 for this year due
to the late start of most school districts. We hope that the added time will give you more flexibility in the process of choosing your delegates. The Board has also increased the scholarship from $1,000.00 for first place in the speech contest to $2,000.00. Second place has increased from $500.00 to $1,000.00. Thank you in advance for your support. Our future depends on you!! Sincerely and Fraternally, s/ Leonard Bolton Executive Director
