Let the light of Christ shine through you to others.
Dear Parents, friends and students of the Our Lady of The Cape school
community,
Confirmation
Thank you to all involved in our Confirmation celebration in the Parish
Church on Saturday evening. Well done to all the parents, sponsors and
prayer buddies that attended to support the candidates on this important
step in their faith development. Thank you to Mr. Nick Jones and Mrs. Amie
Meyer on the excellent preparation of the students from our school.
2020 Composite Class:
Next year there is a strong chance that we will be having a year one/two
composite class. Some parents have no concerns, some parents have
huge concerns. In every class, in every school that I have taught in over
the years there is an academic and social and emotional range from
twelve months to seven years difference. Our teachers are trained to
cope with this huge range of abilities in every class. If you have any
concerns with the possibility of your child being in a composite class in
year One or Two in 2020, please come along to a meeting with Mr Lee in
the library next Wednesday 6 November at 2.30pm in the Library.
Grandparents Day:
I had never witnessed a Grandparent’s day
before Monday. I was certainly blown away by
the huge number of grandparents that attended
for the brief prayer session, morning tea and
casual walk through the classrooms. It was great
to see everyone here and the rich interaction
between the grandparents and students. Thank
you to Mrs. Amie Meyer for co-ordinating the
morning and Mrs. Sara Drmota for coordinating the morning tea.

Week 1, February 5, 2014
Our Lady of the Cape Primary School is a community where each child is
valued as an individual and nurtured spiritually, by many hearts working
together as one voice to fulfil their overall potential.
Many Hearts, One Voice
31 October 2019
World teachers Day:
All staff appreciated the delicious morning tea provided for the staff on
World teacher’s day last Friday. Thank you to P&F for making the staff feel
valued.
Whale Visit:
We have a mosaic of a whale on display in our undercover area. The whale is constructed out of
waste collected from Meelup Beach during July. We have the display for two weeks to help reinforce
the negative impact that littering has on our community.
Dogs on School Grounds:
Unfortunately, a number of our students have allergies to dog hair. When we
have dogs on school grounds it triggers the allergies with some fairly severe
consequences in some cases. Please leave your pooches tied up on the
perimeter of the school grounds if you all walk to school as a family.
OLC Talent:
Mrs. Nimmo is co-ordinating the OLC Has Talent. The senior students are preparing for their auditions
over the next few weeks in the lead up to the performance Monday November 25.
Talented Students:
A number of our students have been performing to exceptional levels outside the area of the
classroom. Kade Martin in year 5 participated in the world Rip Curl Gromsearch World Competition
in Medewi Beach in Bali. Congratulations to Kade who achieved third place, competing against
students from all around the world. Congratulations to Isabella and Cooper Bidesi for both competing
in the State Athletics Championships in Perth on the weekend. Cooper won the bronze medal in year
4 javelin and Isabella the bronze in state 800m (After winning a silver medal in the state Surf Lifesaving
Championships earlier in the day!)
Socktober Fundraiser:
As part of mission month, we are holding our gold coin donation to wear silly
socks on Friday. All proceeds go to those a lot less fortunate than us.
Assembly:
This week’s assembly commences at 2:10pm. Year 2M will be performing. We also have the
Confirmation candidates to receive their certificates. The lions club will be presenting an award to
the winner of the Peace Poster competition along with our usual class awards.
A big thank you to Freedom Garvey-Warr for generously donating her time
and producing wonderful photos for school promotional publishing. We are
so fortunate to have this sort of expertise in our school community.
Watching junior students and toddlers gaining such joy whilst
jumping in puddles!
Watching our students welcome others into their games
GOD
MOMENTs
Did You Know
After a chat in RE about the many ways we can use our hands, Coco V said she knows how
to plunge a toilet!
We will be having Fire Drills at school on November 13 and 26. The one on the 26th will involve
exiting all the students from school after 2.30pm. More information will follow.
The shade sails were put up on the weekend.
Jay (2) said it is a great idea to have a capital H in help as people usually yell it out!
An ostrich’s eye is bigger than it’s brain.
Darcy (PP), was having a lengthy drink after a rather hectic recess on Tuesday.
There will be a busy Bee for Kindy, PP and Year One parents on Saturday 9 November from 9-
11am.
Zara (5), likes to go surfing with her dad.
Finn R (6), was munching on a carrot at 11.34am on Tuesday morning. Finn is also excellent at
picking up lizards.
Zoe (1), is left-handed.
Jax (1) knows that there is one lot of ten in fifteen.
The PP class were learning to count by 2 and 5 on Tuesday.
There was slight confusion between Trick and Treating and Chicken Treating in PP.
Three very generous families have donated a ‘Hungry Bin’ worm farm, chook tractor and now
a Land Rover for the junior primary playground. Legends!
Principal
Dear Parents,
Unless you have a direct debit or other arrangement in place, please ensure
your fees for the year are paid as soon as possible.
Thank you for your support.
Wheelie, Walkie, Waste-Free Wednesdays
What an amazing response we have had so far! Thank you to all
parents for supporting our Wednesdays. We’ve had a huge turn out
of bikers and walkers, and the majority of students that have been
waste-free in their lunch boxes.
If you don’t know what Wednesdays are about, here is a little spiel:
“Students, staff and families from Our Lady of the Cape primary
school partnered with the City of Busselton to embrace “Walking
Wheeling Waste Free Wednesdays” during October and November. The initiative is designed to
encourage students and their families to walk and cycle part of, or all the way to school, embracing
physical activity as part of everyday behaviour. As an added bonus, traffic congestion around the
school zone is reduced, and participants are welcomed with a healthy fruit breakfast when they
arrive at school.”
The numbers for which class will win a paid excursion by City of Busselton are tight, so keep up the
great approach over the next two Wednesdays.
Wellbeing Focus at OLC
Along with analysing the student data we have from the student wellbeing surveys we conducted at
the end of last term, the OLC staff yesterday participated in a wellbeing professional learning session
conducted by Laura Allison, head of the psychology team at CEWA.
The session concluded at 6pm and included latest data, research and strategies in assisting our
students and ourselves as adults to rethink and understand more deeply about our approaches that
promote wellbeing.
The session was well received by the staff and Laura was an amazing presenter that will hopefully
form a partnership with the school as we continue with our strategic focus on the wellbeing of staff
and students over the next 3 years.
Little Seedlings Term 4 week 1
Intentional learning: An introduction to Aboriginal Culture
Wow, what an enriching morning we had at Little Seedlings in Week One,
learning about native Australian culture. I wanted to ensure that I brought
the richness of Indigenous culture into a contemporary setting with
sensitivity and respect. We explored traditional dot painting, leaf threading
using native bush foliage, we made spiky echidna friends and read an
Aboriginal tale about “How the birds got their colours.” We listened to
“Inanay Capuana” a beautiful lullaby sung in Aboriginal language and
used tapping sticks to create a soulful rhythm. During that time on the mat
when we all sat together, immersed in our singing, tapping, movements
and rhythms... There was a definite God moment! We moved beyond
education, we moved beyond language, we moved beyond barriers ... we
had moved beyond age and diversity and were simply connected by a
boundless sense of being.

Term Four has started beautifully with the children returning from holidays relaxed, refreshed and
ready for their term of learning ahead. They have many wonderful stories to share ranging from big
holidays to staying at home and enjoying some quality family time. In the very busy world that our
children live in, the later … staying at home and having quality family time... is becoming difficult to
achieve. So well done parents who can make this happen. Your children will remember exploring
the garden, cooking with mum, working in the shed with dad, making a car out of a cardboard box
and playing board games with a smile.
Every year the Early Childhood team reflect on their teaching practice in order to ensure that we, as
a team, guide your child’s learning in the best possible way. We developed our Early Childhood
Philosophy a few years ago and this too, will be reviewed. We recognise parents as the first educators
of their children and we would like you to take the time to read this philosophy. If you have any
thoughts then please write them down, place them in an envelope and address them to Julie Birch
before the end of Week 4. Your input will be considered when we review this document along with
current theory and advocated best practice.
Early Childhood Philosophy
Our Early Childhood Centre aims to foster children's learning through acknowledging and
encouraging each individual’s characteristics of belonging, being and becoming in a safe, happy,
inviting environment that balances a play-based learning programme with essential explicit teaching
in key learning areas allowing our students to be the children that God intended them to be.
We believe that strong collaborative relationships between a child's family, culture, educators,
professionals and the community will empower a child to co-construct and further develop his or her
own identity, voice and understanding of the world.
Learning and developmental outcomes will aim to foster children to:
Have a strong sense of identity
Be connected with and contribute to their world
Have a strong sense of wellbeing
Be confident and involved learners
Be effective communicators
We believe that play is an integral part of the Early Childhood setting. The children will engage in
both teacher directed play and free play to explore their world and make sense of new concepts
and ideas.
The curriculum is directed by the Australian Curriculum (SCSA) which directs ‘what’ we teach and the
Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) which guides as to ‘how’ to plan developmentally appropriate
learning experiences.
At Our Lady of the Cape Primary School the children’s literacy development is supported by the
implementation of effective and evidence based literacy programmes. These provide a strong
foundation for the development of oral language and phonemic awareness which are essential to
both reading and writing. Differentiated small group and individualised explicit instruction occurs on
a daily basis before immersing children in play experiences that allow them to explore and
consolidate their new learning. Relevant and appropriate literature is used to enrich literacy learning
and enhance meaningful engagement.
In a similar fashion, numeracy skills are taught sequentially through both explicit instruction and playful
‘hands-on’ learning. We believe a strong foundation to numeracy is provided through informed
teaching, engaging learning experiences and the modelling of a positive attitude towards
mathematics.
The learning environment and planning is driven by the children’s needs and interests and allows for
the differing developmental stages of individuals.
We believe in fostering independence, confidence and a sense of self by providing an inclusive,
supportive and nurturing classroom environment in which students feel safe to take risks with their
learning and therefore, to foster a life time love for learning.
A reminder to all parents to keep the communication lines open with your class teachers. If something
is happening in your child’s life that may impact on their ability to concentrate and be happy at
school it is really important that their teacher is aware and can help them through tricky times.
Many thanks for your ongoing support,
Julie Birch
Early Childhood Coordinator.
PRAYERS FOR MR. HOGAN AND A HEALING MASS
As you are aware from our last newsletter, our
groundsman Mr. John Hogan has recently been
diagnosed with cancer and has commenced radiation
therapy. We would ask that you keep John and his family
in your prayers at this time and join with us at the Church
next Friday 8th November at 9.30am, where we will offer
a healing mass for Mr. Hogan. We’d love to see you
there.
MINI VINNIES
From next week a number of Year 6 students will assist
Mrs. Derickx as “Mini Vinnies” or youth representatives of the St. Vincent De Paul Society. They will
help to clean the church weekly for four weeks for the month of November. Thank you to Mrs. Derickx
for organising and supervising this with the Year 6’s as part of their service learning.
SOCKTOBER
Tomorrow we will hold a “Crazy Socks Day” and a “Rock Your
Socks Off” dance party at lunchtime for a gold coin
donation. This is a fundraiser for Catholic Mission to assist
children in poverty. This fundraiser is undertaken by all of the
166 Catholic schools in Western Australia during the month of
October, which results in a substantial amount raised for the
less privileged.
Thank you to everyone who can support this cause.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
Monday the 11th of November is Remembrance Day and a service will be held in the hall at 10.45am
led by the Year 5 students. Parents and Grandparents are more than welcome to attend.
CONFIRMATION 2019: CONGRATULATIONS CADIDATES AND PRAYER BUDDIES!

A big Thank-you from myself, Tiare and Ari (and the
ocean !) to the families who were able to help.
Stay tuned for the next one at the end of November.
Don’t forget to visit the amazing whale art piece made
from micro plastics and rope found at Meelup Beach .
Plus to have a read and look at the information hanging
around it in the undercover area to promote having
clean land, beaches and finally Oceans.
The Whale and some photos are courtesy of Cochella
