LES S ONS 3 1– 3 4

Review all memory verses in this unit. Know where each is found and what the verse means.

LESSON 31

1. Why does 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20, tells us we do not belong to ourselves?

Because our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Our bodies

were given to us by God. We were bought with a high price.

2. How should we treat our bodies since they are the temple of the Holy Spirit?

We should honor God with our bodies. This means we must treat our bodies in a way

that will make us healthy—a place fit for the Holy Spirit to live.

3. What does self-control mean?

It means taking time to think about what we are doing and making good choices even

if they are not always what we would like to do.

4. Where does one get the help needed to have self-control and make good choices?

Help comes from God. We need to ask Him every day to help us. Sometimes we

need friends and others to help us too.

5. Why is clear thinking necessary to self-control?

Answers will vary but should include the idea that we cannot make right decisions if

our thinking is muddled. If we do not make right decisions, we are not controlling

ourselves.

LESSON 32

1. According to Proverbs 16:32, what is better than being powerful, and what is better than

conquering a city?

Being patient is better than being powerful, and having self-control is better than

conquering a city.

2. How did Moses’ mother, Jochebed, show self-control in hiding Moses?

It was very difficult for Jochebed to put her tiny baby in a basket and place him in the

river, but she was able with God’s help to make the right choice.

3. How did Miriam, Moses’ sister, show self-control?

Miriam stayed by the river and watched the basket holding the baby. She did not

leave, and she did not fall asleep.

4. From the narrative, give two texts that show the positive power of the tongue. Write the

texts in your own words.

Tongue: Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath.”

Proverbs 17:27: “A truly wise person uses few words; a person with

understanding is even-tempered.”

Proverbs 15:23: “Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say

the right at the right!”

5. From the narrative, give two texts that show the ability to control anger. Write the texts in

your own words.

Anger: Proverbs 14:29: “Those who control their anger have great

understanding; those with a hasty temper will make mistakes.”

Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words

stir up anger.”

Proverbs 19:11: “People with good sense restrain their anger; they

earn esteem by overlooking wrongs.”

LESSON 33

1. Explain what Paul means in Galatians 2:20. Answers will vary but should reflect the idea that we no longer do what we want but

that we allow God to direct our lives. It is as if our desires that are out of harmony with God’s will are dead.

2. What happened right after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist that encouraged Him

before He was led into the wilderness? The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descended on Jesus, and the voice of God the Father said, “This is My beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with Him!”

3. Who surrounded Jesus in the wilderness? The forces of good were angels from heaven, the Holy Spirit, etc.; the forces of evil

were Satan and his angels.

4. Who led Jesus into the wilderness? Why was it important for Jesus to spend this time in

the wilderness? The Holy Spirit. This was the time Jesus prayed for the strength, wisdom, and help He would need to do His work on earth. It was a time of preparation for what would come.

5. How long did Jesus spend in the wilderness? Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness.

6. Why did Satan think he could win his battle with Jesus at this time when he had lost the

battle in heaven? In heaven Jesus was all powerful. Now He had taken on human form and was weak

from not eating for forty days. Satan appeared to be more powerful than Jesus, and he misled himself into thinking he could persuade Jesus to sin.

7. Although at the end of forty days, Satan appeared to Jesus as a mighty angel, how did

Satan immediately demonstrate that he was not a good angel sent by God? The first words he spoke were “If you are the Son of God . . .” Only Satan or an evil angel would have had said “if,” thereby questioning that Jesus was God’s Son.

8. List the three temptations Satan presented to Jesus.

First, Satan tempted Jesus to change the stones into bread to prove that He was

God’s Son.

Next, Satan tempted Jesus to jump from the top of the temple in Jerusalem to

demonstrate His power.

Third, Satan offered to give the world to Jesus if He would bow down and worship him.

9. When Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread, Jesus quoted a text that said,

“People can’t live only on food; they must feed on every word God says.” What does it

mean to “feed on every word God says”? It means to read God’s word, the Bible, and think about what it tells us about God and the way we are to live our lives.

10. How was Jesus fed and strengthened after Satan left Him?

Angels were sent to bring Him food and strengthen Him.

LESSON 34

1. According to Proverbs 29:11, what is the difference between a fool and a wise person?

A fool give full vent to his anger, but a wise person holds it back.

2. In what way did Rosa Parks become part of history?

She was jailed for refusing to give up her bus seat to a White man. This was

important in beginning the Civil Rights Movement. In reaction to this incident, Martin

Luther King became a leader in the movement.

3. How did the Black people in Montgomery, Alabama, react to Rosa Parks being arrested?

They boycotted the buses by walking and starting car pools to provide transportation.

4. In what way did the Black people in Montgomery show self-control?

The people showed their anger in peaceful, nonviolent ways and did not riot or harm

others.

5. For what speech is Martin Luther King famous? Where was the speech given?

He is best remembered for his “I Have a Dream” speech, which was given at the

Lincoln Memorial.

6. Why was the Lincoln Memorial a good place to give the “I Have a Dream” speech and

hold a rally for civil rights?

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves.

7. What was Martin Luther King’s dream?

His dream was that the day would come when all God’s children—all colors, all

nationalities and all religions—would be able to join hands and sing the words of the

old Negro spiritual: “Free at last. Free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at

last.”

8. Why didn’t the Civil Rights Act signed by President Johnson on July 2, 1964, stop all

discrimination by those in favor of segregation?

Signing a bill does not change people’s hearts. Some people did not use the self-

control needed to obey the law.

9. Who is recognized as the leader of the Civil Rights Movement?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

10. Although Martin Luther King, Jr. preached love and forgiveness, his enemies hated him.

How did they show this hatred?

King was assassinated, thus becoming a martyr.

greater miracle—the healing of the woman or the fact that she could forgive those who

killed her husband and son and wounded her? Why?

Answers will vary.

3. When one of the men hit him with a machete, Pastor Sefuku was following Jesus’

LESSON 36

1. In the memory verse, 1 John 3:18, 19, John tell us to stop just saying we love each other.

What does he say we should do instead?

John says we should show our love by our actions.

2. This lesson is a parable. Who told the parable? Why did He tell it? What did the younger

brother ask for? What did the older brother do? (Luke 15:11–32)

Jesus told the parable to teach the Pharisees how God feels about sinners.

The younger brother asked for his inheritance, and the older brother stayed home to

work with his father.

3. What did the younger brother have to do to earn his Father’s love?

Nothing. His Father loved him all the time he was gone, was watching for him, and

was longing for him to come home.

4. The Father in the parable represents God. What do we learn about God by studying this

parable?

God always loves us.

God welcomes sinners who repent and want to return to Him. He forgives their sins

and blesses them.

Perhaps not as obvious to students is that as the Father gave the inheritance to the

son and let him go, so God does not force us to love and serve Him.

The Father was patient with the older son and tried to help him see that he was no

less loved than his brother.

5. Which brother needed to repent and ask for forgiveness?

Both brothers sinned.

6. Which brother knew that he needed to ask for forgiveness?

The younger brother.

7. Which brother do you think the Father loved most?

The Father loved them both equally.
