    Solar System

4Identify the planets within the solar system and differentiate planets from planetoids.

Identify the galaxy in which the solar system is located.

Recognize the many characteristics of the Sun

Define satellite and identify the different phases of the Moon.

Students will view presentations of the elements within the Solar System. As a

cooperative learning strategy they will work in team activities in which theirunderstanding is going to be tested.

IMPLEMENTATIONAs the students learned about the Earth, the living things of our planet and the Sun as a

star that emits energy, throughout this lesson they will learn about all others elements

forming the Solar System. The Solar System lesson will be an introduction to theUniverse topic and the galaxies.

Goal: Students will learn the most important facts about the solar system.

    Steps for essential learning:

    1. Preparation

Make a slides projector reservation at the library so it is available at the times of teaching

    the lesson.

Get slides of the Sun, Moon and planets.

Get the DVD The Universe and the Solar System

Prepare a list of homework for the units using the text book as guide.

Plan an educational activity to be used as an informal assessment.Prepare rubric and guidance for homework and activities.

Prepare a presentation outline for students to write notes

    2. Teaching the unit

    Day 1

Using the slide projector, students will view the presentation to learn the characteristics

of Mercury, Venus and the Earth.

Make sure students take notes of key information.

    Day 5

Present the DVD titled: The Universe and the Solar SystemImplement an educational activity in order to review all information presented.

This activity will work as an informal assessment. The students will divide into 2

balanced groups. Teacher will use the slide show to project pictures of planets, moons,

etc. Students will have to identify the picture and provide details about the element inquestion. For each correct answer the team will get a point. At the end of the presentation

the team who gets more point is the winner.

    Day 6

    Groups Presentations

The class will be divided into 4 groups. All unit content will be divided also into 4

    STANDARDS & ASSESSMENT

    FL- Florida Sunshine State Standards

    Subject : Science (2008)

    Grade : Grade: 4

Supporting/ Big Idea : Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time

Humans continue to explore Earth's place in space. Gravity and energy influence the

formation of galaxies, including our own Milky Way Galaxy, stars, the Solar System, and

Earth. Humankind's need to explore continues to lead to the development of knowledgeand understanding of our Solar System.

    Benchmark : SC.4.E.5.3

Recognize that Earth revolves around the Sun in a year and rotates on its axis in a 24-

    hour day.

    Benchmark : SC.4.E.5.2

Describe the changes in the observable shape of the moon over the course of about amonth.

    Benchmark : SC.4.E.5.4

Relate that the rotation of Earth (day and night) and apparent movements of the Sun,Moon, and stars are connected.

    Benchmark : SC.4.E.5.1

Observe that the patterns of stars in the sky stay the same although they appear to shift

across the sky nightly, and different stars can be seen in different seasons.
