Introduction: Today we will learn about the birth of Moses. Moses was born a long time ago in Egypt. But he was not an Egyptian. He was an Israelite. At that time the Pharaoh of Egypt gave an order that every newborn baby boy was to be thrown into the Nile River and killed, but baby girls could live. That doesn't sound fair does it? Can you imagine the sadness parents had when a baby boy was born? But this is a story about how God can protect his own chosen people, even during evil times like this.

Exodus 2:1-10 (The story of the birth of Moses)

Discussion Questions: 1. Instead of throwing Moses into the Nile, what did his mother do with him for the first three months of his life? (She hid him)

2. When his mother could hide him no longer, what did she do with Moses? (She put him in a basket and set him among the reeds in the Nile)

3. Where did Pharaoh's daughter find the baby? (Along the bank of the Nile among the reeds)

4. Do you think Moses was found by accident, or was it God's plan?

5. Who did Pharaoh's daughter find to nurse the baby? (His mother)

6. How do we see God's protection in this story?

We use many things to protect us, like helmets, gloves and heavy coats in the winter. People also protect us from harm, such as firemen and lifeguards. God's protection is always there, even when we don't know it. He has a plan for us just like He did for Moses. Although things may seem difficult at the time, God is always working in us for the good. The Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28). This week, everyone should spend some time in prayer, thanking God for His protection. Remember, our help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

(6:25, 9:40, 11:40 WORSHIP WITH PASTOR JASON – the fifth graders will come and get you. Worship will last about 20 minutes and then you will go back to your classroom to finish the lesson)

Game:

What you will do during class: Have the children form a large circle facing each other. Then blindfold one volunteer to stand in the middle. Everyone standing in the circle will say "Police" (or any other word from the list you accumulated at the beginning of class) over and over in a normal voice (waiting a few seconds between each time they say it). Except secretly pick one child on the circle to say "GOD" over and over. The object is for the blindfolded child in the middle to listen very carefully to hear who is saying "GOD" and either point to or go up to that child. Then that child is blindfolded and goes to the center as you secretly pick another child in the circle to say “GOD” over and over. Continue play as time permits.

What you will say:The world we live in is full noise, distractions and other people that help protect us. All these things can take our minds away from God. When we keep our faith and turn to God, He will be there for us every time. When we look for God and decide to follow Him no matter what, He reveals Himself to us so we can know the way. Just like in our little game, once you turn to God's voice, His voice becomes clearer and clearer. Your relationship with God grows and grows. Although the rest of the world is all around, trying it's best to confuse you, it can't keep you away from God's love and protection.

Craft:Give each child the cut out copies of the basket and baby Moses, and a piece of brown yarn. They can color their basket and then baby, and then lace the yarn through the holes so that they lace two baskets together.  Show the completed one for an example.

Snack:Handout snack for those that want it.

Prayer:Father God, you created the heavens and the earth, and everything belongs to you. Nothing happens except by your will. Your mighty hand keeps me

safe from harm, even when I'm not aware of the dangers around me. Dear Lord, thank you so much for your protection, and help me to live for you according to the special plan you have for my life.
