Math Caterpillar patterns - Use
colorful pompoms to make
caterpillar patterns. Alter-
natively, use the printable
pattern prompts to read
and finish patterns.
Caterpillar eggs - Match
the eggs to the leaf. Use
tongs to add the correct
number of caterpillar eggs
(white or yellow pom-
poms) to the printable leaf
numbers.
Feed the caterpillar -
Cover cardboard tubes
with green paper and turn
them into pretend caterpil-
lars. (Do ahead of time or
let kids make them as a
craft). Roll a number cube
and feed the caterpillar
that many items. You can
use small leaves, green
pompoms, or bits of green
chenille stems).
Measure the caterpillar
- Use yarn or chenille stems
trimmed to different sizes.
Measure the “caterpillars”
using pompoms. Use the
caterpillar and find things
that are longer/shorter/
same length. Write obser-
vations on the recording
sheet.
Counting caterpillars -
Write a number. Create a
caterpillar made up by
that many dots, using dot
stickers or dot paints.
Butterflies
LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION
Science
Butterfly videos - Watch
Butterflies and Life Cycle of
a Butterfly. Discuss obser-
vations and what was
learned.
Fizzing caterpillars - Use
this idea to create colorful
caterpillar segments. This
can also be done without
any color. Then kids use
pipettes to drop vinegar
onto the caterpillars, mak-
ing them fizz.
Life cycle emergent
reader - Explore the life
cycle of a butterfly with an
emergent reader.
Real butterflies - Look at
photos of real butterflies.
Sketch them. Discuss the
main body parts and
make observations.
Life cycle necklace -
Retell the butterfly life cy-
cle while making a neck-
lace to wear.
Literacy
Butterfly names - Use
pasta “butterflies” to
make name art.
Sorting B and C words -
Make a simple chart, with
one column for B (like but-
terfly) and one column for
C (like caterpillar). Say a
word that starts with one
of those letters. Emphasize
the first sound. Children
determine where the word
belongs.
Butterfly letters - Use pas-
ta “butterflies” to form let-
ters.
Butterfly rhyming - Say
two words. If the two
words rhyme kids flutter like
a butterfly. If they do not
rhyme, kids stand still.
Caterpillar syllables -
Sort the caterpillar pic-
tures based on the
number of syllables in
each word.
Other Butterfly play dough
invitation - Create a play
dough garden the butter-
flies will be sure to love.
Symmetry butterflies -
Make the classic butterfly
art project. Draw an out-
line of a butterfly on white
construction paper. Fold it
in half along the line of
symmetry. Unfold. Squirt
paint on one half. Fold the
other half over and press
down. Unfold and let the
paint dry. Cut out the but-
terfly.
Life cycle sensory bin -
Use pasta to represent
the butterfly life cycle.
Place in a bin. Add
tongs, spoons and cups.
Butterfly garden free
painting - Paint a beau-
tiful garden with butter-
flies.
Beaded caterpillars and
butterflies - Add beads
to pipe cleaners. Bend
and shape into caterpil-
lars and/or butterflies.
(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their
own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by
subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly
Math
Symmetry Matching Cards -
Print the cards out. Cut in half.
Laminate. Children match the
halves of the butterflies.
Butterfly Roll and Graph - Roll
the die. Color the appropriate
spot on the graph. See which
one wins.
Literacy
Letter Cards - Match upper-
case and lowercase letters,
put in ABC order, or create
names/words.
Butterfly Words - Use letter tiles,
magnetic letters, or other al-
phabet manipulatives to
make the butterfly words.
Science
Butterfly Sorting - Sort the but-
terfly pictures.
Life Cycle - Draw a picture of
each stage of the butterfly life
cycle. You can also use the
printable life cycle cards.
Sensory
Sky Sensory Bin - Dye rice blue
using liquid watercolors or
food coloring. Once dried,
add to a bin. Place bowtie
pasta “butterflies” to the bin.
Add spoons, cups, and other
sensory tools to the bin. (TF)
Crawling Caterpillars Bin - Add
shredded green paper or split
peas to a bin. Place caterpillar
toys, or pasta along with sen-
sory tools. (TF)
Block Play
Butterfly Garden - Build a but-
terfly garden using blocks of all
kinds. Add butterfly and cater-
pillar toys or pasta.
Lego Caterpillars and Butter-
flies - Use Lego or Duplo bricks
to create caterpillars and but-
terflies.
Arts and Crafts
Coffee Filter Butterflies - Color
a coffee filter with markers.
Spray lightly with water. Once
dry, wrap a pipe cleaner
around the middle of the cof-
fee filter to make the butter-
fly’s body. (TF)
Clay Caterpillars and Butter-
flies - Use air dry clay or Model
Magic to create caterpillars
and/or butterflies. Once dry,
they can be painted.

The thing is, dear parent, that I can only talk to you about YOUR child. So, what I can tell you is this: If ever, at any point, YOUR child, or any of your children, becomes THAT child… I will not share your personal family business with other parents in the classroom. I will communicate with you frequently, clearly, and kindly. I will make sure there are tissues nearby at all our meetings, and if you let me, I will hold your hand when you cry. I will advocate for your child and family to receive the highest quality of specialist services, and I will cooperate with those professionals to the fullest possible extent. I will make sure your child gets extra love and affection when she needs it most. I will be a voice for your child in our school community. I will, no matter what happens, continue to look for, and to find, the good, amazing, special, and wonderful things about your child. I will remind him and YOU of those good amazing special wonderful things, over and over again. And when another parent comes to me, with concerns about YOUR child… I will tell them all of this, all over again. b u t t e r f l y
