Lesson Planning Activity

1. Grade Level: 6 - Adult2. Literature: To Your Health!3. Materials:

6. Approach/Strategies:6.1 Pre-reading

Pre-test: Answer the questionnaire before we proceed.

Direct students’ attention to the question, “How do you stay healthy?” Point to each picture and ask a rhetorical question so that students can hear the vocabulary (e.g. “Do you play sports?” Have students raise their hands to respond. Ask individuals follow up questions such as “What kinds of sports do you play?” Write a list of sports on the board as students name them.

Ask students to put checks next to the pictures showing things they do to stay healthy. (3 min.)

Let students continue the interview for the rest of the pictures. Call on volunteers or students who seldom participate in class.

6.2 During Reading 6.2.1 Have students look at the title. Tell students they are going to read answers from a survey about staying healthy. The survey question is “How do you stay healthy?” 6.2.2 Ask the students to read the survey silently. Direct them to read looking for the answer to the survey question (i.e. how each of the six stays healthy). 6.2.2 List down the word/s that you do not know as you read the passage.

Lyn ConeAge: 88 years old

“I don’t exercise. I just enjoy life. Keep smiling, I

always say.”

Li ChangAge: 24 years old

“I go to a gym three times a week. I usually go

after work.”

Herb WoodAge: 48 years old

“Stay healthy? Well… I smoke. And I don’t

exercise. I sit at a desk all day. I do take vitamins…

sometimes.”

Nobuyuki OdaAge: 52 years old

“I get my exercise at my job. I’m a construction

worker. I stand from 8 in the morning to 6 in the

evening. I’m always bending and lifting heavy

things. Do you want to see my muscles?”

Velia CruzAge: 28 years old

“I love sports – all kinds! I love tennis, soccer,

baseball, and basketball. I have to work during the

week but I try to play sports on the weekends.”

Megumi SaitoAge: 35 years old

“I have three children. One is three. One is four.

One is six. They’re always running. I can

never sit down. That’s my exercise – running after children. Oh…excuse

me…there they go now!”

6.3 Post-reading 6.3.1 When students finish reading, direct them to turn their reading passage over. 6.3.2 Ask students to tell you how each of the six stays healthy. Possible answers would be:

Lyn Cone enjoys life. Li Chang goes to a gym. Herb Wood takes vitamins…sometimes. Nobuyuki Oda gets exercise at his job. Velia Cruz plays sports. Megumi Saito runs after her children.

7. Application7.1 Oral:

Play a listening and speaking game. Say, “He is 24 years old. He goes to a gym after work. Who is he?” Once students understand the “rules,” have them play in two groups (Group A and Group B); each member will have a chance to participate. The teacher will write the scores on the board for each group.

Ask students whether they have additional ways to healthy living that are not included in the questionnaire or mentioned in the survey.

7.2 Written:

I jog. I swim. I dance.

I smoke. I meditate. I walk a lot. I play sports. I ride a bicycle.

7.3 Creative: Demonstrate to the class the physical activities shown in the pictures. Perform as many examples as you can. One example for each student so that all students can participate (e.g. Aerobics – Step Aerobics, Dance – Cha-Cha, Mambo, Boogie, Swimming – Breast stroke, Back stroke, Freestyle, Butterfly).
