Backwards Design for (Company Name)Stage 1: Identify Desired Results.

Established GoalsSlowly integrate the UbD framework into (your company)’s workflow.

Demonstrate the effectiveness of essential questions and enduring understandings.

Convince other trainers, developers, and instructional designers to promote the use of backward design.

Essential QuestionsIs backward design useful to my work?

What is essential to backward design?

How can I implement backwards design without making waves?

How do I convince my team to adopt backwards design?

Enduring UnderstandingsWhat will participants know?

Understand how backward design is useful to you.Understand the three steps of backward design well enough to sell the idea.

What will participants be able to do?Advocate for the adoption of backwards design (partial or full implementation).Explain to others how to craft essential questions and enduring understandings.

EquityParticipants implement partially and gauge coworkers’ reactions to backwards design before attempting implementation.Participants always use the UbD framework flexibly. They can pick and choose relevant elements from UbD’s framework and change the order of steps, based on their project’s needs.

STAGE 2- Assessment EvidenceAuthentic Performance Tasks Other Evidence of UnderstandingGenerating essential questions.

Identifying enduring understandings.

Trying the planning tools (blueprint, or the shorter matrix) with small teams.

Opinion Surveys (informal and/or formal)

Discussion (informal and/or formal)

Effectiveness of your instructional design process with incorporation of UbD elements.

How to identify participants’ strengths/areas for growth How will this assessment inform your instruction?

Coaching individuals or small groups.

Observation of small groups trying out parts of the UbD framework.

Continuous assessment of UbD effectiveness (mostly informal, and some formal)

Gauge your work team’s interest in the tools you demonstrate.

Integrate backward design elements into the workflow with the eventual goal of full-scale implementation.

STAGE 3- Learning PlanPre-Instruction:Just start using elements of backward design in appropriate situations:

Model Essential Questions often with team(s). You needn’t be explicit about what you’re doing.Model identifying Enduring Understandings. “So the audience/participants/users/students need to understand…”

For instructional design projects, think about assessment earlier in the process-- before planning activities/instruction.Observe improvement in the design/planning phases when you use backward design elements.

Introduction: 5mAfter demonstrating either Essential Questions or Enduring Understandings for a while, mention to your team that you started using this technique after learning about backward design. Mention the positive results that came of their use.See if there is interest- if there is interest, continue with the following:Activities and Instruction: 5mExplain how Essential Questions are useful for guiding planning and design.Describe the types of Essential Questions and practice developing questions.Describe topical vs. overarching Enduring Understandings, and explain that you should have a mix of the two.

5m

When you might benefit from it, try using a tool for developing assessment:WHERETO or the Six Facets of Understanding.

7m

Try using the Matrix when you begin a project. If needed, adapt the matrix. 10-20mAdapt the long template to fit your needs. Try the template with a real project. 15-30mClosure: 15mIf backward design is useful, hold a meeting to discuss ways backward design elements can fit into the current workflow, and plans to implement!Practice & Extending Learning:Be a thought leader in Training and Development. Your company may wish to encourage others to engage with backward design by hosting talks and meet-ups about backward design. Blog about it, study it, and share it!Resources and Materials:Check out ascd.com for books and articles about UbD.Understanding by Design, Second Edition, by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, 2005.
