Lesson Design

Energisers Warm up activities to energise and focus attention

Introduction & Mental Set Quick review activity of last session. Include a “Mental Set” that is the “hook” to help students “tune in” and engage with the topic

Sharing the Objective Have a clear set of objectives for the session and communicate those objectives to students

Input/Information Can be a PowerPoint presentation, a video, a group discussion, student’s reading from a text or researching on line

Models/Demonstrate Show students how to do something and display some examples “you prepared earlier” or show some real examples from industry

Check for understanding Ask questions, give quizzes, or observe students working on tasks

Give Feedback Give students feedback to let them know how they are going with reaching the objective

Practice (Guided and Independent)

Many students learn best by doing, so give them plenty of opportunity to practise their new skills. Lecturers may want to give students guidance and feedback while they are practising (Guided Practice) and other times they may ask students to practise on their own (Independent Practice)

Wrap up (Closure)

Ask students to recap what you have taught them; telling or showing you what they have learned. Help them to evaluate if they have reached the objective. Give students activities to do in the workplace so that their new knowledge and skills are transferred to the workplace.

Remember there is no special order to do these and you don’t need every component in every session. Each session is different and will depend on the individual trainer/assessor, the subject matter, the training environment and the learning style and needs of students. These components are just a reminder that good practice in training is more than just input with talk and PowerPoint!
