lesson plan: story of an artefact

5
Learners to understand the process of discovering and researching an artefact History, Archaeology What is an artefact? What is an archaeologist? What is an archaeological excavation? When were the 11 th and 13 th Centuries? (11 th Century: 1000- 1099, 13 th Century: 1200 – 1299) What does interpretation mean? Read through the information about the carving. Ask the learners to discuss the three questions in pairs. Share and discuss some of the answers with the class. Preparation work: Place many different items in a sandbox or another area where it is possible to search/dig for artefacts. The learners must go through the process an archaeologist would go through whilst searching for artefacts. 1. Find the object 2. Clean the object 3. Photograph/draw the object 4. Write down a description 5. Put the object on display. Ask the learners to create a small exhibition of the items they found. The learners should choose a theme to link the different artefacts.
