VII. Social Studies Extensions

Present slides two and three to class as a whole group discussion, and during the presentation students will engage in watching a “Brain Pop” video over Mayan Civilization along with participating in whole group activities on “Brain pop” website such as; games, word wall, pop a joke, and quizzes.

After students have been presented with the information about the Mayan civilization I will put the students in small groups of 3-4 and have them discuss the information they have acquired.

Expose power point slide five which includes background and history of the National flag to students and have the students recreate Guatemalan flag by coloring their own.

Watch a “you tube” over the Guatemalan national anthem and then participate in a class lead discussion about what the anthem means as a whole group and then ask students to independently write in their journal about what their interpretation is of the anthem.

Lead the class into a discussion about the geographical features of Guatemala using the slide show presentation.

Introduce the map of Guatemala, and ask questions such as; how many cities do you see on the map? What do you think the red triangles mean? How many countries surround Guatemala? Have the students get into groups and discuss what they think each feature is and what it stands for. After they have had the opportunity to discuss it in groups we will have a whole class discussion.

As a whole class discussion we will utilize the KWL chart. While we are discussing our map features I will also ask the class about the ring of fire, what it means, and where it is located. Then we will pass out the printed maps, and lead the class in a discussion about identifying the objects on the map, and have the children color, label, and identify the main characteristics of the Guatemalan map in pairs.

Using partners have the students review vocabulary words by completing Guatemalan word search.

VIII. Science Extensions

Tell students that they are going to watch a video about volcanoes. Have the students discuss the following questions with a partner followed by a whole class discussion.(Think-pair-Share)1. What is a volcano?2. What is an inactive volcano?3. What is an active volcano?4. How do you think volcanoes are formed?

Pass out “What is a Volcano” worksheet. Inform them NOT to fill out the worksheet until we are discussing this as a class. As a whole class we will discuss the answers they came up with and which ones is right or wrong making sure the students have a clear understanding and good comprehension of the questions and concepts. Have the students fill out their “What is a Volcano” worksheet as we discuss it.

Show the class a video on you tube about volcanoes. <http://youtu.be/BcFtpWjZwlE> It tells about the facts of volcanoes, how they are created, and what makes them erupt.

Now that we have discussed all of the facts regarding volcanoes I will have the students assist me in making an actual active erupting volcano. I will ask for volunteers to come up and actually measure the ingredients and follow the given instructions for making the volcano.

Discuss with the children what they think is going to happen when we make our volcano and why.

Observe, and assist the children in making their volcanoes erupt.

After the experiment I will have the children write a general journal entry using their vocabulary words to answer the following questions that I will post on the overhead.1. What do you think it would feel like living next to one?2. Do you think volcanoes are scary or pretty?3. Did you like doing the experiment?4. How would you make your own volcano at home

IX. Math Extensions

Put students in groups of four; pass out recipe cards to each group for Bunuelos a traditional holiday food (common to the native donut.) Engage the students by having them make the Bunuelos dough according to the recipe by following measurements and mixing instructions. I will then take the dough home and fry it for safety reasons. The following day I will bring the finished product back for the children to eat for cultural experience and exposure. While the students taste our homemade Bunuelos we will engage in whole class discussion about what they think. Do they like it? How is it/ isn’t it like our donut? What foods in our cultural holidays are like these?

Discuss how different countries have different currency. Using the mix freeze groups cooperative structure I will have the children get into groups of four and discuss what they think Guatemala’s currency is, what it looks like, and if they think it is worth the same amount as the US dollar followed by a whole class discussion.

After the group discussion I will pass out the Guatemalan Quetzal fact sheet, and discuss the facts and history about the Guatemalan currency. We will discuss the exchange rate, what it is, and how it works.

After discussing exchange rates I will discuss with them which mathematical equation they will have to use to convert from US dollars to Guatemalan Quetzals and then use the website http://coinmill.com/GTQ_USD.html. As a whole group we will discuss what types of items you could buy on vacation and how much they will cost. I will then have students come up and actually put one of those amounts into the converter and we will see how much that amounts to in Guatemalan Quetzals. Teach the equation that $1USD = $7.86 GTQ.

I will hand out the conversion worksheet to allow them to practice their math and conversion skills independently. For example $10 usd = $78.62 GQT; If you went on vacation to Guatemala and started with $582 and spend $40.82 on a souvenir how much would you have left?

After they have had an opportunity to convert the money from US dollars to Guatemalan Quetzal’s and have learned about different currencies I will have the students write in their journals using their new vocabulary terms about:

Tell me about a time when you traveled to Guatemala (make believe) and had to convert your US dollars to Guatemalan Quetzals.

Tell me how you had to use your exchange rate skills and conversion skills to make sure you had enough money for your trip.

What was it like using foreign money?

Volcanoes! Volcanoes! Volcanoes!Where the Guatemala Volcanoes’ are located and how volcanoes work

1. Guatemala Map: After learning about the history of Guatemala and how their money is used. You will use your knowledge to learn more in depth about Guatemala Volcanoes and where they are located.

First, observe carefully: How many cities do you see on the map? What do you think those red triangles mean? How many countries surround Guatemala?

Next, look at the map up close. What do you think the city with the green dot is? Do you think it’s very populated? Do you see any lakes or oceans? Can you name them? Why do you think that all of the volcanoes are along the edge close to the North Pacific Ocean?

Imagine that you are a cartographer (mapmaker). How do you think they start making their maps? Do you think they draw and label the cities first after outlining the country? Can you label the cities for me on the map that I gave you? Now what did the red triangles stand for? Can you draw and label all eight volcanoes? Raise your hand if you remember the capital of Guatemala. What type of symbol should we use to make the capital stand out? Now label the body of water and color the map you created.

2. All about Volcanoes: After creating your own map and learning where all of the volcanoes are located we will use these next few items to learn more in depth about the active volcanoes in Guatemala, listen to a cute song about the facts of a volcanoes and create our own volcano and watch it erupt in front of our own eyes.

First, listen carefully: There are only about three active volcanoes. Can anyone guess off of our map which of the three they are? How many volcanoes do you think there are actually in Guatemala other then the eight major ones on our map?

Next, tell me some quick facts about volcanoes. How do you think volcanoes are formed? How many volcanoes do you think are erupting as we speak?

Imagine that you are near a volcano while watching this short clip. What do you think it would be like to be next to one?

3. Volcano Action: We have created a map locating where all the volcanoes are, listened and watched a clip over volcanoes and listed a few quick facts about volcanoes. Now, you will use all of your knowledge about the Guatemala volcanoes to create your very own volcano.

First, observe carefully all the material. Why do you think I’m using these certain materials? Which item will make the lava color? What make it’s so bubbly and fizzy? What two things do you think will react together to cause the reaction?

2012 Kellie Burchfield, Hannah Marshall, Sunni Edwards TAMU-CommerceThe History of Guatemala Unit Lesson Plan, Page 16 of 33

Page 17: LESSON PLAN FORMAT FOR GARLAND€¦  · Web viewLesson Title: The History of Guatemala. By: Kellie Burchfield. For Grade(s): 5th ESL Level(s): Intermediate/Advanced. TEKS: Language

Next, let’s start the experiment and watch the eruption. What do you think happened? Did the right two items you picked to cause the reaction actually cause it? What color was the lava? Did it actually look like a volcano erupting.

Imagine that you are a volcano expert and write a general entry. What do you think it would feel like to be living next to one of those? Do you think volcanoes are scary or pretty? Did you like creating this experiment? How would you make your own volcano at home?

Volcanic Eruption Experiment

Here’s what you need:

an empty 16 oz. plastic soda or water bottle

paper plate

two spoonfuls of baking soda

three squirts of dish soap

red or yellow food coloring

two tablespoons of vinegar

What to do:

1. Put the container onto the paper plate. 2. Add two spoonfuls of baking soda.3. Add three squirts of dish soap.4. Add about three to five drops of food coloring.5. Now add your two tablespoons of vinegar I gave you to the volcano and watch

it ERUPT!!!

How does it work: Once the baking soda and vinegar mix together you produce Carbon Dioxide gas, which will bubble up and force the "lava" up and out of the volcano. COOL!! A VOLCANO is produced over thousands of years as heat a pressure build up. That aspect of a volcano is very difficult to recreate in a home experiment. However this volcano will give you an idea of what it might look like when a volcano erupts flowing lava. This is a classic experiment in which a CHEMICAL reaction can create the appearance of a PHYSICAL volcano eruption.

The Guatemalan Quetzal

The currency in Guatemala is called the Quetzal. It is named after the national bird of Guatemala. In ancient Mayan culture, the quetzal bird's tail feathers were used as currency. It is divided into 100 cents,

called centavos in standard Spanish or lenes in Guatemalan slang. The plural can be either quetzales (as it is in Spanish) or quetzals (in a slightly anglicized form).

The quetzal was introduced in 1925 during the term of President José María Orellana, whose image appears on the obverse of the one-quetzal bill. It replaced the peso. Until 1987, the quetzal was pegged to and domestically equal to the United States dollar and before the pegging to the US dollar, it was pegged to the French franc as well, since it (the Guatemalan quetzal) utilized the gold standard.

CoinsGeneral CharacteristicsThe thickness of the coins will be the required according to their respective diameters, alloys and weights. The coins will have the shape of a disk. The front of all of them will have the national coat of arms of Guatemala inscribed on the front. On the upper part, and around this, the inscription will be: REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA (Republic of Guatemala); and along the bottom, in a circular form, the year of minting will be engraved.
