Health & Wellness Safety: First Aid Lesson Plan 1  Safety: First Aid 1  Grade Level: 2-4 Overview: Students will learn how to use a first aid kit safely and effectively. The students will learn when to use the items in a first aid kit and if there is an emergency bigger then the y can handle, they will learn to find a trusted adult of call 911. INDIANA STANDARDS 2 3 Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and  products and services to enhance health.  This standard focuses on how to identify and access valid health resources. Students know who to ask for he alth information and health-  promoting products to prevent health problems.  OBJECTIVES By the end of this activity, students will be able to do the following:  Describe the contents of a first aid kit  Know when to use items in a first aid kit  Be able to pick out items in a first aid kit for their correct purpose MATERIALS First Aid Items: Band-Aids Ace bandage Gauze pads Instant cold pack Adhesive tape Sterile wipes Scissors Neosporin  Non-latex gloves First aid bag/box Non-First Aid Items: Spatula Envelope Penny Magnet Tin foil Hairbrush Pencil Etc. Lint roller BEFORE THE ACTIVITY  Person administering this activity should prepare a First Aid kit ahead of time to present to students.  In addition to the demonstration first aid kit, prepare as man y boxes as needed of all the materials listed above so that a group of 5-6 students can have a box. Each box should contain all of the materials so that the students can decide which items are necessary for a first aid kit. PROCEDURES 1. Ask students what they think an emergency is. Receive responses from the students, and then tell them what an emergency is: “A sudden, urgent, usually unexpected occurrence or occasion requiring immediate action.”  2. Tell the students that there are man y kinds of emergencies and that if an y of the students feel like they are in danger or have an emergency to find a trusted adult or to call 911. Empha size that a trusted adult means a parent, tea cher, guardian, etc. 3. Tell the students that today the y will be learning about the first aid kit and its uses. 4. Have students gather around in a circle and sit in a chair so that you have their attention. Take out your alread y prepared first aid kit. 5. Take out each item and say its name and what the item is used for. (Possibly  pass around the item so that the students can take a better look). 6. Give some examples of an emergency.     3. Tell the students that today they will be learning about the first aid kit and its

    uses.

    4. Have students gather around in a circle and sit in a chair so that you have

    their attention. Take out your already prepared first aid kit.

    5. Take out each item and say its name and what the item is used for. (Possibly

    pass around the item so that the students can take a better look).

    6. Give some examples of an emergency. Examples such as:

    a. Falling off of a bicycle and scraping ones knees. b. Twisting an ankle.

    c. Getting a black eye.

    7. Tell what you would use for each scenario.

    a. Put on non-latex gloves. Use gauze to wipe blood from the scrape. Use sterile

    wipe to clean the cut. Put Neosporin on the scrape and then put a Band-Aid

    on it.

    b. Take the ace bandage and wrap around the twisted ankle.

    c. Use the instant cold pack and put on black eye.

    8. Split the students into groups of 5-6. Have them sit around a table and give

    each group a box of all the materials. Instruct the students to pick out which

    items belong in a first aid kit and tell them to put those items in the first aid

    bag/box.

    9. Once they are finished, have each group present to the instructor what is in

    their first aid bag. Help them if they have chosen incorrect items.

    10. Collect the boxes of materials.

    EVALUATION Tell the students to explain what they did in class today to their parents and ask

    if they can help prepare a first aid kit for their own home.
