Abdul Muttalib proposed to keep the name Muhammed.

Muhammed means: Praise, thanks, perfect attributes.

The Quraysh were astounished and said no one has kept this name.

Abul Muttalib replied I am keeping it so Allah and the angels praise him in the heavens and the creation praise him on the earth.

No one previously had kept this name. It is mentioned Allah seal the peoples heart to keep them from keep the name.

It is mention in the Injeel:

“There will be a prophet come after me whose name will be Ahmed” (Surah Saff, v 6)

Imam Bukhari mentions Allah extracted the Prophet's name from his own so

that he may be exalted. The one on the throne is Mahmud whilst this is Muhammed.

Prophet will be in the Maqam Mahmud (rank of praise) in heaven.

He will have the banner of praise.

Prophet's other names

Propeht said “I have five other name, I am Muhammed, I am Ahmed, I am Mahi (person who rejects disbelief) I am Hashir (people will gather at my feet) I am aqib (Last of all Prophets)

Some scholars say the Prophet has 99 times.

Keep a good name

Names have affects on people's personality. For instance, abu Jahl, Abu Hakam, Umar

Farooq, Abu bakr Siddiq. Keep a name with a good meaning, it will have

a postive effect on the child. Name after Prophet & companions. Hadith: Allah loves the names Abdullah and

Abdur Rahman.

Nickname, Title

Prophets title was Abul-Qasim, then Abu Ibrahim.

Jibraeel came to the Prophet and addressed him “O Abu Ibrahim”.

Is it permissible to have nicknames?
