Placement: Classplacementisimportantforvoiceprojectionandvisibility.If you are in a small area, you may need to strategically place puppies and owners according to thepersonalitytypesofthevariouspuppies.Remainvisibleatalltimesandensureyoucanalwaysseeeachowneralongwiththeirpuppy.Avoidhavingownersbehindwalls,aroundcornersordoorsanddon’tallowthemtohavetheirbackstoyou.Chairsareokaybutdotendtotakeuproomifyouhaveasmallarea. Youmayprovidechairs for thosewhorequirethem.Puppiesshouldbespacedoutaccordinglyandproblempuppiesshouldbekeptatdistance,whereownerandpuppyarecomfortable.

Setthehouserulesearly• At the start of each course, hand out a set of House rules so that everyone is clear onwhat is
required• Houserulescaninclude,childrenattending,numberofadults,safety,attendance,etc
Childreninyourclass• Sometimes youwill meet the ‘Miller” family who have brought along little 3 year old Jonathan
becauseFredtheRottweilerwillbehisdog• Wewouldrecommendthatyouinstilanagerequirementforchildrenhandlingpuppiesforsafety
reasonsAsktheadultstohandlethedogintheclassandthechildrencanpracticeathome.
Ifanolderchildishandlingthepuppyinclass:• Be aware that they are probably intimidated by having to work with adults. Avoid “putting the
spotlight”onthemtoomuch.• Correctthemquietlyandpraisequietlytoo.Don’tsinglethemoutfordemonstrations!• Thefirstpointinturnaffectstheirhandling,insteadofaskingthemtobe“firm”or“incontrol”in
voiceandmovement,concentrateontechniqueofexerciseandquietperseverance• Bearinmindthatthepuppyseesthechildasanotherplaymateandthusthechildhastowork10

WH&SandRiskAssessmentToday,muchconsiderationmustbegiventothesafetyoftheworkplace.Safetyandriskassessmentsmustbemadeforboththepuppiesintheareaandalsothepeoplewhowillaccompanythem.RiskAssessmentBefore thecommencementofeachclass, thepuppy school instructormustassess thearea forpotentialhazardsandensurethattheseareaddressedimmediatelyandpriortoanypuppyandownerenteringthearea.Considerationmustbegiventothefollowing:Sizeofroom/areavsnumberandsizeofdogsBerealisticwiththenumberofpuppies,andtheirowners,thatcancomfortablyandsafelyfitinthearea.Youmust consider thebreedofpuppiesenrolledas largerbreedpuppieswill takeupmuchmore roomthansmallerbreeds.Youmightalsohavetocapthenumberofownersthatcanattendiftheareaissmall.ArrangingtheclassparticipantsaccordingtoroomArrangechairsandtables(ifrequired)sothattheyarenotatrippinghazardorareinthewayofemergencyexits,toiletsanddoorwaysWherewillyouputshy/aggressivepuppies?PlaypensorareasallocatedforshyandaggressivepuppiesmustbecarefullyconsideredsothattheyareawayfromgeneralmovementandtrafficEquipmenttobeusedfortheclasses–willitfit?Ifyouarethinkingofbringingequipment,besureyouhaveenoughroomforittofitcomfortably. HygieneKeeping the training area hygienically clean at all times will be an integral part of the process of classinstructing. The trainingarea shouldbepreparedbyensuringall surfacesarecleanedwithappropriatedisinfectant(F10)beforetheclassesstart.Alltoysandequipmentusedshouldalsobethoroughlycleanedtoensurethereisnoresiduesecretionsleftover.Thismustbedoneaftereachclassandbeforeanynewclassescommence.Handwashingfacilitiesandhandsanitisersshouldbemadeavailabletoeveryoneasshouldbecleantowelsandrubbishbins
