The Shih Tzu was bred by the emperors in China. It developed a proud gait and walks about as if owned the surroundings. It is definitely a dog that could be

considered prideful. We need to be careful about bragging and becoming prideful. Love is not proud or boastful. It cares about other’s feelings, not making itself look good. When we are focused on others instead of ourselves, we will stay away from

behavior that imitates a Shih Tzu.

Deputy Catch U. Dog Supplies: None Hello, again. Yes, you guessed it; I am trying to

find another dog. That is the story of my life. I guess that is how I get my name. . . Catch U. Dawg. Get it? (Laughing to himself.) Now, back to my current dog problem. The dog I am looking for likes to walk around with her head held high. She acts like she owns the place if you get my drift. This dog (show the picture) is called a Shih Tzu. From what I understand, she seems to have been a favorite dog in China with the emperors. That probably explains why she has such a proud way of walking! Yep, that dog thinks she’s all that and a bag of chips. (Sound of royal trumpet) Does that not beat all you have ever heard? She’s got someone announcing her arrival. I’d better follow that trumpet sound. (Leaves, shaking his head.)

Francois/Francine the Dog Groomer Supplies: Hairbrush, hair clips, ponytail holders, colored gel (optional)

I heard that you need a dog groomer. I am just the person to fit your needs. I am a dog groomer extraordinaire. I am known from the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the London Bridge in London to the Statue of Liberty in New York City to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the Great Wall of China in well, uh, well, in China of course. I am known for my tasteful coiffing of man’s favorite beast. . . le dog. Francois (Francine) the Dog Groomer at your service (bows low). Allow me to show you my portfolio (Go through the six PowerPoint pictures of dogs groomed in outrageous ways. Francois should elaborate on each picture.) Oh, my job, it is so stressful. Each and every dog owner believes his dog is the very best. The owners, they sit about my salon boasting about their dog and how it won this show or that show. They are so proud of their accomplishments. And so they demand the perfect grooming for their dogs. And the dogs! Oh! The dogs. They preen this way and that way and this way and that way (show with his body). They think that they are so much better than all the other dogs. Now, I have heard that you are looking for a groomer for the Shih Tzu. This dog is a very difficult dog to groom. Oh, this dog has such long hair that must be combed just right. And a bow on the top of the head-it must be placed just so!

I know just the thing to help you decide if I would be the groomer for you. I need a dog to groom right before your very eyes. (He looks around the room.) I cannot find a candidate worthy of my calling. But you, (chooses a girl from the room), you could fill in for the candidate that would be worthy of my calling. (Sits her down in a chair and begins “grooming” her hair. Francois should start putting hair clips in her hair, odd pony tails, etc. until she has “wild” hair. You could even do colored gel. Just check with parents beforehand.) So, what do you think? Might I be the person for the job? I’ll be in touch or you be in touch or we will be in touch or. . one-way or the other let’s be in touch. Ta. Ta.

Bible Story Jesus Healing the Leper Matt 8:1-4 Supplies: Wheel for Wheel of truth (a.k.a. Wheel of Fortune), letters written on individual

pieces of paper (L E P R O S Y) Preparation: Put the letters in order to spell LEPROSY. Turn them around and tape them on the wall or pin them to a bulletin board. The wheel: You can use a variety of supplies. You may already have a carnival wheel that would work. You can also use the spinner from the Twister® game. You can have someone in your church make a wheel out of wood and put it on a wooden stand. You can use PVC pipes to make a stand for a wheel. You can also use foam board for the wheel. Then make a spinner out of poster board and use a large brad to

attach it in the center of the wheel. Divide the wheel into eight pie shape portions. Label the portions of the wheel: Lose Turn, Go Again, 500, 100, 50,, 5000, 200, 300. We are going to talk about a disease and how Jesus treated someone that had the disease. But first to help us figure out what the disease was called is Bob, Bark the Truth. Give a warm dog welcome to our barky game show host. (Bob enters barking and getting the crowd to bark with him.) Bob: Good morning! Who wants to play Wheel of Truth? I am going to need three contestants. (Call three people of like ages up). Have you ever played Wheel of Truth before? You spin the wheel then guess a letter. If you are correct, you get the number of points on the wheel. Ok, contestant number one. What is your name? (Pause for child to answer) You may now spin the wheel. After the contestant makes a guess, move to the next contestant. Each one gets one guess whether correct or not. Bob continues to play the game until all the letters are guessed or someone guesses the word “LEPROSY”. Thank you for playing Wheel of Truth! (Bob, Bark the Truth leaves barking.) The disease was leprosy. Leprosy is a terrible disease. It causes the nerves in your feet and hands to die so you cannot feel anything. What do you think happens to your hands and feet if you cannot feel anything? (Get hurt, burned, drop things) So, often people would lose the use of their hands and feet from

injuries to them. Also, the skin would have white lesions on it. In Jesus’ time, people that had leprosy had to go live away from others. They were outcasts in society. Nobody wanted anything to do with him or her. Let’s see how Jesus treats a leper. The book of Matthew tells us what happened. It is in Matthew 8:1-3. “When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.” Jesus not only healed the man, but he also touched him! Jesus did not treat him proudly rather Jesus was humble by touching him, loving him. He did not act like he was better than the leper. How do you treat others? Do you look down on people that do not have as much as you? How about the things that you are good at doing? When you are around others that might not be as skilled as you, do you look down at them? For instance, if you play sports well and you are on a baseball team, do you encourage other players that might not be as good as you? Or if you can run faster than your brothers and sisters, do you point it out to them? In I Corinthians 13:4 it says that “Love is not boastful or proud.” That means that when we show real love to people, we never think we are better than them. We never boast about all that we can do. We think of them first, not ourselves.

Prayer Ask God to help the children see each person as He does. Help them realize each person is important because God made them.

Dog House Supplies: Flea collar (or other flea control item) (Call up a volunteer to

search the doghouse for the object of the day.) What is this? Does anyone know what this is for? (To keep fleas off of dogs) Why is a flea collar in the doghouse? Anyone have an idea? No matter how wonderful a dog you are, you can still get fleas. You might be a beautiful, royal acting Shih Tzu or you might be a mangy homeless mutt, but if you go where there are fleas you are going to get fleas on you. That is unless you have help. A flea collar helps dogs keep fleas off of them. It is the same way with us. Every one of us can have problems. Nobody here will get through life without them. We all need help sometimes. We do not want to feel like we are so above others that we do not accept help or give help. We do not want to brag about how good we are and never ask for help. When we brag about ourselves we make others around us feel bad. So remember “Do not be proud and brag out loud.” (Repeat point together.)

Dog Training Supplies: Straw for each child How many have heard

the phrase, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”? Today we are going to see if you can learn a new trick. You will need a partner for this trick. (Divide group into groups of twos. Pass out two straws to each group.) I want one of you to tightly pinch both ends of a straw. Now, twist the straw around and around as if you are winding up a kite string. Keep twisting it until you cannot twist any more. The part of the straw that did not get twisted will be hard because it is filled with air. Now have your partner flick his/her finger at the air-filled part of the straw. (The straw will make a loud popping sound.) Now trade places and let your partner hold the straw. Sometimes people are too proud to learn new ways of doing things. When we have a prideful attitude, we miss out on learning some pretty incredible stuff. What if you had not listened to the trick or tried the trick?

Obedience School Supplies: Role playing cards (page 10) Divide the children into

groups and let them role play the following situations:

1. You receive a new bike for your birthday. Your friend comes over and begins telling you all the things her bike has that yours does not.

2. You see a new boy at the

playground. You noticed him during gym class at well. He can’t play sports very good. You are playing kick ball with some friends and you need one more person for your team.

3. You won first place in the relay at

school during field day. When you get home you want to tell your brother about how you were better than everyone.

Doggie Bag Snack Mix

Supplies: M and M’s®, pretzels, raisins, Chex® cereal, paper cups (one per child), bowl (one per four children) Divide the children into groups of four. Each person in the group is given a cup of one of the ingredients. The group must mix all their ingredients together to make the snack mix. Everyone had to work together to make the snack mix. Each person had to do his/her part. When we start boasting about how good we are, we often forget to do our part in helping others. We are only focused on ourselves.

Memory verse Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. I Corinthians 13:4

Supplies: Poster board, markers Write a phrase from the passage on each poster board. Divide the children into five groups. Have the group with “love is patient” stand and shout out their verse. The group with “love is kind” must next stand and say their verse. Continue this until the whole verse has been said. Do it again as fast as they can go. Also, to make it more challenging, have the groups not stand in the order the verse comes in.

Craft God’s Eyes Supplies: Yarn in various colors, two craft sticks, glue, scissors

Glue the two craft sticks together in a cross. Take one color of yarn and wrap it over and around one stick, then over and around the next, and so on. Continue until the yarn is gone. Tie a different color piece of yarn onto the first one. Tie it in a knot. Continue with different colors until the “eye” is the size you want. Discuss how we need to look at other people and ourselves through God’s eye. This keeps us from being prideful.

Game “Help!” Tag

Supplies: None This game is similar to freeze tag. Pick someone to be “it.” The person who is “it”, tries to tag everyone. When a person is tagged, he must stay still yelling “I need help!” For him to be able to move, someone else must tag him. One way of showing love to others is by helping them when they need it.

Family Fun Just for fun, tell outrageous statements about something you have done.

Discussion:

What is the difference between telling someone something good that has happened to you and boasting about it? Have each family member give an example of boasting. Could each person say it in a way that is not boastful?

Shih Tzus came from China They were in the royal courts of the emperors.
