Application ProblemKaren says that the volume of this prism is 5 cm3 and that she calculated it by adding the sides together. Give the correct volume of this prism, and explain Karen’s error.

Part 1: Find the volume of multilayer prisms using multiplication

Record the length, width, and height of this rectangular prism on your recording sheet.

Then decompose the prism into layers three different ways to find the volume.

Concept Development- Note! Students will need rectangular prism recording sheet from Lesson 3

Three different decompositions!

Record the information on a table!

Number of Layers

Cubes in Each Layer

Volume

4 (3x2) 24cm3

3 (2x4) 24cm3

2 (3x4) 24cm3

How do we use this information to find the volume of the prism? Turn and talk!

We know that this is 1 cubic centimeter. Look at one face of this cube, what is the area of this face?

If 1 square unit is the area of one cube’s face, and there are 6 cubes that make up this face, what is the area of this face? Write a number sentence to show the area. Be sure to include units.

1 square centimeter

3 cm x 2 cm = 6 cm2

What do you notice about the area of the face and the number of cubes in this layer?

We know that to find the volume we have to account for the number of layers in the prism. How many layers are under the face and which dimension of the prism gives us that number?

They are the same!

4 layers… the height

So…We can find he volume by multiplying the area of the face by the height.

Volume =length x width x height

area x heightV= 3cm x 2cm x 4cm = 24 cubic centimeters

(centimeters x centimeters x centimeters)

V= 6cm2 x 4cm = 24cm3

(area x height)

** What happens to the square units when you multiply it by a third factor?

Volume =length x width x height

area x height

Write a multiplication sentence to show how to find the area of this face.

To find volume, we need to know how many layers are to the left of the face?

2cm x 4cm

3 layers

Put it all together!Volume = (2cm x 4cm) x 3cm= ______

Volume =length x width x height

area x height

Write a multiplication sentence to show how to find the area of this front face.

How many layers now?

3cm x 4cm

2 layers

Put it all together!Volume = (3cm x 4cm) x 2cm= ______

Part 2: Calculate the volume when the area of one side is given.

This square shows the top face of a rectangular prism. What is the area of this face?

If the rectangular prism that sits below this face is built of centimeter cubes and has a height of 4cm, how many layers of centimeter cubes are in the prism?

Find the volume! Show me the multiplication sentenceV = 2cm x 2cm x 4cm= 16cm3

V= 4cm2 x 4cm= 16cm3

A = 4cm2
