Tea che r & Par en t Con necti on We love to be amazed. We adore TV shows and mov-ies that wow us! Amazing stories thrill us to our core and remind us that there is more beyond our small, day-to-day lives. And the chapters of God’s big story of redemption are the MOST amazing stories in the whole world!

Moses’ boring day-to-day existence was about as small as anyone can imagine! Living for forty years as a shepherd in the desolate wildness of Midian didn’t have much “wow factor.” Walking with the sheep, watching for predators, gazing at the horizon—that was about all there was—until one strange sight arrested his attention.

Why on earth would a bush burn and burn and not burn up? That amazing phenomenon introduced Moses to a whole new world of God’s big purposes—His as-tonishing plan was revealed. And Moses had already been cast in the lead role!

We don’t know all of Moses’ history between the murder, fearful running and the day God met him in the desert, but human experience might say that he was likely consumed with guilt and fear. He could NEVER return safely to Egypt—and yet, that was EXACTLY what God was asking him to do.

Moses could only see how this was an impossible situation! But God’s abilities begin in the very places where our fear, hiding and inability seem about to overpower us! When we simply choose to stop looking at what we see as realities and choose to say “yes” to God and obediently walk into the impossible situation into which He invites us, we discover that it’s exhila-rating, scary, miraculous—and amazing far beyond our small, day-to-day lives. He proved through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection that there is nothing impos-sible with Him.

Hor se Past ure MuralPost a big sheet of butcher paper at kids’ level. Pour paint in several “horsey” colors into pie tins with folded paper towels in the bottoms. Invite kids to draw features of a pasture (fences, stream, grass, trees, etc.), and then take turns to lay a hand on a paint pad, turn their hands up-side down and press onto paper to create “hand horses.” Kids add details with paint and markers to complete horses.

Imposs ible !Kids work in pairs. Give each pair a paper or plastic cup and a paper ball. First, pairs take turns to try to toss the paper ball over the shoulder into the cup set on the floor a few feet away. If this is impossible (which is quite likely!), then say, When something seems im-possible, it means we can’t do it alone. We need help! Invite pairs to help each other: One player tosses while the other holds the cup and moves it to try to catch the tossed ball. This was hard but not impossible. God says that with His help, nothing is impossible. In today’s story we’ll find out what seemed impossible that God wanted Moses to do!

Pon y Pups Cut cooked hot dogs into two sections at about one-third of the length; provide a shorter and a longer segment for each child. Child uses pretzel sticks and a short and a longer segment of hot dog, to construct a pony by using pretzel bits to add legs, neck, ears and a tail. Decorate the po-nies with ketchup and mustard before eating!

Lesson 3

Int roducti on I wonder what’s in our trunk today? Open trunk to remove printouts and paper plate Why do you think we have a sur-prised face? Remove Bible. Look! This is the book our story comes from—God’s Word, the Bible.

When are times you need help? Who helps you? Listen to find out why Moses wanted help! Show the face on the plate whenever you see the word, “Surprise!” Encourage children to also make a surprised face.

Tell th e Sto ryRemember how Moses grew up in Egypt? He lived like a prince! But one day, he saw a man hurting an Israelite slave. Moses killed the man—and then he was afraid and ran far, far away. He spent years in the desert and mountains. He was a shepherd, leading big flocks of sheep to food and water. It was hard, hot work. But Moses was glad to be far away from Egypt.

One day, Moses was leading the sheep, like he always did. Suddenly, he saw a fire. It was a bush that was on fire! (Show Lesson 3 Bible Story Art.) But the bush wasn’t burning up! Surprise! Moses got closer to see it.

Then a voice called, “Moses! Moses!” It was GOD’s voice!“Yes, Lord.” Moses answered. “Take off your shoes,” said God. “You are standing on holy

ground.” Surprise! Moses took off his shoes. “Moses,” God said, “I want you to lead My people away

from the mean King of Egypt. I want you to lead them to a new home.”

Surprise! Moses did NOT want to go back to Egypt! He said, “Wait . . . What if people don’t believe that You sent me?” God told Moses He would help Moses. He would make

SURE people believed Moses. He would give Moses power to do AMAZING things! Surprising things! Surprise!

First God told Moses to throw his walking stick on the ground. Moses did—and the stick turned into a SNAKE! Surprise! Then God told Moses to PICK UP the snake by the tail! Oh MY! But Moses did—and the snake turned back into his stick! Surprise! Then God told him to put his hand into his robe. Moses did. When he pulled it out, his hand had a horrible disease. Surprise! God told Moses put his hand back into his robe and pull it out again—and his hand was fine! Surprise! God showed Moses He would help him. But Moses was still worried.

Moses did NOT want to go back to Egypt. “Lord, please send someone else to do it!” he begged.

God got angry. He reminded Moses that He made Moses. He knew Moses! He would help Moses! He would be with him! Finally God said, “Your brother Aaron can speak well. I will tell you what to say, then you tell Aaron. He can speak to the people. Take your staff with you and I will help you do those amazing things!” Surprise!

God sent Aaron to meet Moses as he came down the mountain. Moses told Aaron everything God had said and the amazing ways God was going to help them. Moses and Aaron told all the Israelite leaders the things God had said and done. They told them how God had heard their prayers. They told them that God was going to get the Israelites out of Egypt! Surprise!

The leaders were so happy! They all bowed down and thanked God, worshiping Him for loving them!

God’s Wor d & MeWhen Moses thought this job was too hard, God showed him how He would help him. The Bible tells us, “God’s power gives us what we need.” God always wants to help us! Show “Ultimate Help” printout and read aloud. Jesus proved that He is stronger than anything, even dying. He will help us anytime we ask. Pray briefly, Dear Jesus, thank You for helping us and giving us what we need. We love You. In Your name, amen.

Lesson 3

Int roducti on What is something you’re supposed to do when you see a fire? (Call 911. Get an adult to help. Run away from the fire.) In today’s story, we’ll find out what Moses did when he saw a very unusual fire.

Tell th e Sto ryMoses had grown up as a member of Pharaoh’s household, adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter as a baby. He had lived like a prince, even though he knew he was the son of Israelite slaves. But now? Now he was herding sheep in the dry, rug-ged backcountry of Midian, far from Egypt.

Forty years before, he’d seen an Egyptian who was beat-ing an Israelite slave—and he’d taken justice into his own hands. He had killed the Egyptian and then had run so that he wouldn’t be put to death for the murder.

Can you imagine how different his life was now? Being a shepherd was probably rather boring compared to the excite-ment of palace life, but one day while Moses was taking care of sheep, there was suddenly PLENTY of excitement!

Read Exodus 3:2 to find out what was so exciting. Moses noticed that a bush was on fire, but the leaves did not turn

into ashes. The bush didn’t burn up! Strange! So Moses went closer to investigate. Then Moses heard a voice calling his name! It was GOD’s voice!

“Here I am,” Moses answered. God told Moses, “Take off your sandals. This is a holy

place.” Moses did that RIGHT away! Then God told Moses, “I AM the God of your forefathers.”

Moses hid his face, afraid to look up! God said, “I’ve seen how My people are suffering in Egypt. So I am going to res-cue them and take them a new home—a beautiful land!”

And guess who God had chosen to help? MOSES! God said, “I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people out of Egypt.”

“I can’t do that!” Moses said. “Why would anyone listen to me? Who would follow me?”

“I will be with you,” God said. But God’s help wasn’t a good enough reason for Moses. He did NOT want to do this! He asked God, “What if I go to the people and they don’t lis-ten? Who shall I say sent me?”

Find out how God answered Moses by reading Exodus 3:14-15. God told Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. That is My name. Tell them I AM has sent you! This is My name forever, for all generations! Go and assemble the leaders of Israel and tell them what I’ve told you.” And then, God told Moses EXACTLY what to say, so he wouldn’t have a hard time knowing what to tell them. God added, “The leaders of Israel will listen to you! Go with them to Pharaoh and ask to leave.”

But Moses still wasn’t sure. God’s help, God’s convincing of the leaders, God sending the leaders with Moses, it just didn’t seem to be enough!

Then God added, “I know that the King of Egypt won’t let you go when you ask. He will have to be convinced. And you can leave THAT to Me as well. I will prove to the Egyptians that I AM God. I will do amazing things. They’ll be con-vinced to let you go.”

God even told Moses that when the Israelites DID leave, God would make the Israelites RICH! He promised to make the Egyptians glad to give them their gold, clothing and silver!

Still, Moses was saying NO in every way he could! Moses asked, “What if no one believes me?” God replied, “What’s that in your hand?” Moses looked

at his walking stick. “Throw it on the ground,” God said. It turned into a SNAKE—and Moses RAN! God called him back and said, “Now pick it up by the tail.” Oh MY! Moses must have been afraid, but he obeyed—and when he did, the snake

Sto ry TrunkBefore class, print out Lesson 3 “Ultimate Help” Ultimate Point from Wrangler Roundup CD-ROM. Draw conversation balloons on ten sheets of paper. Place printout and prepared papers in a trunk with a Bible and several markers. Before you tell the story, divide group into two teams and open trunk as you speak. Distribute five sheets of paper and a marker to each team. What shapes are on the papers? (Conversation balloons.) In our story we’re going to hear a conversation between God and Moses. In the conversation balloons, Team One will write out what you hear Moses say. Team Two, write out what you hear God say!

became a staff again. Then God told Moses ANOTHER amaz-ing thing to show to His people. God told Moses to put his hand inside his cloak. When he pulled it out, it was white with disease! YUCK! But when Moses put his hand into the cloak again, as God said to do, his hand came out perfectly well and normal!

Finally the Lord gave Moses one last thing to do if the people still did not believe him: he could pour water from the Nile River on the ground and it would become blood. THREE amazing things, after all of the OTHER help!

But Moses was STILL worried. He said, “Lord, I’ve never been very good at speaking. I’ve always been slow and awk-ward when I try to speak.”

God said, “Look here. Who gave humans a mouth in the first place? I’ve told you. I will help you speak and I will tell you JUST what to say!”

Moses was STILL saying NO—he said, “Lord, please send someone ELSE to do this!”

By this time the Lord was angry! Moses just wouldn’t believe that His help was enough. But God didn’t give up on Moses. Read what God told Moses he would do to help him in Exodus 4:14-15. He said, “I am sending your brother Aaron to help you. I will be with you and teach both of you what to do and say.”

At last Moses was ready to do what God told him to do! He made the long trip back to Egypt, meeting his brother Aaron on the way. Together they went to the leaders of the Israelites and explained everything God had said, show-ing them the amazing miracles God had given Moses to do. Those miracles made all of the leaders believe what Moses had to say—just as God had said they would!

And when the Israelite leaders heard that God cared about them, that God had seen their misery and heard their prayers, they bowed down and worshiped Him.

God’s Wor d & MeGod showed Moses in many ways that He is big enough to help even the most impossible situation! Show “Ultimate Help” printout. And when Jesus came to Earth, lived and died and rose from the dead, He proved to everyone that nothing—not even death—is stronger than He is! Jesus made the way for us to be part of God’s family forever! If you haven’t joined God’s family, you can talk with me or another leader to find out more.

Let’s look at our conversation balloons. How many kinds of help did God offer to Moses? (Miracles Moses could do. God would tell him what to say. Israelite lead-ers would believe and help. God would convince the Egyptians to let them go. God would make sure the Israelites would leave Egypt with riches.)

Read 2 Peter 1:3 aloud from your Bible. This verse tells us that God has given the kids in His family every-thing they need for life and everything they need to know Him better! Show “Ultimate Help” printout. That’s Ultimate Help!

We talked about all the kinds of help God promised Moses. Which kind of help do you think would help you the most? Accept all answers.

What are some things kids your age might think are im-possible—too hard to fix? (School too hard. Bully too big. Parents don’t listen. Don’t know how to make friends.)

What are ways Jesus could help in these situations? (Send a tutor. Show ways to surprise the bully with kind-ness. Help you make friends.) What are things we can do to get Jesus’ help?

Invite kids to think about seemingly impossible situations in their lives and to pray silently. Close by praying aloud, ask-ing Jesus to help them in the situations they thought of and to help them remember He gives Ultimate Help to members of His family!

Coll ectBible, scissors, sheets of brown and yellow construction paper, glue, butcher paper, tape, small beanbags

Pre par eCut an equal number of large circles from the brown and yellow construction paper. Glue circles randomly onto butcher paper, allowing several inches between each circle. (Note: Prepare a butcher-paper sheet for each group of three or four children.)

Do1. Place prepared butcher paper on the floor or on a long

table and secure with tape. Children divide into groups of three or four and line up, standing a few feet away from the paper. Each child takes a turn tossing a beanbag onto the paper.

2. If the beanbag lands on a brown circle, everyone recites 2 Peter 1:3, “God’s power gives us what we need.”

3. If the beanbag lands on a yellow circle, child tells a way God helps him or her. Then everyone says, “Thank You, God!”

4. If the beanbag doesn’t land on a a circle (or even the butcher paper!), child retrieves beanbag and takes another turn.

Talk Abou t

Let’s name ways God helps us! God gives us (mommies). How does your mommy help you? (Makes my breakfast. Reads to me. Brings me to church.) God helps us by giv-ing us people to love us and take care of us. Repeat the process for other ways children name.

What are some other things you know about God? (God made the world. God can do anything. God loves us. God gives Ultimate Help.)

God’s Wor d“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our

knowledge of him.” 2 Peter 1:3

For Younger Children:“God’s power gives us what we need.”

(See 2 Peter 1:3.)

Jes us Con necti on God showed Moses that He has power

to do the impossible. Jesus can use His power to help me!

How can we know more about God? (Read the Bible. Come to church. Listen to parents. Watch videos about God. Sing songs about God.)

The Bible says, “God’s power gives us what we need.” Let’s thank God for the good things He helps us know about Him. Pray with children by having them echo each phrase, Thank You, God . . . that You can do anything! . . . Thank you for giving us Jesus . . . Thank You for loving us . . . and thank You for helping us. . . We love You! . . . In Jesus’ name, amen.

For Olde r Childre nCut 2-inch (5-cm) circles from brown and yellow construction paper and tape to a table. Assign a point value to each color. Divide group into teams of three or four. Children face away from the table and take turns to toss beanbag over the shoul-der, collecting points for each time beanbag lands on a circle. First team to collect 20 points chooses a volunteer who tells something that seems impossible but that God can do.

Do1. Select one child to stand in the center of the circle of

chairs and be the first “Cowboy.” The other children sit in the chairs, waiting for the “Cowboy” to give a direction.

2. If the “Cowboy” calls out, “Giddy up, everyone wearing red,” all children wearing red get up and try to sit in an-other empty chair before the child in the center can sit in it. The child who is left without a chair becomes the next “Cowboy.”

3. Make suggestions if the “Cowboy” needs ideas for a direc-tion to call out (everyone who has a dog, who likes to eat broccoli, who wears braces, etc.).

In the Bible story today, we heard how God helped Moses. What kinds of help did God give him? (Promise to be with Moses. Promise to tell him what to say. Other people. Amazing miracles.)

What kinds of help do kids today need?

The Bible says that God gives us Ultimate Help—everything we need! Lead children in reciting 2 Peter 1:3. Where can we get knowledge of God? (The Bible. Parents. Church. Teachers.)

What do you know about God? (God is everlasting. God can do anything. God can do impossible things.) God wants us to learn about Him. The better we know Him, the more we know that He can give us Ultimate Help in everything we do!

Pray briefly, Dear Jesus, thank You for helping us in everything we do. In your name, amen.

Pre par eOn the smooth side of the sandpaper, use pencil to trace around cookie cutters and cut out stars, making at least one star for each child. Unwrap the crayons.

Do1. Child places a sandpaper star under a sheet of construc-

tion paper. Child uses the side of an unwrapped crayon to rub over the construction paper so that the design of the star appears. (Optional: If children have difficulty holding shapes securely, tape the shape and/or paper to the table while child completes the rubbing.)

2. Child moves the paper so that the sandpaper star shape is in a different place and makes another rubbing.

Talk Abou t

Encourage children to rub their fingers over the sand-paper or lightly stroke the sandpaper over their cheek. What kind of paper is your shape made of? (Sandpaper.) What words describe this paper? (Rough, scratchy, sandy.)

What shape is this? (A star.) What important Western helper wears a star on his or her uniform? (A sheriff.) Being a sheriff is an important job.

In our Bible story today, we heard that God helped Moses do an important job. What job did God give to Moses? (Leading God’s people.)

Read 2 Peter 1:3 aloud. What does this verse tell us God gives us? What are some things that are included in the “everything” the verse talks about?

God gives members of His family Ultimate Help, too, just like He did Moses. God wants us to know Him better and grow in Him!

God sent Jesus to die on the cross and then come back to life. Jesus proved He is stronger than anything—even death! Let’s thank Him! Pray briefly, thanking Jesus for His Ultimate Help and asking Him to help kids remember they can pray to Him anytime.

Tea m GameStudents stand in a circle, holding hands. Show the hula hoop. We are going to pass this hula hoop all the way around the circle without ever dropping our hands. Sound impossible? Let’s try it! Break one pair of hands to place hula hoop over one player’s arm. Players move the hoop around the circle by stepping through and sliding the hula hoop along, never dropping hands. For a challenge, add another hoop or hoops. To make this move more quickly, play in groups of eight to ten players.

Bible Ver se GameRepeat 2 Peter 1:3 aloud with children. Then brainstorm and practice motions you or kids demonstrate. Add one or two motions at a time, repeating verse together with each added set of motions. Finally, say the entire verse once or twice doing all of the motions.

Son gYou, or another leader, lead children in singing “Stronger Than Anything,” adding motions and/or clapping if desired.

Prayer Today we talked about all of the help God offered to Moses—and ways Jesus can help us today! This side of the room, think of a situation. The other side of the room, think of a way Jesus could give Ultimate Help for that situation. Allow a few moments for children to respond. Then lead children in prayer, thanking Jesus for giving us all the help we need and asking Him to help us remember that He will give us Ultimate Help when we ask Him!

Son gYou, or another leader, lead children in singing “Psalm 56:3-4,” adding motions and/or clapping if desired. I am VERY glad that when things seem impossible, too hard or scary, I can look up to Jesus for Ultimate HELP!

Dear Miriam,

You won’t believe what happened to me! I’ve been

taking care of _______ in Midian. One day I came upon

this burning _______! But it was not burning up!

When I went over to look at it, _______ spoke to

me! He said that He was going to free the Israelite people

from their slavery. And God said that He wanted me to

______ to the Israelite elders and Pharaoh! I know how

powerful Pharaoh is! And I was worried that no one would

______ to me. Then God gave me some signs to perform to

show the people that I was really speaking for God.

But I told God that I was still nervous and afraid.

So God said ___________ could help out. You know how

good _______ is at talking! So now I know that

God will be with us.

Your tongue-tied brother,

Moses

P.S. Next time I want to depend on God
