Lesson 3:Lab Equipment and Lab Safety
Lab glassware includes containers and other materials that are made of glass (duh).
Glassware is often used because it is chemical resistant and can be
heated without melting.
There are severalcommonly-used types
of glassware:
BeakersBeakers are used to easily contain, pour,
and heat liquids. The marks on the side
of the beaker are called graduations.Beakers come in
many sizes.
Erlenmeyer Flasks
Erlenmeyer Flasks are used to mix and store
liquids.Rubber stoppers can
be used for storage and to prevent spills.
Boiling FlaskThe narrow mouth of a
boiling flask helps trap heat inside, while the
round shape allows water to boil during heating.
These flasks can have a round or a flat bottom.
Volumetric Flasks
Volumetric Flasks are used to measure and mix a precise amount
of liquid. Each size volumetric flask is used for one
specific measurement.
Graduated CylindersGraduated Cylinders are used
for very precise measurement of liquids.
The smaller the graduated cylinder, the more precise
the measurement.Use the smallest graduated
cylinder possible for the liquid you need to measure.
Ceramic LabwareCeramic labware is used for materials
at very high temperatures.
Lab Accessories
A variety of other accessories and equipment will be used during
lab activities.
Key QuestionsIn your science journal, write a paragraph
that answers the following questions:
1. What does lab safety mean to you?2. Why is it especially important to follow
all safety rules in science class?3. What are some important safety rules to
remember when doing science activities?
