The dawn of steam power was more than just a great step forward in technology: it had a huge and lasting effect on the culture of our nation too. Until the Victorian age, travel between Britain’s towns and cities was very hard. As the rail network grew, however, it became much easier and cheaper to move around the country. People from different regions began to mix more often, changing the way they viewed each other. Families could afford to go on holiday. It also meant that diets could be more healthy as fresh food could get to market before it went off.
