Introduction

Explain to your child that animals can be the same in some ways and different in other ways. Get two of your child's stuffed animals and ask him to explain how they are alike and different.

Activities

Activity 1: Living and Nonliving

Option 1

Explain that one thing all animals and plants have in common is that they are alive. All living things need food, water, and air. Things that are alive grow and change. On the sheet, "Living and Nonliving" (Option 1), your child should circle all the things that are living. Ask him to describe how he knows which objects are living. Remind him of the characteristics of living things.

Option 2

Using the pages, "Living and Nonliving" (Option 2), your child will circle all the things that are living on the first page. Then,

on the second page, he will write the names of the living objects in the first column and the nonliving objects in the second column. At the bottom of each list, he will write two additional names.

Note: The hermit crab is tricky because the crab is living, but the shell is nonliving.

Activity 2: Animal Parts

Explain to your child that we can also describe animals by their body parts. Explain that animals' body parts help them to move and do other actions that aid in their survival. If you have the book, Animal Habitats, by Judy Press (used in Concept 1), look at the pictures of many different animals and ask your child to identify the body parts he sees. Discuss how the animals use their different body parts. The animals with wings can fly; the ones with legs can walk/run; the ones with fins can swim. Give your child the sheet called "Animal Parts" (Option 1). Each animal on the sheet has a W, F, and L above it. Your child can circle the W if the animal has wings, the F if it has fins, and the L if it has legs.

On the bottom of the page, your child can draw the missing legs of each animal. Then, he cut out the animals and sort them into two groups — animals with two legs and animals with four legs.

Option 2 (Advanced)

Explain to your child that we can describe animals by their body parts. Give your child the sheet called "Animal Parts" (Option 2). Explain that animals' body parts help them move or are used in other actions to help the animal survive. For example, animals with wings are able to fly; the ones with legs can walk/run; the ones with fins or flippers can swim. On this page, he can write the name of the body part that helps the animal. Encourage him to look for body parts that are unique, not just the animals' legs.

Activity 3: Body Coverings

Explain to your child that we can also describe how animals are the same and different by looking at their body coverings.

Note: To extend this activity, your child can draw an additional animal that would fit in each group.

Option 1

On the sheet called "Body Coverings" (Option 1), your child can cut the animals out and sort them by body coverings (scales, feathers, and fur).

Option 2

This activity, "Body Coverings" (Option 2), provides a chart on Page 2 that has four sections labeled "Feathers", "Fins", "Fur", and "Other". Your child can look at each animal on Page 1 and write it in the correct category according to its body coverings.

After your child has sorted his animals, encourage him to add one additional example to each column.

Activity 4: Handwriting

Let your child write or copy a sentence about an animal's body covering.

A _______ has _________.

Wrapping Up

Review the idea that we can describe animals by looking at how they are similar and different. Ask your child to describe some ways that animals can be alike and some ways they can be different.
