Words to Know

Bugs! by Hal Gake

Build BackgroundRead the title to children, and have them identify the animal on the cover. Explain that a butterfl y is a kind of bug, or insect. Then ask: What is the butterfl y doing? Can you name some other bugs that fl y?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so that they can read the text successfully. Point out the sentence pattern repeated on each page: This bug can. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this book shows different bugs in action. On every page, children will fi nd out what a bug can do. Suggested language: Turn to page 2. This is the same bug as on the cover. What is it doing? The sentence reads: This bug can fl y. The word This begins with the letter T. Put your fi nger under the word This. Say the word.

Page 4: Look at this bug. This bug is eating a leaf. The sentence reads: This bug can find food. Say fi nd. What letter do you hear fi rst in fi nd? Look for the word fi nd on the page and point to it.

Page 5: Remind children that the information in the pictures will help them read. Turn to page 5. Look at this grasshopper. What can a bug like this do? Yes, this bug can hop.

Page 6: Turn to page 6. Do you know this bug? Look at the label in the photo. This bug has a stinger. What can this bug do?

Now turn back to the beginning and read about what different bugs can do.

Words to KnowHave children turn to the Words to Know at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read.

ReadNow have children read Bugs! softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: Which bugs in this book have you seen in real life?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Bugs fl y, swim, fi nd food, hop, and sting.

• Different bugs move in different ways.

• Bugs have different shapes.

• Bugs are in the air, on plants, and in the water. Bugs are everywhere.

• The writer wants to show how interesting bugs are.

• Each photo shows a bug close up so that we can see it in action.

• The writer uses many of the same words on each page.

Choices for SupportConcepts of PrintGive children practice differentiating features of a book by having them point out the following: a page number, a sentence, a label in a picture, a period, the fi rst word of a sentence, the last word of a sentence, the fi rst letter of a word.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Listening Game Say a pair of rhyming words. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Word pairs to use: bug/run; hop/hope; hop/pop; swim/sting; sting/thing; fl y/try; bug/rug.

• Blend Sounds Tell children that you will say a word very slowly, sound by sound. When they think they know what the word is, they should raise their hands. Then have the group say the word chorally. Words to use: /h/ /o/ /p/ (hop); /b/ /u/ /g/ (bug); /k/ /a/ /n/ (can).

• Matching Letters Materials: upper- and lowercase letter cards. Distribute the cards, and have children match uppercase and lowercase forms.

Writing About ReadingVocabulary PracticeRead the directions and have children complete the Vocabulary questions on BLM 17.1.

RespondingHave children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7.

Building VocabularyAction Words Build on the action words in Bugs! to talk about words that tell how people move. Suggested language: In this book, bugs get from place to place because they can swim, hop, and fl y. We can swim and hop. We can fl y, too, in a plane. What are some other ways we can move from place to place? Can we run? As children give suggestions, write their verbs on the board or chart paper. Begin the list with the words: We can.

(Possible suggestions: walk, skip, jump, march, skate, crawl, leap, ride, climb, drive, sail)

Read the completed list aloud with children, pointing to each word. Look at all the ways we can move!

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their responses, using the writing prompt on page 6.

Draw a picture to show one way a bug can move.

Write about the way the bug is moving.
