ESL/ELLThe letter l and the numeral 1 can be confusing as they look similar. Be sure to differentiate for students the difference between the two. When writing one or the other for students make it clear which one is being used.
Classroom activitiesMake it!
Use a variety of materials to create the numeral 1.
• Mold it out of playdough.
• Write it with paint, crayons or markers.
• Use glue and sand to make the number 1 on paper.
Collage
Provide students with a piece of paper that has a large numeral 1 in the middle.
• Trace over the numeral with pencils or crayons.
• Find pictures of single things to cut out of magazines and glue on.
• Gather natural materials such as twigs and leaves. Tape on one of each.
