the Fairfield offerthe Fairfield offerOur aim at Fairfield is to offer a broad and balanced education appropriate to the needs of

the children in our care. It combines traditional and family values within an enlightened and

ever-changing curriculum, taught in modern, up-to-date facilities. We strive for academic

excellence within the classroom, with individual care and focus, as well as offering a whole host

of activities outside the classroom, such as Sport and Music for which the school enjoys an

excellent reputation both locally and nationally. The School is non-denominational.

backgroundbackgroundFairfield House was built in 1823 and was lived in by the White family, hosiery manufacturers,

until 1893. It is the oldest part of the school and was first used by the Loughborough Endowed

Schools for the girls’ junior department in 1924. Today, it is part of a flourishing co-educational

day school for children from 4-11 years enjoying superb and outstanding facilities thanks to the

foresight and wisdom of previous Heads and the Governing Body.

The school enjoys a green and extensive campus just south of the A6 on the outskirts of the

University town of Loughborough. It is the Preparatory School to Loughborough Grammar

School for boys and Loughborough High School for girls. All three schools are autonomous, and

yet they share the same vision and educational ethos, supported by a very committed Board of

Governors. The catchment area for Fairfield is vast with children travelling from Leicester,

Nottingham and Derby, together with Loughborough and the surrounding villages.

foundation, developmentfoundation, developmentand growthand growthThe Pre-Prep Department is on the same site as the Preparatory School and, as a result, it

operates a similar day and has the benefit of being able to use many of the varied specialist

facilities.

You will find a warm, friendly and very caring environment in the classrooms; happiness and

success are the key to future learning within the school.

At 4+, in Reception, there is a three form entry and children are assessed in the January before

entry in the following September. These classrooms are bright, colourful and airy, highlighting the

many successes and achievements of the children. Everyone’s work is on display. The children

have their own class teacher who is supported by a full-time Nursery Nurse. Even children as

young as four years old use the Music School, the I.C.T. suite, Gymnasium and the Assembly Hall.

Throughout their learning, positive reinforcement takes place constantly in order to develop self-

confidence. Much of the learning takes place through extended play and the children have many

opportunities to be creative through Art and role play on a daily basis.

confidenceconfidenceIn years 1 and 2 children follow the National Curriculum in

preparation for Key Stage 1 tests which are taken at 7+. During

literacy and numeracy lessons, all children – irrespective of

ability – are withdrawn from the class in small groups to

receive support and individual attention.

Throughout the Pre-Prep Department, the interaction and care

between the staff and children are very noticeable. Even at

such an early age, all pupils in the Department enjoy the wider

curriculum and regularly attend trips and outings to local

places of interest.

Parents are invited to attend class assemblies once a week in

the Assembly Hall as well as other special occasions, such as

Harvest Festivals, Christmas Plays and Sports Days.

The Fairfield Pre-Prep provides the very best start for your

son’s and daughter’s education and they will be well on their

way to achieving their full potential before they move on to the

Preparatory School.

balanced educationbalanced educationThe Preparatory School day is very similar to that of the Pre-Prep with a morning assembly, four

periods before lunch, three periods in the afternoon and ‘home time’ at 3.40 p.m. Lunch is served

in the Dining Room on a rotational basis. Most of the children enjoy the extended curriculum,

taking part in the many lunch-time and after-school activities such as small Music Ensembles,

Dance, Drama, Science and Maths Club as well as various Sports Clubs, to name but a few.

traditional learningtraditional learningThe Prep School children benefit from excellent facilities and specialist teaching staff. All children

use the Library as well as being taught Science in the Laboratory, I.C.T. in the Computer Suite,

French in the Language Room, Drama in the Hall, P.E. and Games on site. Swimming takes

place at the Endowed Schools' swimming pool which is located at the Grammar School (just 5

minutes walk from Fairfield). Examinations in Mathematics, English and Science take place in

May every year with continual assessment throughout the year in all of the other academic

subjects. Homework is introduced from Year 3 onwards and details of this are recorded in

homework diaries which the children bring home on a daily basis. As a result, this forms an

important method of communication between parents and staff.

innovative technologyinnovative technologyThe excellent Information and Communication Technology facilities throughout the school are

linked to the Loughborough Endowed Schools' campus network. Although the importance of a

traditional education remains as strong as ever, I.C.T. enables a more flexible and individual

approach to learning. The use of laptops, data projectors with interactive whiteboards, digital

cameras and programmable toys make teaching very interactive.

This approach to individual learning enables us to cater for every child's academic needs so that

stimulating and yet realistic targets can be set, encouraging an appetite for learning and ensuring

the highest standards and levels of achievement. Fairfield is a forward thinking school, keen to

adopt new methods of teaching.

thinking andthinking andlearninglearning

The school has a long established, excellent

academic reputation. However, the wider curriculum

gives further opportunities for children to develop and

succeed. Awards, certificates and merits are

awarded to the children according to their level of

ability and they are presented in assemblies on a

weekly/termly basis.

Educational trips outside the classroom support the

learning that takes place inside the classroom. Many

of these visits have cross-curricular links, such as

trips to Warwick Castle, Merton park (York),

Stratford-upon-Avon and Sulgrave Manor.

valuesvaluesThe House System with four houses – Normans, Romans, Saxons and Vikings – provides an

opportunity for competition. ‘Effort’ and ‘excellence’ are rewarded with house points. Similarly,

there are high expectations for standards in dress, manners, courtesy, behaviour and punctuality

which are all important ‘life skills’ and help to provide the extensive ‘hidden curriculum’ at Fairfield.

Page 18: LES Fairfield Preparatory School Prospectus

teamworkteamworkNowhere at Fairfield are teamwork and excellence more apparent than in Music, Drama and

Sport. On a weekly basis, classes take part in form assemblies and many of these have a musical

content. In addition to the curriculum music that takes place, over two thirds of the children play

a musical instrument or are members of the Junior/Senior Choir, 1st/2nd Orchestra or take part in

one of the many ensembles that meet regularly at the school. On the first Friday of every month,

lunchtime concerts are held in the Recital Hall for parents, relations, staff and friends.

Small and whole school drama productions take place in the Assembly Hall which has a state-

of-the-art sound and lighting system. Parents are welcome to attend these productions.

leadership, challengeleadership, challenge and and opportunityopportunitySport plays a major part in life at Fairfield. During a varied and balanced Physical Education and

Games programme your son or daughter will be encouraged to support, encourage and work

with others, take part in teams and, above all, have fun.

Children play the following sports and can represent their house or school; football, hockey,

rugby, netball, cross-country, swimming, athletics, tennis, rounders and cricket. Many children go

on to play at representative level such as county or national standard.

In addition to the very broad curriculum, and lunch-time and after-school activities, many children

take the opportunity to enjoy regular visits abroad which are always well attended, such as the

annual school ski trip.

Parent Teachers’ Association -Parent Teachers’ Association -the Fairfield familythe Fairfield family

The Parent Teachers’ Association plays a crucial role in the life at Fairfield. Events are organised

throughout the year - including the ever popular Christmas Fayre - which bring the whole school

together as a community – pupils, staff, parents, friends…and it is always good to see so many

ex-Fairfield pupils returning to share with us their many varied and exciting experiences.

Also, the P.T.A. raises considerable funds which, in the past, have provided additional facilities

for the school; the Activity Room, extra I.C.T. equipment, new sound and lighting equipment in

the Assembly Hall and playground furniture and toys.

the next stagethe next stageIn the January of their final year at Fairfield (Year 6) children will sit the 11+ examinations. The

majority of children – usually over 95%– will progress to the Grammar and High schools. Others

will attend similar local schools. In Years 5 and 6, visits are arranged for Fairfield children to attend

the Grammar School and High School to ‘set the scene’ and to prepare them for this transition.

We want children to leave Fairfield happy, successful and fulfilled as well as confident and well

rounded so that they can face the many challenges of an ever-changing world. Fairfield is an

‘open door’ school and we would like you to enjoy the benefits of sending your son or daughter

here so that you can share with them in their learning experience.

Learning is fun @ Fairfield.
