urant la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, la Marquise de Pompadour fait

l’acquisition d’une manufacture de verres.

La Verrerie Royale de Sèvres naît quelques années plus tard sous de royaux

hospices : « donnée par le roi à la Madame de Pompadour » en 1750, elle

s’installe dans les terres de son château à Sèvres. En 1762, elle est considérée

comme l’une des trois meilleures verreries de France. Passionnée d’art, la

favorite de Louis XV est résolument décidée à habiller la table royale des plus

beaux verres, aussi parfaits que ceux que fabriquaient les vénitiens.

Son frère, Marquis de Marigny, introduit le cristal naissant dans cette production

et convertit l’Europe à la clarté inégalée d’un matériau qui devient désormais

incontournable sur toutes les grandes tables. En un siècle et demi, Cristal de

Sèvres conquiert tous les passionnés de l’art et de la table, particulièrement

intransigeants sur la qualité et l’esthétisme.

uring the first half of the 18th century, the Marquise de Pompadour acquired

a glassworks. The Verrerie Royale de Sèvres came into being a few years later,

under the royal patronage “granted by the King to Madame de Pompadour “

in 1750.

The Marquise de Pompadour had the glassworks moved to the grounds of her

chateau in Sèvres. By 1762, it was reputed to be one of the three best glassworks

in France. A passionate lover of art and favorite of Louis 15th, Madame de

Pompadour was resolutely determined to dress the royal table with the most

beautiful glasses, as beautiful as those made by the Venetians.

Her brother, the Marquis de Marigny, brought to the glassworks the recent

discovery of crystal and converted Europe to the unrivalled clarity of a material

that became an indispensable part of all top tables. Over the next one and a

half centuries, Cristal de Sèvres enamoured all passionate admirers of refined

tableware, in particular those that sought the highest standards of quality and

aestheticsm.

Each of the men that manufacture these ranges illustrate, at the end of their blowpipe, the timeless breath of an illustrious history.

uit et jour, les fours ronronnent. Ils attendent les verriers qui se mettent en place silencieusement pour les séances de

soufflage. Concentrés, ceux-ci savent précisément ce qu’ils ont à faire, mais une part d’inconnu reste présente. Pour « tirer

la jambe d’un verre », disent-ils, il faut avant tout la sentir.

Soudain, les hommes rencontrent la matière : le cristal en fusion, rougeoyant, imprévisible, croise les verriers jonglant

avec leurs cannes pour une chorégraphie réglée au millimètre. Chaque geste est la conséquence d’un autre. Les verriers ne

font plus qu’un et le cristal se coule dans leurs volontés.

Une course implacable contre le temps. Cueillie dans le four, la paraison de cristal refroidit au bout de la canne. Il faut

agir vite, sans hâte, avec des gestes souples et précis. La pièce prend forme à mesure que le rouge du cristal passe au jaune,

puis au transparent absolu.

Du temps, il en aura fallu, et il en faudra

encore : 24 heures pour que le cristal «

monte en fusion », puis plusieurs heures

de recuisson afin qu’il refroidisse sans

casse. Dans la chaleur et la pénombre

de l’arche, le cristal scintille et découvre

la lumière.

Dans un autre lieu consacré au travail à

froid, le minéral règne. Taille, polissage,

perçage, finitions : inlassablement, sous

un constant filet d’eau, les pièces sont

lentement choyées. Les coulées d’abrasif

ocre ou jaune sable cachent encore des

surfaces parfaitement lisses.

Loin du feu des fours, c’est là que

naissent les arêtes vives qui capturent

la lumière. Les hommes, le temps, le

feu, l’eau : une alchimie qui marque la

différence quand le cristal commence

une autre vie sur une table, un bureau,

quand il habite chez vous.

Fully concentrated on the task, they know what they have to do; yet, there remains an element of the unknown.

To “draw the stem of a glass” you must be able to feel it, they remark. Suddenly the men and material meet.

The unpredictable and glowing molten crystal moves among the glassmakers, who juggle it with their pontil rods and

blowpipes in a precision choreography.

Every movement is part of a sequence. The glassmakers move as one and the crystal bends to their will.

It is an uncompromising race against time. Picked from the furnace, the parison of crystal starts to cool on the end of

the blowpipe. One must act fast, without haste, with precise and flowing movements. The piece takes shape as the crystal

changes color from red to yellow, then

becomes absolutely transparent.

It will have taken a lot of time, and a

lot of more will be needed. 24 hours for

the crystal to melt, then several more

hours of refiring to allow the piece to

cool without breaking. In the heat and

darkness of the cooling arch the crystal

sparkles and discovers the light.

In another workshop devoted to

working crystal cold, the mineral

reigns. Cutting, polishing, piercing

and finishing: the pieces are slowly and

lovingly brought to completion under

a constant trickle of water. The flow

of ochre or sandy yellow abrasive still

hides the perfectly smooth surface. Far

from the furnaces, it is here that the

sharp facets that capture the light are

born.

Men, time, fire and water: an alchemy

that makes all the difference when

crystal begins a new life on a table or

desk, when it moves in to your home.

hommes à reproduire artificiellement le cristal de roche minéral.

Cette quête de la pureté glaciaire a engendré tout au long de l’histoire le même engouement que pour la porcelaine.

Quand Louis XV décide de créer les premières cristalleries à la fin du XVIIe siècle, le cristal est considéré comme un

matériau précieux. Lustres, bijoux, parures, importés de Bohème ou d’Angleterre, la concurrence est rude. Cristal de

Sèvres participe à cette épopée en dédiant le cristal à l’art de la table. Ainsi, les « verre à boire » autrefois négligés

deviennent de vrais chef-d’œuvre.

Aujourd’hui la « recette » du cristal a fait d’énormes progrès. Cette chimie du transparent est dosée dans des proportions

parfois infinitésimales, mais chacun

garde précieusement sa formule. La

perfection de la transparence est un

souci constant pour Cristal de Sèvres et

la « qualité matière », impitoyable, est le

premier stade d’une longue succession

de contrôles.

Les maîtres verriers n’hésitent pas à arrêter

une production qui ne conviendrait pas

à des critères très précis. La vue et le

toucher des maîtres verriers de Cristal

de Sèvres sont garants de cette qualité.

Clarté bien sûr, mais aussi rejet de

l’effet de « viscosité ». Inattendu, l’ouïe

est mise à contribution : la résonance

d’un cristal fait partie de sa qualité.

Un verre Cristal de Sèvres doit sonner

clair. Enfin, dernier, contrôle: le plus

intuitif. Même si elle répond à toutes

les exigences de mesure, une pièce doit

répondre à la « qualité harmonie »

décidée par les maîtres verriers. Ce n’est

plus l’œil qui décide mais l’âme.

rystal originated in Bohemia and in England in the 16th an 17th centuries and for many years struggled to find the

demanding path that men required of it, namely to artificially reproduce rock crystal. This quest for glacial purity

engendered the same passionate dedication as for porcelain. When Louis 15th decided to create the first crystal works in

the middle of the 18th century, crystal was considered a precious material. Chandeliers, jewellery, ornamentation were

among the crude imports from Bohemia and England. Cristal de Sèvres participated in this odyssey by dedicating crystal

to the art of tableware. Thus, once-neglected “drinking glasses” became true masterpieces.

Today the “recipe” for crystal has made enormous progress. This chemistry of transparency sometimes uses infinitesimally

small doses, but each manufacturer jealously guards his formula. The ultimate perfection of transparency is a driving

force at Cristal de Sèvres where rigorous inspection of “material quality” is the first of a long succession of checks. The

master glassmakers do not hesitate to stop any production that does not meet these exacting criteria. The eyesight and

sense of touch of the master glassmakers of Cristal Sèvres are the guarantee of this quality. Clarity, of course but also any

trace of the “viscosity” effect. Surprisingly the sense of hearing plays an important role: the resonance of a piece in crystal

is an integral part of quality. A glass must emit a clear note. Finally, a last intuitive check: even if it meet all criteria,

the piece must also pass the “harmony of quality” test, as determined by master glassmakers. It is no longer the eye that

decides, but the soul.

cristal à la maison ou au bureau. Vases, soliflores, objets du tabac, presse-papiers

mais également trophées et sculptures. La force discrète du cristal convient à tous

les intérieurs. Sa clarté, ses gammes de couleurs subtiles apportent une sensation

d’apaisement et de sérénité que chacun vit à sa manière.

La collection Cristal de Sèvres se reconnaît d’un coup d’oeil. Le jeu des arêtes

The first caters for all tables: dinner services, tasting glasses, carafes, decanters,

serving bowls and individual bowls. Cristal de Sèvres’ reputation in this domain

is internationally renowned. The second family of products invites crystal into

your home or office. Vases, bud vases, smokers’ accessories, paperweights but also

trophies, figurines and animal sculptures. The discrete strength of crystal finds

its place in all interiors. Its clarity and range of subtle colours brings a sense of
