GEWEX Aerosol Panel: A critical review of the efficacy of commonly used aerosol optical depth retrieval
Sundar Christopher, Richard Ferrare, Paul Ginoux, Stefan Kinne, Jeffrey Reid, Paul Stackhouse, Charles Ichoku; report in progress; presented by S. Kinne at GEWEX Data & Assessment Panel in 2013
constraining modeling: by temporal & spatial AOD patterns, AOD altitude (Calipso, IASI, MISR)contraining modeling by non-AOD info:
non-sphericicity (lidar, Calipso), fire radiative power (3.7um, MODIS),OMI/TOMS aerosol index, composition by spectral var. data (IASI)
important: retrieval documentation, L2->L3 strategy, error prognosisAERONET backbone source for verification
MAC: MPI-Aerosol–Climatology(Kinne et al. JAMES 2013) presented by S. Kinne at GEWEX Data & Assessment Panel
AeroCom: international initiative to improve aerosol representation in global modeling - with obs.12th workshop in 2013 (Hamburg)
GEWEX: The representation of aerosol properties may lead to diversity in current radiative flux products
One needs monthly maps of aerosol optical properties: aerosol optical depth at 550 nm (amount)single scattering albedo at 550 nm (absorption)asymmetry-factor at 550 nm (size)
… as function of wavelength, altitude, time (seasonal / inter-annual)
to address aerosol direct & indirect radiative effects
satellite passive remote sensing:only column AOD … and often too inaccurate
dependence on assumptions for aerosol absorption, background identificationsatellite active (lidar) remote sensing:
vertical resolved AOD (day + night) dust type ID by depolarization / limited surf. impact
AERONET (600 sites + maritime) :AOD at high accuracy from solar attenuationabsorption and size via sky-radiances data
MAC V1: combination of AERONET & modelling
MPI-Aerosol–Climatology (2)
- local sample statistics is artificially enlarged for better visibility- larger spheres reflect sites with better regional representivity
AERONET MACseasonal AOD at 550 nm
Quantification of Ice Nuclei concentrations requires:vertical distribution, size distribution, aerosol composition, hygroscopy …
V1 (1°x1°): implemented in ECHAM6, will be used in GEWEX integrated products
Planned Improvements (0.5°x0.5°) :more observational weight for vertical distrib.: CALIPSO (total & nonspherical extinction)better fine mode size (& scattering) properties: better prescriptions for fine re (via Ang)
fine mode size/AOD as function of 3D rel. humiditybetter coarse mode distribution / variability, better IN estimates
Développement de méthodes innovantes de télédétection d'aérosols sulfatés → WP3 de StratoClim
WP3: Satellites - Understand the global flux of sulphur into the stratosphere, Identify the main pathways, and understand the transformation into aerosols :
