Greeting Leopold

This will be my first President’s report for my Lion’s year. No sooner had I been

inducted into the 2018/2019 presidency than my wife and I flew off on a European holiday for seven and a half weeks. While we were away the Leopold Lions Club were not idle. Such is the strength of our Club that the great work continued

unabated.

It has always been a strong belief of mine that, if you want a good community, work for it!

This may be achieved in many ways. You can volunteer with the Churches, the Sporting Clubs, Scouts and Guides, the CFA or the SES, Neighbourhood Watch, Friends of the Rail Trail, the War Memorial, and of course your Lions Club. I know I have missed many other great groups and I apologise to them. Find an interest that you have and join a community group or just pick up some rubbish or as one person recently did, clean up some ugly graffiti. Every little bit will help your

community.

If anyone would like to investigate the Lions Club please contact one of our

members and we would be happy to welcome you to one of our meetings or

projects.

The Lions Club are now preparing for October when we will be hosting the Sydney Welsh Choir,

the Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir and the Coryule Chorus at Christian College,

Drysdale on the 13th of October.

We will be working hard at the Geelong Show as usual as well as running a BBQ for the Mane Event while also conducting our regular BBQs.

Tom Blair

President of the Lions Club of Leopold

LEOPOLD WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE Inc.

The Lone Pine

The Australian Troops landed at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. There was a ridge on which a solitary pine

tree stood. The trees in the area around had been felled by the Turkish troops to fortify their trenches in

advance of the attack, the trenches were also fortified by pine branches sourced from other locations.

On August 6th 1915 the battle of ‘Lone Pine’ began, after 4 days of fierce hand to hand fighting where

thousands of casualties were suffered on both sides the solitary ‘Lone Pine’ was destroyed by the heavy

shelling but the site remained known as ‘Lone Pine’. In the book ‘The Battle of Lone Pine’ it refers to ‘the

stump of the original Lone Pine’, this name was used by the Australians and stems from a popular song at

the time titled ‘The Trail of the Lonesome Pine’

On a mountain in Virginia stands a lonesome pine

Just below is the cabin home of a little girl of mine

Her name is June, and very, very soon, she’ll belong to me

For I know she is waiting there for me ’neath that lone pine tree

There are two main stories of seeds of the ‘Lone Pine’ being brought home to Australia, Lance Corporal

Benjamin Smith, 1583, of the 3rd Battalion whose brother was killed in the battle of ‘Lone Pine’, collected

some cones from the branches used to cover the Turkish trenches. He sent them home to his mother in

Inverell NSW. These were kept in a drawer for 13 years before being planted in 1928 and producing two

seedlings. One was planted at Inverell and the other was planted at the Australian War Memorial in

1934 by the Duke of Glouster, Prince Henry. These pines have been identified as Aleppo Pines which are

native to the Mediterranean Region.

Keith McDowell an Australian soldier of the 23rd Battalion brought home pine cones from the battle site,

it was claimed these cones were from the remains of the ‘Lone Pine’ itself, seeds were planted by his

wife’s aunt near Warrnambool, Victoria. Five seedlings emerged and 4 survived. They were planted at

Wattle Park, Shrine of Remembrance, Soldiers Memorial at Terang and at the Warrnambool Botanic

Gardens. These pines have been identified as a ‘Native Turkish Pine’, initially as a sub-species of the

‘Aleppo Pine’ but later as a distinct species.

‘Lone Pines’ have also been planted at various locations in New Zealand.

There are a number of ‘Lone Pines’ growing in the Geelong area, particularly at the Leopold Primary

School and the Leopold War Memorial.

The ‘Lone Pine’ trees grow proud and are a very special way to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of

the ANZACS.

We will remember them, Lest we forget.

Chairman, Leopold War Memorial Committee Inc.

THE OCTOBER GARDEN

It’s time for planting seeds or seedlings of vegies including pumpkin, zucchini, corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, climbing and bush beans, celery, beetroot, capsicum, chillies, lettuce, eggplant, radish, spinach and squash. Sow sunflowers and other flowers from seeds. Seeds that can be sown in garden beds where you intend to grow them are easy to do. Mix in some well-rotted compost prior to planting and rake it all over once finished so that you have a smooth surface. Sow the seeds as directed and cover them if specified. Water with a fine rose on your watering can and keep moist. Alyssum, nasturtiums, cosmos, marigolds, Californian poppies, nigella, everlasting daisies, gypsophila, cleomes and zinnias are all easy to grow. Borage is easily grown from seed and the vivid blue flowers help attract bees to the garden to pollinate vegie crops. Lilacs are in flower this month and are gorgeous in the garden. Their perfume is amazing so pick some flowers to bring inside and enjoy. Lilacs prefer a slightly alkaline (pH around 7.5) soil for best growth so grab a pH kit from a local nursery or hardware store and check your soil. Add lime or dolomite if necessary to correct the soil. Mulch over the warmer months to keep the roots cool and moist. Feed camellias and azaleas as they finish flowering and trim to shape if needed. Prune blossom trees that have finished flowering; you can cut them back hard to keep them really compact. Enjoy new growth on Japanese maples as they come out and if in pots move to where they are protected from hot sun and strong winds. Admire flowering crabapples and late flowering ornamental cherries out in bloom this month and see if you can find room to pop one in the garden. Prune winter and early spring flowering shrubs that are finished flowering such as echiums and flowering quince. Give them a feed at the same time. Plant perennials such as penstemons, salvias, statice, silene, lamb’s ears, ajuga, bergenia, thrift (Armeria), campanulas, dianthus and carnations, phlox, nemesia, lavender, heucheras for their colorful foliage, plus lots more that can go in small pockets and around other plants to add permanent color and texture. Mulching is critical as the weather warms up but first try to ensure you have added plenty of compost to enrich the soil and hold moisture in. You can also add a wetting agent to ensure the water soaks down well into the soil. Try to water thoroughly a couple of times so that the moisture is well down the soil profile prior to putting mulch on. Feed citrus and evergreen fruiting plants again later this month. Enjoy roses in flower and feed again if it is more than two months since you last fed them – Sudden Impact for roses is a good fertilizer to promote healthy growth and flowering. Keep blueberries, vines and fruit trees moist and well fed as they develop fruit for summer. Inconsistent watering can lead to dry fruit so keep them evenly moist and mulched.

“When gardeners garden, it is not only plants that grow, but the gardeners themselves.” (Ken Druse)

BELLARINE CAMERA CLUB The first meeting of the month was a club evening where our upcoming October photographic exhibition was discussed, with preparations well on the way for 13th and 14th October. We also saw the very interesting documentary “Salt” – photographer Murray Fredericks’ very lonely journey on

Lake Eyre, his photographs being of the expansive space rather than Lake Eyre being the subject. Our monthly competition was Street Photography, judged by local artist Dr Gillian Turner, a very knowledgeable and experienced judge. It is always a pleasure to have Gillian judge one of our competitions, and members always appreciate what she has to say about their images. Our photographic outing this month was to Anglesea bushland to photograph the very tiny wildflowers. UNITED CHURCH

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present Seven Wonders of the World. Though there were some disagreements, this list received the most votes: Egypt’s Great Pyramids, Taj Mahal, The Grand Canyon, Panama Canal, Empire State Building, St Peter’s Basilica and China’s Great Wall.

While gathering the votes, the teacher noticed one student had not yet finished her paper. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there are so many.”

The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have and maybe we can help.”

The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the seven wonders of the world are to see, to hear, to touch, to taste, to feel, to laugh and to love.”

The room fell silent.

The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and take for granted are truly wonderous.

The most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or purchased with money.

True stories are often stranger than fiction: The recently installed security cameras at the church “captured” a person unloading a lot of “stuff” in the car park late at night - donations that the OpShop would not be able to handle. While arrangements were being made to have these items taken to the tip, the same security cameras captured various other visitors taking all the “donations.” It all could make an interesting YouTube video!

Church Services are at 10:00 o’clock on Sundays with Rev Bob Thomas leading worship. If you like Hymn Singing, come at 9:45 a.m. We have a regular session every Sunday before church just for enjoy-ment where people can sing along or just listen.

We hope to see you on Friday 2nd November when there will be another Plant & Garden Sale. Plants and garden materials will be on sale from 9:30 a.m. till around 6:00 p.m.

Morning and afternoon Devonshire Teas will be available and a Sausage Sizzle around lunch time. It will be a great day.

You are invited to take a visit our Web Site http://leopold.unitingchurch.org.au/

You can't always plan to be in company when you're out in public but you can take steps to prepare for situations when you

find yourself alone. When you're out and about,

Avoid walking in dark isolated places

Don't go under the radar

Before you set out, try to let people know where you are going.

A short text could be all it takes to keep you safe.

Where possible, try to walk in groups

Trust your instincts

Whatever it will take to improve your safety and make you feel more comfortable, do it.

LEOPOLD RED CROSS

DROUGHT APPEAL

The RC appeal for drought aid has reached $10.5 million and rising. This money is being used to

supply personal care packages and food boxes directly to the affected farmer, via their local CWA

ladies. These ladies are Johnnies-on-the-spot, and know their local families well, unlike the Govt.

office people who send out screeds of drought assistance forms that need an accountant to un-

ravel.

20 YEARER

At our September meeting, Margaret Palmer was presented with her 20 year Long Service

Award. Unfortunately for Marg her volunteer wages have not risen from her 10 year award—still

zilch. Well done Marg.

FILM NIGHT

Our last film night for the year will be on 28 / 11, 7pm for 7.30pm start, at St Mary’s theatrette.

Tickets are $12.50, and are available from Maureen on 550 1228. The film will be ’Finding your

Feet’, starring Joanna Lumley, and is reviewed as a ’feel good’ movie. There’ll also be the usual

multi-prized raffle and mini stall. With free supper, free parking, what more could you want?

WORDS OF WISDOM

Two quotes from a recent zone meeting -’ The world is getting better and better, worse and

worse, and faster and faster’, and ‘Studies show volunteering is the second greatest source of

joy after dancing’.

RUOK

Tony McManus was one of the speakers at that meeting and spoke about depression and the

ways we can help. If you feel someone is struggling ask them RUOK, then follow up with an RAK

(random act of kindness). Visit the website to find out how to help, and keep in contact. Tony’s

quote to add to the other 2 was ‘The best exercise you can do is to help someone who is down,

to get up again’.

Thanks for the wool, magazines, Digests, Geographics, stamps glasses and corks that keep arriv-

ing. They are muchly appreciated at their destinations.
