Leopard Class Week 1 20.4.20
Weekly English ideas
English- Week 1 – 20/4/20 Good morning The English focus for this week, is reading and exploring a range of different fairy tale stories. The idea is that the children get to share and read a variety of different stories and have discussions about these stories. It maybe nice to discuss how stories have changed from generation to generation. This could happen through reading any fairy tale story books you already have or use online story telling, or watch videos of the book being read. The aim this week is to get the children talking and enjoying fairy tales. Reviewing and thinking about their likes and dislikes of the different stories and characters thoughts and feelings. Enjoy sharing and talking about stories. Any problems please do email me. Have fun. Mrs Sealy [email protected]
English Lesson 1- To become familiar with a variety of fairy tales and traditional tales
Lesson 1- I would like the children to read and share a variety of fairy/traditional tales and discuss these in detail. This could be either by using any story books that you may have at home or watch video's or films retelling a fairy/traditional tale. Things to discuss: Who were the main characters? Which was your favourite character and why? Why do you think the character behaved in this way? Did you enjoy the story, if so why or why not? What do you think might happen next? If there was another story what would happen? Would you recommend this book and why? Why do you think the author wrote this book? What would you change about the story?

English- Activities Now that you have shared and read a variety of fairy/traditional tales together. Can you discuss which was your favourite one and why. Then draw a picture and write a paragraph about your favourite one and why. Some sentences starters to help you begin: • My favourite fairy/traditional tale story was…… because….. • I really enjoyed reading…… because…. • I enjoyed reading …….. because….. • I enjoyed reading the part….. • The characters in the story were…. I particularly liked …..
because he/she was • The best bit of the story was…. • I think they could have improved the part…..
English- Example of a piece of writing
My favourite fairy tale is Goldilocks and the three bears. The reason I enjoy reading this fairy tale is because I really like the character Goldilocks. I think she is a funny, cheeky and a strong character who does a lot of naughty things. My favourite part of the story is when Goldilocks eats all of the bears porridge and then falls asleep in baby bears bed. If I was the author I would change the ending and rather than Goldilocks running back home I would let Goldilocks stay with the bears and make her make some new porridge and fix the broken chairs and beds.
English- Lesson 2-write a character description of your favourite character
Lesson 2- I would like the children to write a character description of their favourite fairy tale character- from a fairy tale of their choice. For example: this could be one of the three pigs, Jack, the giant, the wolf, the ginger bread man, goldilocks or sleeping beauty. Really try to use your ideas and imagination and how you see that character.
Things to discuss before writing: - What does your character look like? Can you describe their clothes, hair, eye colour, size. - How does your character behave- are they cheeky, naughty, nice, mischievous. - Why do you think that they behave in that way? What makes them naughty? Nice? Kind?
Activity- draw a picture of your favourite character and then write a paragraph describing the character. Things to think about: • Try and start sentences in different ways- vary how you start a sentence- don’t
always use the name of the character. Try he/she, when, I think • Don’t forget to use full stops, capital letters and exclamation marks to add
interest for the reader • Use a variety of exciting and interesting adjectives – not just words like big,
small, nice, red, blue- how about- enormous, tiny, wonderful, ruby red, navy to give the reader a real picture in their heads.
• Write in complete sentences and try using connectives to extend your sentences- e.g. because, when, so, also, as well as..
• Have fun- see an example on the next page
Little Red Riding Hood is a young and energetic girl. She has long golden hair, which is tied back in two pig tails. Little Red Riding Hood always wears a long ruby cloak with a hood. She has bright blue eyes, with long beautiful eye lashes and a tiny nose. Often she carries a wicker basket to collect things when she is out walking and her favourite thing is picking attractive flowers. I think she is a kind and caring young girl because she is always trying to help others and bakes biscuits and treats for her Grandma. She is very trusting of strangers, which is why she was a little bit naughty and spoke to the wolf.

English Lesson 3- To write thought bubbles /speech bubbles between two characters
Lesson 3- I would like the children to write thought bubbles or speech bubbles between any two characters from a fairy tale. Activity ideas: -Draw two characters from a fairy tale story then spend some time thinking about what they maybe saying to each other or what they might be thinking about. Next draw two speech or thought bubbles above the characters head and write down the ideas discussed.
Example of characters thought/speech bubbles
If this rotten wolf thinks he can blow down my house, he is wrongly mistaken. I have a cunning plan.
Yummy, I smell tasty pig. It must be lunchtime. I shall use all of my huff and puff to blow his house down and eat him!
“Excuse me Mr Wolf, Can I ask what you are doing at my house?”
“Well I have come to find my yummy dinner! It looks like I have found what I am looking for.”
English- Lesson 4- To write a book review of your favourite fairy tale
Lesson 4- Now that the children have read a variety of fairy tale stories. I would like them to write a book review on one of the stories. Things to think about: - What is the title of the story? - Who is the author and illustrator? - Is it non-fiction or fiction? - What was the book about- could you write a brief blurb? - Who would this book be suitable for? What age? - Would you read this book again? If so why? - Would you recommend this book? - Can you draw a picture of your favourite part? - How many stars would you give it?
Example of a book review (you could print out this slide as use it as a template)
English- Lesson 5- Hot seat activity Lesson 5- I would like the children to think of and write down a list of questions that they would ask one of the fairy tale characters if they could meet them. Then have a go at hot seating the characters. (Hot seating- is where one person sits down and pretends to be a character from a book whilst another person is interviewing that character. The person in the hot seat is answering the questions as if they were the character.)
Which character will you be? What will you ask the character? See an example on next slide.
Hot seating question examples for Little Red Riding Hood Enjoy and have fun! Please do let me know how the learning has gone this week. I look forward to hearing all about your exciting learning. Mrs Sealy
