Leone  Buyse  flute     Ann  Hobson  Pilot  harp  ANN   HOBSON   PILOT,   the   legendary   former   Principal   Harpist   of   the   Boston   Symphony  Orchestra  (BSO),    retired    in  2009  after  40  years.      Ms.  Pilot  has  had  an  extensive  solo  career  performing  as  soloist  with  orchestras  in  the  US  as  well  as  Europe,  Haiti,  New  Zealand,  and  South   Africa,   where   she   traveled   in   1997   to   record   a   video   documentary,   “Ann   Hobson  Pilot,  A  Musical  Journey”  which  aired  nationwide  on  PBS  for  three  years.        

After  the  2009  Tanglewood  concerts  and  her  official  retirement,  Pilot  returned  to  the  stage  as  soloist  with  the  BSO  opening  the  Boston  Symphony  season  and  the  Carnegie  Hall  season  with   the  world  premiere  of  a  concerto  written   for  her  by   John  Williams,   “On  Willows  and  Birches”.  

The  recipient  of  an  honorary  Doctor  of  Music  degree  from  Tufts  University  in  2010,  she  has  received  numerous  awards  including  the  Distinguished  Alumni  Awards  from  the  Cleveland  Institute   of   Music   and   a   Lifetime   Achievement   Award   from   the   Boston   Musicians  Association  and  from  the  Talent  Development  League  of  the  Atlanta  Symphony.  

Her   new   video   documentary—“A   Harpist’s   Legacy   -­‐  Ann   Hobson   Pilot   and   the   Sound   of  Change  “   -­‐   profiles   the   inspirational   life   and   musical   career   of   a   gifted   African   American  woman’s  triumph  over  barriers  of  race  and  gender  to  become  an  artist  and  teacher  whom  many,   including   John  Williams,   Yo-­‐Yo  Ma  and   James  Levine,   revere   as   one  of   the  world’s  great  harpists.    The  documentary  will  air  on  PBS  stations  nationwide  through  2017.  

Ms.   Pilot   has   recorded   on   the    Boston   Records   label   as   well   as   for   Koch   International,  Deutsche  Grammophon,    New  World  Records  and  Denouement  Records.      Her  recording  of  “On  Willows  and  Birches”  with  the  Boston  Symphony    was  recently  released  for  download  on   the   BSO   website.   Her   new   recording   of   music   by   the   Argentinian   composer,    Astor  Piazzolla   for   harp,   violin   and   bandoneon   will   be   released   in   January   of   2015   on   the  Harmonia   Mundi   label.    The   violinist   is   Lucia   Lin   of   the   Boston   Symphony   and   the   Muir  string  quartet  and  J  P  Jofre,  world  famous  Argentinean  bandoneon  player.    

 

LEONE   BUYSE   is   the   Mullen   Professor   of   Flute   at   Rice   University's   Shepherd   School   of  Music  in  Houston.    Previously  a  principal  flutist  of  the  Boston  Symphony  and  Boston  Pops  and   member   of   the   San   Francisco   Symphony   and   the   Rochester   Philharmonic,   she   has  appeared   as   soloist  with   those   orchestras   and   also  with   the   Utah   Symphony,   the   Xalapa  Symphony,   the   Orquesta   Sinfonica   Nacional   of   Mexico   City   and   l'Orchestre   de   la   Suisse  Romande.     She   has   performed   with   the   Boston   Symphony   Chamber   Players   throughout  Europe   and   Japan,   with   the   Tokyo,   Juilliard,   Brentano,   and   Muir   String   Quartets,   and   in  recital  with  Jessye  Norman  and  Yo-­‐Yo  Ma.    A  renowned  educator,  she  has  taught  at  the  New  England   Conservatory,   Boston   University,   the   University   of   Michigan,   and   the   Aspen,  Sarasota,  and  Norfolk  music  festivals,  and  has  presented  recitals  and  master  classes  across  the  United  States  and   in  Canada,  Mexico,  Panama,  Portugal,  Brazil,  Chile,  France,  Italy,   the  Netherlands,   Japan,  Australia,  and  New  Zealand.    Her  solo  recordings  are  available  on   the  Crystal,  Boston  Records,  and  Albany  labels.      

In  2010  Ms.  Buyse  received  the  National  Flute  Association’s  Lifetime  Achievement  Award  in  recognition   of   outstanding   contributions   to   the   flute   community   worldwide.   Her   former  students  hold  positions  at  major  universities  and   in  many  major  orchestras,  including   the  symphony   orchestras   of   Boston,   Cleveland,   San   Francisco,   St.   Louis,   Kansas   City,   and  Charlotte,   the  Minnesota  Orchestra,   the  Rochester  Philharmonic,   the  Colorado  Symphony,  the   Louisiana   Philharmonic,   the   Florida   Orchestra,   the   New   Zealand   Symphony,   the  Adelaide   Symphony,   and   the   Singapore   Symphony.   She   maintains   a   web   presence   at  www.leonebuyse.com.
