Some classroom buildings have undergone and are currently undergoing improvements and the Auditorium has been significantly upgraded. Most of the classrooms however, need significant modernization to be brought up to current standards. There are ample outdoor gathering areas between classroom wings, but there is no central core area or quad. All areas are served with covered walkways with only minor path of travel issues. The play fields are also are also small and in fair condition although in a depressed area with drainage problems. The play fields are available for joint use with the City. The size, design and construction along with significant community and parent support makes this school an excellent candidate for modernization. Narrative Summary The site is approximately 11.3 acres in an area of fully developed suburban neighborhoods and is small for a K8 school currently serving 666 students. Built in 1950, the school was originally designed as a middle school and is in generally good condition and well maintained. There is ample parking for staff and visitors with good access in and out. The approach to the site however, is complicated by streets around an island of 4 to 5 homes. Both bus and parent drop off is in the main parking lot with circulation through the lot. The main parking lot was recently upgraded to provide the combined bus and parent loading and unloading areas. While there was some effort to identify and provide controlled drop off areas, the adjacent lanes have no barriers and create hazardous conditions for the students. There are barrier free upgrades still needed at some path of travel locations. For the past 22 years Leonardo da Vinci has been operated as a K8 arts and sciences magnet school.
