Science/EngineeringLeonardo was ahead of his time, conceiving many complex designs and prototypes for all sorts of machines. He endeavored to improve the quality of life and the world in general through his concepts. During his life, he designed “military fortifications” and weapons, architectural renderings for buildings, and numerous machines and instruments. Many of these were recorded in great detail in composition books, using an alternate form of writing called “mirror writing.” Leonardo made great advancements in a large number of fields, including mathematics. He tested “the strength of materials” and is known for his drawings of “flying machines.” His breakthroughs helped to form the foundation for many later advancements and innovations.

ArtLeonardo da Vinci is most well known for his meticulous paintings, drawings, and sketches. These include The Last Supper, the Mona Lisa, and the Vitruvian Man, as well as many notebooks packed full with designs. Besides these works, he also took pleasure in drawing ideas for inventions, observations, and anything else that piqued his interest, especially nature and anatomy. He was apprenticed as a young boy “to the fabled workshop of Verrocchio,” a famous artist. A quick learner, he eventually revolutionized painting by using exciting new methods. Past painting techniques from the Middle Ages were dark and usually religious. Leonardo’s artwork was refreshingly realistic and unbiased. He also incorporated many of his new discoveries into his work, such as chiaroscuro, or “an effect of contrasted light and shadow.” He used science to make his renderings as realistic as possible, studying “nature, anatomy, and physical proportions.

“Leonardo believed that the artist must know not just the rules of perspective, but all the laws of nature.”

Why was he so important?Leonardo Da Vinci was ahead of his time. Many of his inventions were centuries ahead of his time. His views on the world changed the way we think and affected our lives in the process. He pioneered every aspect of human life as we know it creating the world we know today.

“For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return”
