For the 40th anniversary of the Leonard H. Axe Library, President Axe
is honored on the cover of the 2019 bibliography.
Dr. Leonard Henry Axe was president of the Kansas State Teachers
College from 1957 to 1965. He initiated a number of projects and
important changes at the college during his tenure as president
including succeeding in getting the name changed to Kansas State
College of Pittsburg, acknowledging the institution’s expansion and
diversification of degree programs. He helped initiate several new
buildings on campus that included the Weede, Hughes and Yates
Halls, and an addition to the Overman Student Center.
Dr. Axe was born October 9, 1900 in Council Grove, Kansas. He
received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baker University in 1923, an
LL.B. degree from the University of Kansas in 1929, and his Doctor
of Science of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan in 1942.
He practiced law for a number of years prior to joining the faculty and
administration at KU.
During WWII, he was the director of the Navy V-12 program at KU,
and organized and directed the veteran’s training program.
He wrote books on aviation insurance and business law, and published
articles in various law review journals.
Following his retirement from KSCP (now Pittsburg State
University), he became dean of Cottey College, Nevada, Missouri
until 1968. Dr. Leonard H. Axe died in December 1975.
In October 1979, the newly built and unnamed library was dedicated,
replacing Porter Library. The library was later rededicated in April
1981 and named the Leonard H. Axe Library in honor of his many
contributions to the university.
