Lent: A Season of Giving
Prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Why do we do it? Lent is about looking at theCross, at Christ’s gift of himself, and modeling that love in our own lives. It is about
looking at our lives, realizing how small we are, acknowledging our failures andseeking the Lord’s help to grow — all so that we can give ourselves more fully to
him and his Church. Make a gift of yourself this Lenten season.

Fasting and Abstinence during Lent: What does it mean tofast or abstain?
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinencefor Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence
(abstaining from eating meat).
For members of the Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as
two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of theCatholic Church from age 14 onwards. Those who are sick, pregnant or nursing,or whose health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence, should not
consider themselves bound by these norms.
