When you can’t get close to the animal

1

Go with a long Focal Length:

If you have an APS-C Sensor DSLR - 70-300mm, 80-400mm, 100-400mm, 120-400mm, 150-500mm, 200-500mm

If you have a Full-Frame Sensor DSLR- 80-400mm, 100-400mm, 120-400mm, 150-500mm, 200-500mm

The lower-priced Zoom lenses don’t have the AF performance necessary for wildlife action. But they do work well with nonmoving subjects.

Go with a large Aperture (low f-stop #) The fastest possible shutter speed (lowest f-stop #) allows you to stop action and to throw the background completely out of focus to place emphasis on the subject. For example: 300mm ƒ/2.8, 400mm ƒ/2.8, 500mm ƒ/4, 600mm ƒ/4 and 800mm ƒ/5.6.
