MihimihiMihimihi examines the ideas of journey and arrival, of coming together, and of sharing in and contributing to building a rich and divergent collective identity. Mihimihi begins with the announcing of oneself. How do you announce yourself? Who are you; who are your people; where do you come from; what are your stories; what do you bring to this place and the people around you?

The Detroit River at General MacArthur Bridge, Detroit, Michigan January 1996On August 19th 1995 Deletha Word and Martell Welch had a minor traffic accident. Welch chased
Word, pulled her from her car and beat her for nearly half and hour. More than forty people, some of whom had cellular phones, watched as Welch struck her repeatedly with a tire iron, but no one called
the police. Word leapt from this bridge to escape her attacker. Two men jumped in the river to save her, but Word feared they would harm her as well and kept swimming; she eventually drowned.
Martell Welch has been charged with murder.
